Does anybody in the SH3 community use voice commands?

I've been having a look around and there is a mod for SH4 by minsc_tdp and edited by tomcattwo for SH3, and there are plenty of other voice/gaming software around nowadays. To me this seems like one of the ultimate immersion mods that I've not heard anybody refer to in my short time here!

Although I don't think the wife would be happy in the middle of the night with me shouting ALAAAARRRRMMM trying to get through the Bay of Biscay!

Surely if it's one thing that subsimmers have got, it's patience

yeah thats for sure.... BUT... voice commands can get VERY frustrating
like i said it took hours to config voice 2 text..... plus i wouldnt be sure if a voice command mod would allow you to config it to your voice...... and you may end up having your missus yell at you to do the dishes or something and you crash dive while in your base.... straight into the sea floor lol

Firstly, the missus doesn't shout - she's much scarier this way!

Secondly, we've got a dishwasher (tried without when we moved but then baby came along, it's worth saving for/getting one!) and am very good at loading/unloading it (better than the wife - I used to fix them so know how to get the best out of them (dishwashers, not the wife)).

Thirdly, I can (do) crash dive all on my own whilst in shallow water. Although better now, I had two computers rigged to same monitor and used to play one game on one, whilst on here (and FB) with the other, I occasionally got the keyboards mixed up and I'd go to type something and hear all sorts of calamitous goings on as I scrambled to change the monitor back...! :har:

I take your point though, but I wonder how 'much improved' voice software has got over the years?

I use VAC and enjoy sailing in and out of harbors under voice control. It works great but it will send a surface command now and then and that can be fatal, so I removed that command from my VAC profile. VAC sets up in minutes.

I use a custom version of Sh3speech, and I love it. I could never get the commands for the mouse to work, so I custimized the program to only handle key commands. Even there I did a fair amount of customizing. That still lets me control 75% or so with voice commands, the rest require clicks of the mouse. Here's a thread:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=132228&highlight=sh3speech

Once you've figured out how it all works, you'll find it is very 'customizable'.

Have you read Tomcattwo's whole post?

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=132228

Towards the bottom are the requirements, including:

'Microsoft Speech Recognition Application 5.1 (SAPI 5.1) must be installed.'

...but, Win7 (if that's what you use?) ships with SAPI 5.4, I don't know if 5.4 is compatible - you'd have thought so but it is Microsoft we're talking about! :yeah:

I downloaded the SH3Speach and over a whole month twicked/changed some of the the commands with my Plantronics headset. Works beautifully. Total immersion as I have my 19 " desktop monitor to display the navigation map when I request it and go stand there and do the calculations. I have a a VGA splitter and one goes to an old 14" monitor I bought on ebay for £20. This is mounted on a shelf at eye level. When I want to look at periscope I go to this and view it through an 1.5" aperture. My 50" TV is also connected up to the pc via HDMI and this gives the living room a visual background for atmosphere. When I go to the bridge I stand on a small raised platform and look at the 50" TV. I'm totally free to move around the room as my headset is wireless. All monitors always show the same view but I'm only looking at one monitor at a time so it doesn't matter if the 50" TV is also showing the periscope view because I'm looking at it only 'through' the 14" monitor. Changing views is done by the appropriate command e.g. when I want to work on the periscope I command 'attack scope' and move to the 14" monitor. I have the feeling that the whole flat is the submarine because I can move to the kitchen (galley) if I want and me (the Captain) can make a coffee whilst I can still hear what's going on, as in real life. I'm trying to work on plastic tubing with a bar across and hole through it to act as my periscope. I'm trying to fix a keyboard to it so that when I turn it it presses against the arrow keys and thereby moves the periscope view left/right. Any ideas as to how we can increase such 'physical' realism will be much appreciated. Time to move away from the desk I say!:salute:

If you have a water storage tank in the attic, I'm sure you could put some monitors up there for a full 360 degree view from the periscope that you are making. Just find a way of attatching the periscope to your keyboard with some little servos and lengths of plastic this should be possible. So when you go scope up, it actually surfaces through the water in the tank. Maybe when it gets dark you can change all your bulbs to red ones too, also if the weather is bad and you are going to go outside. Place a bucket of water on the door, so when you open the hatch you get a realistic atlantic drenching :yeah: :O:

But on a serious note, that sounds like it could be quite good if you get it working :D

using a servo for manipulating the arrows on the keyboard...excellent idea, thanks, was planning on a system of string and pulleys. Now I just got to get down to an RC model shop.

That is so much more eloquent than I would have put it - but the sentiment is the same, pics or it never happened. :D

For the 'scope you may want to try some old skiing goggles as the eye pieces.

yes, I will include pictures of my project. At the moment I'm figuring out how to built the periscope. I'm scouring ebay/internet for ideal bicycle grips and pipes. I've come across an article about the actual uboat periscopes; apparently there are only three left in the world. One was used on the filming of 'DasBoot' so I'm going to be watching that tonight. To understand a little of my reasoning you must know that I'm a WW2 German soldier reenactor. I played Call of Duty loads on computer then I figured that I could try and make my experience of WW2 more realistic. So now, 3-4 times a year, I'm camping in the woods and fighting the Battle of the Bulge all over again!

Yes, I must see this submarine room.

Modify some washing machines or dryers so that you have two rows of exposed machinery. It will be incredibly loud and you have a good chance of losing a hand!

You'll never get the same effect using the keyboard to move the periscope. There's no gradients of spin. It's either still, or spinning at high speed.

What you want is the peri to be hooked up to a second cordless mouse running horizontally on the inside of circular "ring". It could be part of the periscope assembly. That way the rate of spin on the screen is represented by the rate of spin of the periscope and mouse.

Wow! Brilliant idea terra-pirate! You also gave me another idea as to how i may rig up a pair of 'binoculars' when I'm viewing the 50" TV 'on deck'. Two tubes with a cordless mouse between them. A rotating ball (as in a wired mouse) will be rotated against the laser optical aperture thereby making the binocular view on screen move around. :yeah:

That's actually a good idea. I was thinking some sort of geared servo rigged upto a voltage meter, allowing the USB software to determine angle of movement.

But if you put that mouse over a graduated (think barcode) surface, then there a lot of possible applications for amateur motion controls.

Also, I don't think there's anything specific (aside from a cheap DYI ROV), but at www.revision3.com (http://www.revision3.com), look for the cancelled show Systm under archived shows. Lots of cool tech DYI projects you may find an application for. Things like when Gmail gets a new mail, a physical flag gets raised on your machine. Could do something similar for alerts from crew members.
