I have used this to point my SH3 commander to my GWX installation but it just won't find it. I have run the game once and created a folder in My Documents called GWX ( with multish3).

Here is the syntax(is that the term?)

"C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander - GWX\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunter - GWX" and now this

"C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander - GWX\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunter - GWX"

SilentHunter - GWX is what I have named the installation and it is in the path stated.

I have tried a space after the /l switch and I have put : after it as well, all to no avail.

It tell me it can't find the main cfg file that should be in My Documents and is.

The most recent versions of Commander no longer use the /l switch - there is a place in the Commander interface where you tell it which install of the game to launch. You can either type in the path or use the "Browse" button there to locate the desired .exe file.

Can't remember where exactly but should be somewhere in Commander's options screens.

I know this because the last time I reinstalled I also spent considerable time trying to make the /l switch work.

Thank you that has sorted it out:DL although I had to run the stock SH3 installation to get SH3Cmdr to run. Obviously running the GWX version of the game to create a folder called 'GWX' in My Documents isn't the way to go. It seems you first have to run the stock game to create a folder called SH3 in my Documents and then run the GWX version.

I have several game installs, with and w/o GWX.

Procedure was always to create the game folder, copy the multiSH3 exe file into it, run that to choose the name of the folder for My Docs, run the SH3 exe file from that folder to create the designated My Docs folder.

Then I'd run the Commander install for that game install and tell it which .exe file to launch.

I have a separate install of Commander for each game install but I don't think it should make a difference, any install of Commander should open whichever game exe you point it to as long as that exe has been run at least once to create its own My Docs folder.

But I have always set up the stock install with Commander first before going on to set up the others, so that may indeed make a difference.

When SH3Cmdr is first run it will query the registry for your SH3 installation. If it can't find a valid installation, it will ask you to find it. If it does find a valid installation, it will default to it, obviously and logically.

If you "behind the scenes" copy and paste your SH3 installation and rename it, the registry will still point to the path where you first installed SH3, and thus, so does SH3Cmdr. It doesn't matter where you first installed it, or what mods you've added to it, SH3Cmdr will default to it as your SH3 installation.

Thus why you had to run your default installation first. Had you renamed your default installation, SH3Cmdr would have asked you for a valid path and connected straight to it.

Once again thank you both for the info, I now understand what to do next time I have to reinstall SH3.:) I have to do this periodically as I like to edit the main cfg to give me torpedoes and other equipment and also give all my crew medals via sh3cmdr to stop fatigue. Because of these actions, eventually the game will ctd.
