i am considering making the switch to sh4, but only for the u-boat missions.

now, can anyone tell me, what is better, in terms of everything between SH3 with GwX3.0 and SH4-uboatmissions/operation munson.

has anyone tried out both of them? if so, can you tell me which one is better in terms of u-boats available, amount of ships, loading times, theatres of operation, engine limitations, etc

im too scared to ask in the sh4 forum because i have heard a very rough bunch live there

I havent played SH4 mate but I think it depends on YOUR preference of theatre above all, either the dark gloomy Atlantic or the warm tropical Pacific. For me the European/Atlantic theatre is my domain, plus GWX3 adds so much to the stock game that I dont think SH4 has even got,yes SH4 graphics may be better but the gameplay might not,and realism and immersion is EVERYTHING to a submarine simulation.
And as for this so called 'rough bunch' in the SH4 forum?,dont let em bother you,its clear yes that a minority ARE rude and arrogant when it comes to newcomers to a game,or if they simply were after information that has been posted before without your knowledge, but most folk are friendly and supportive.
You'll be better staying here with us pal,the Grey Wolves! ,not the sissies that bask on the deck playing cards all day in the Pacific sun,we like our weather cold and wet and the sea even colder! There is nothing finer than ploughing through a North Sea storm on the surface at 16kts chasing a hapless merchant chugging along completely oblivious to whats coming next :arrgh!:

I play both, so I happily frequent both forums.

Most of us over there are a pretty friendly bunch to be honest with you.

Sure, you may come across the occasional Yahoo, but you'll find that in most walks of life. :yep:

Hah, as if we play cards all day.
That is so not the case.
There's also beach volleyball and a frisbee tournament.
I tell ya, it's a tough life in the USN :03:

How about basketball, you could stand at one end and see who gets to dunk the ball through the hatch first? :woot:
I hate basketball mind you hehe

If you already have the game, then yes, why not?
If you gotta buy it, then I'm not so sure.

The SH4 U Boat game does not seem quite as fully developed as SH3 + (insert supermod name here).
Operation Monsun (U Boat Supermod for SH4), is very well done.
But you gotta remember, Lurker has had to do the whole thing pretty much on his own.
GWX (other mods are available!) had a dedicated team working on it for years.
Plus if you look in the downloads section, or mods forum for SH3 you notice a whole bunch of additional mods that have been tailored to add onto GWX.
SH4 UBM never got that sort of love. Which is a shame.

If you really want a decent appraisal of the comparisons/differences between OM and GWX, I'd ask Sailor Steve when he logs on.
He is running multiple careers in both, so is in a better position than me to answer your question.

i have looked at the monsun mod, wow, it looks like sh3s campaign, but is it as detailed?

As far as the actual campaign goes, yes, it is very detailed. As for the other parts, it still need some adding-to. The harbors are nothing like GWX's or WAC's or LSH3's. For some reason there are no neutral ships, so you can sink anything you like except for friendlies. On the other hand the crew and the uniforms are beautiful, and the crew management is just about perfect (except for the part where you have to move crew to the guns yourself, and make sure the gun and bridge crews are moved when submerged or they can be killed by depth charges.

There are parts that are better and parts that are worse. The biggest lack in SH4 is the attention from modders that SH3 gets. As was said above, if you already own it it can't hurt to give it a try. If you have to buy it, stick with SH3 unless you really want the graphics. I play both, but then I play both sides of SH4 too.

It doesn't seem likely at this time, but you never know.

There are new mods being made currently, such as Ducimus' new IXD2 upgrade, but nobody is working on the harbors as far as I know.

operation monsoon says it has new u-boats like the iid. can you tell me anything about them? eg the insides, realism etc

iid has always been one of my favorite uboats, so i hope that its good in sh4

The Type II is in OM. I run a IIb all the time. Haven't played a IId, but I'm certain it's there.

is there more u-boats in sh4 then 3?

Sailor Steve

Same boats, as the SH4 ones are taken from SH3.

but there is no playable iib boat in sh3....

what about the ships? are there many of them?

sergei

Yes, loads of 'em.
A lot of them are conversions of IABL's Merchant Fleet Mod.
They look real pretty.

and the ships in gwx? are they in there? or is it a breach of copyright or something.gwx has about 200 ships dosent it? what about enemy submarines and aircraft? (well there would be more enemy subs then sh3 i would guess because of sh4...)

can you describe the types of missions? because i heard that sh4 has missions other then go to square XX and wait there 24 hours

No

From what I've heard, there are plenty of aircraft. Dunno about the enemy subs though. Probably.

After you have patroled your AO for the required amount of time (I can't remember, 4 or 5 days I think), you can radio BDU and they give you a new AO.

Jankowski

would it be hard to convert ships from gwx into sh4?

Further to previous answers, I started a similar thread a few weeks ago - you may want to take a peek.:D

I think the upshot is to try both (with GWX and OM), if you like both then all well and good, if you don't then the worst is you're a couple of [insert your currency here] down - flog it onwards, no loss!

You can read all the forum in the world on the two games but only you can decide if you like it.
