View Full Version : Missing Atmosphere

Have you guys ever felt that there is something missing from Silent Hunter IV, you know, like other event of the war?
Like for example,
bombing raids on other islands or seeing formations of B-24s conducting raids against Japanese Islands. These events were important to the war or see carrier sorties against Japanese bases.
I still see wreckage in Pearl Harbor in 1943 and by then the Pacific Fleet was rebuilt and had been rebuilt for over a year already.
It just lacks that war feeling atmosphere and it doesn't seem to include all the other unrelated events that took place that weren't relevant to sub warfare, but were relevant to the war in other terms. I want to see skip bombing by B-25s, attacks by Bristol Beaufighters. Why hasn't anyone added the Bristol Beaufighter to the game?
It would be more accurate to the game and wouldn't feel like anything was missing, like what GWX does to Silent Hunter III.

It details bombing raids and the missions flown by the 8th Air Force against targets in Lorient France or St Nazaire when your U-boat pens are being bombed by the 8th Air Force.
Let's add some variety to Silent Hunter IV.

You mean like this: AFB_Beaufighter from FOTRS or this: AFB_Beaufighter from Real Fleet Boat, or perhaps this from TMO: AFB_Beaufighter?
As for seeing squadrons of planes, that has been one big complaint is there are too many planes.:haha: They are there, you just don't see them. You are in a submarine and unless they are attacking you, you don't see them because of the altitude.

Well...no! :03:
Also, quite a few have pulled into ports only to discover the game is conducting an attack of said port. These events are in the game. Lurker spent many months making sure the major engagements are on time evey time. Whether you are there or not is entirely up to you as capt. The only thing missing from SH4 is FM sonar IMO. :03:

The Pacific is a very very big ocean. If you see a bombing raid etc then it is pure luck for the most part unless your specific mission takes you within the vicinity of a specific action. Let's face it, being on a submarine was pretty quiet and for a good part of the journey, pretty boring and routine.
If you want to see skip bombing etc then IL2 1946 will fill the bill but then you won't be able to sit on a sub and watch! Can't have it both ways.
Your point about the Pearl Harbour wreckage is valid but I almost never start from in the harbour so don't see it and am currently operating out of Midway. I'm not sure if the wreckage can be modded 'out' at a certain period and replaced with 'new' ships at dock etc.

I'm sure somebody can.

You tell 'em Peabody! (The reason no planes are visible in your careers is because they are all doing a mass attack on my boat in my game--all the time!)
TMO2.0/RSRDC-....(Plane spotted...Long range.) Sound familiar?

Occasionally you get lucky.
I remember I was on my way to my AO one time when sonar called out a number of high speed contacts about 10Kyds out. As luck would have it I was in perfect position for an attack. Plotted out their course, submerged, got into perfect firing position, had their range, speed and course dialed in perfectly, all tubes ready.
One last shooting observation, so up scope and turn to bearing.
And there they were.. the Stars and Stripes on every ship. Seems I had been stalking a Carrier Battle Group for the last half hour. They were clearly on their way somewhere important and I had just happened to stumble on them.
That was atmosphere. It just doesn't happen very often.

The wreckage actually has an exit date assigned but it does not work. Maybe someone with more experience than me would know why.
The wreckage is a "location data" from the terrain folder, and the 3D model is listed as the actual .dat file, that may be part of the reason, It is not listed as the actual 3D object name.

I don't think there is such a person!

If you get in the right places you can see more. Planes can't destroy land items, but they will attack shore guns. Several carrier raids with planes against ports will show up such as the raids against Rabaul. Large groups of planes attack all the ships, shore guns, ect. Fun to watch several different types of planes attack ports. Per history the carrier planes show up right on time to destroy Rabaul.
Certainly you can watch large surface battles with ships and planes. Per history during the battle of Leyte ,US planes attacked Kurita's Center Force and sunk the Musashi, the 2nd Yamato class BB. Be in the right place and you'll see several large squadrons of US carrier planes attacking the Center Force. Fairly amazing battle when all those warships open up on the planes. You have all those big capital ships, around 100 planes dropping bombs, flak, planes blowing up, ships sinking...gets rather intense. Then you'll see lots of pink smoke from downed pilots. Just have a strong rig or all the action will bring your rig to a crawl.
Stock doe's a poor job, but RSRD a much better to watch the large surface battles. These get rather intense. Last night I watched the battle of Surigao and watched the old BB's, Nevada, New Mexico, Penns, ect..take on the jap Fuso's. Watching those big guns go offi s intense, great sound.
Really fun if you're dived and under a BB being attacked. You can hear the big guns, shells hitting the water, ect. This is a rather large surface battle with BB's, CA's, many DD's from both sides. Just sit in the middle and take out the wounded.
You can watch dozens of great surface battles, even join in. Would love to see more planes added, still I've had allied planes rob me several times blowing up targets I'm in the process of attacking.

I spent hours trying to find the battles in Lyete. The planes flew over my position and disappeared on the Map. I never did find anything. Gave up. I assumed it was TMO/RSRDC kicking me in the ass once again--they love to do that you know.

"Aircraft spotted", yup, I'm patrolling between the Marshalls and the Gilberts and am spending a LOT of time ducking aircraft. Considering the location I guess it's to be expected. I did manage to splash a Pete prior to crash diving but it helped that I have 3 AA positions on the sub (kinda makes up for the missing surface search radar which I noticed was removed after leaving base, d'oh!!!).

Be happy you don't see bombers in formation. Their fighter escorts were sometimes known to drop on subs. Friend or foe, they would attack them. Six 50s from a Corsair, or Hellcat, F4F-4 Wildcat, would not be good for your subs integrity.

You can hardly miss most of the battles of Leyte. The Center force comes through the Sibuyan Sea to enter the San Bern Straits. US aircraft attack it in mass why in the Sibuyan Sea. If you go west out from the San Bern Straits during Oct 24 you can catch the actual attack of US planes in mass. Again, with so many contacts it becomes slow play unless you have a rig.
If you want to fight the Center force just sit in the San Bern Straits Oct 25, that night they come through there. It's so narrow you will see them.
The San Bern was left unguarded in reality, but best place to ambush. You can follow them as they leave the straits and watch the big battle off Samar where the center force attacked the US jeep carrier force. Not a large battle in game, because the forces turn away from each other.
The battle of Surigao is also easy, just sit in the strait the 25. You should see several US TF on radar, including all the old BB's from Pearl. You can't miss the JP's coming in from the south with such a narrow strait. Course you have to pick which batte to watch since both happen same night.
Harder to find the JP northern carrier fleet since it's in the big ocean, but it's there.
If you're at these places at the right date and the JP's aren't showing up, sounds like RSRD ain't working.

You can't destroy land objects for several reasons.
Say a Wave of Bombers hits a port.
Why do we see no damages?
1:
The Port is a Static Object based on a given square with no damages assigned.
2:
Each House, Factory, Dock, Etc, is called from Library Files and have no damages assigned to them.
3:
Without a damage Zone assigned? We can not switch 3D models,
get really cool effects going on, and so forth.
How do we fix this:
Assign damage models to everything!
