I have not been on here for a couple of months or so. I decided to put SH5 on the shelf for a while to see if the situation got any better in respect of improving the playability). Booted it up today and saw that it has been patched, and I was able to get up the ladder in one go when I tried - but other than that the negative comments I have seen suggest nothing of any great worth has changed...

Actually, a lot of advancements been made, especially in the past month or so. Quite a few threads have been made lately about mod lists that people are using, they may be a good place to start. With the right mod soup, I really enjoy SH5, and more improvements are being made every day. The cynics will still try to taint your view of the situation, but much of what they have to say about SH5 has already been fixed, or at least improved upon. Good luck.:salute:

Hear! Hear! :yeah:
SH5 is eminently playable with the latest patch and a nice, long list of great mods. I'm having a great time and not missing SH3+GWX at all.
Good hunting!

Agreed. There is fun to be had with this game if you want to. It may not be to some folks' tastes, but give it a try with some of the great mods and an open mind.
I still love looking over the navigator's shoulder at the nav map, then climbing the ladders to the bridge to see what's going on topside. Never gets old.

i think the destinction to be made is that we have much of the main complaints fixed by "modders" NOT the patch
the patch fixed a few minor issues and thats about all, but the biggest improvement to the game is the mods that are available now have GREATLY improved the game and you should find it to be a much different game then when you shelved it.

Yes, that is what I meant, I should have been more specific.

Have to agree with you about that. The boat is alive and no more teleporting if you don't want. Still enjoy climbing the ladder myself.

Then you must not like playing in a Type II. Or playing in 1944.
I'm not saying SH5 doesn't have a lot to offer, I'm just directly addressing your attempt to turn this into yet another spitting contest.

Did I miss something?
I don't read a 'spitting contest' from said post.
Did Poster start something in some other post I missed?
:hmmm:
Or did you post a pre-emptive post in an attempt to
prevent a post that prefers a 'spitting contest' type post?
:har:

Now then boys, no squabbling allowed in my thread.
You all sound quite positive, so I am encouraged - but I think I will start from scratch. I have been happily playing SH3, and occasionally SH4, just because I like the way the sea behaves in that game - makes me really feel I am moving through deep ocean swells, however, SH3 is the only game I seem to manage to engage in - my seas were awful empty when I first tried SH5. Right, I shall have another go then - after installing a few choice mods. That will be my next task.
Thank you all for your help :)
ps, thank you for the welcome back Sailor Steve :)

She-Wolf asked what's new with the game. I may be wrong, but why bring SH3 into it at all? She didn't ask how they compared. What if I had replied "Nothing is new, some patches and some mods, but it still lacks anything besides graphics, and SH3 is still much better"? To my mind that's exactly what 'The Other Guy' did.

while true, i didnt see it to be a shot that needed to be responded to but then i dont know if he had some kind of a history or not when it comes to discussing sh3+GWX.
my first thought about it as well was you may have been a little quick to see a slight that may very well not have been intended there.

Well, you could be right, and if so I apologize. It wouldn't be the first time I was so far off base I was tagged out by the center fielder.

Sorry to have kept away so long Firewall. We built a more powerful machine earlier this year, from bits we had bought one-at-a-time the previous year, so it is not cutting edge, but being a x64 processor, I am able to exceed the memory limits of 32bit, so have spent much of the time trying out many of my old ( and rather unused) games on Windows Seven x64, to see if they will play on there - and you know how it is ( I hope), you come across an old favourite and want to play it all over again. It will probably completely ruin my image of a hard-bitten female kaleun (HA!) to confess that I have been spending large amounts of my time playing.... Settlers 2:oops:. There I have said it. Street cred blown....

Hi She-Wolf-
I'm not much of a poster but I have to add my two bits.
Shame on UBI to have left the SH5 ship dead in the water, but the mods have done an exceptional job with SH5 bringing her up to steam. there are still issues, but everyday miracles are performed on this once-dead hulk...much like transplant surgery!
Go to the Mods section and glean information about which mods to chose and how to install them in what order.
I was a disbeleiver for a loooong time.
One day, there will be a supermod....

thank you OldFrenchy, your faith in the game's continuing improvement thanks to the modders is a boost.
Started a new career today and did the tutorial run to Kiel. Got on much better this time than when the game first came out. I am still finding my way around of course, but am going to have another play, and then decide what mods to look for. Still feel more like an observer than the captain, and little things ( like knowing what the time is) would be pleasing to have - and maybe are already there somewhere. Also I kept making the mistake of using the directional keys to move me around, which moved the sub's orientation instead. Grr.
I would prefer more keyboard than mouse, but again, I probably need to read the manual afresh and remind myself what does what.
All in all it was a bit of fun today, but not 'immersion', so I have a way to go, but am encouraged.Oh, and I seem to be able to shin up the ladder more easily now - is that me getting better or a fix I wonder?

yep, its like your mother-in-law came in and rearranged all your bins while you were out so its all still there somewhere but to find it is like a puzzle :06:
sadly they designed sh5 to remove some of the immersion to appeal to casual gamers so i doubt it will ever have the same immersion feeling as sh3 but with time, maybe close to it

Gosh Webster, wot a lotta mods you have there. Do you have one to make the water nearer blue than the current black it is now - or is that down to my graphics card? I am going to ask a question on a new thread now else, but that lot looks impressive. :):yeah:
