Work has begun on a mod that will increase the number of named locations on the map. It is based on Jace11's Map Labels mod and includes all labels from that mod.

The reason is that im tired of sitting having to look up into an atlas or on a pc based seachart to write up my patrolreports. I like to write passages that contains details about where we are more specific then "in the yellow sea" or "Near the Bonin's". I would rather write:

"Patrolled on surface in southwestern part of the area covering the route from TRUK to SAIPAN which passes north of NAMONUITO.
Proceeded south the night of the fifteenth to patrol east of MOGAMI and GRAY FEATHER banks prior to assuming new patrol station
south of ULUL Island."

And that is possible if you have the names in front of you.

So far i have used the names that are in the pc based navigations program "NaviCharT" but have superseded those names with the names that were used in patrol reports by US captains. If you find that one of these names are wrong please just give me a notice either in a email to the email stated in the read-me or in a private message on subsim.com.

I'm expanding the level of islands that will be shown. But all islands will not be visible at all zoom levels. The smaller island's names in an island chain (fx. Bonin Islands) will not be visible until you zoom in so much that with the next zoom step you will not be able to see the name "Bonin Islands" any more. So at the same time you can see the island chain name you can also faintly see the names on individual islands. Then when zooming further in you can only see the name on the individual islands (HAHA-JIMA, IO-JIMA, CHICHI-JIMA).

There are some places where individual islands are named with a port. That is due to the ports being placed with the names in the first place. I don't know yet what mods (or official patch) that places them there, but I will properly try to solve it one of three possible ways.

1. Corporate with the modder to only have one entry for each island, be that by label or port
2. Make my mod compatible with a specific mission file that will have the ports deleted or
3. Delete the doublet entry's by removing the labels on islands that have a port with the island name (my least favourite way)

In this mod ver 0.1 there are 53 additions to Jace11's "More Map Labels v. 1.3".

I concentrated on the following groups of islands by following the USS Tang on its first two patrols. Caroline Islands, Bonin Islands, Mariana Islands and Palau Islands.

Next will be the places the USS Tang visited on its patrols 3 and 4 and properly also the Ryukyo Islands.

Any modder are given permission to use this mod as a part of his mod, as long as credit is given to Jace11 and my self. Jace11 should be asked first if his part of this mod can be used. He did not put a disclaimer into his mod, and did not respond to my private messages so i opted to include his work into this for 1) preservation of compatibility and 2) as a tribute to his pioneering and effort.

So in honour of Jace11 - Hurrrraa, Hurrraa, Hurraaaaa!

I know from experience, this is a lot of work. I'm looking forward to using your mod, it sounds great.

I've got my pom-poms out for this one. I also keep a patrol diary and consantly have to go to my trusty 1969 Rand McNally Atlas and the O'Kane books to to get island names. The current map mods are really good but would love it if every speck and shoal had a label. Looking forward to it. :salute:

Anyone with suggestions for the mod??

So far I also included Dangerous Ground and some of the lesser Straits around the Philippines. The Palau Islands are all on as are the Marianas and the Bonin's.

Next i'm working on the Luzon Strait Islands and passages.

I'd be happy to have that done.

Do you mean this mod Charts Overhaul for TMO 1.9 ?

No, mate.

Hell, Iīve got the mod installed but canīt find that damned link anymore....:damn:

The NMMO-Mod I mean has coloured terrain details and additional information like the "Dangerous Ground" thing. Itīs an older one hidden deep in this Forum.

I think the one your are looking for is:

Navigation Map Make-Over with Airbases
By Bryan Jackson, (Nbjackso)

I will see if I can find the link, I believe it is in the DL section.

EDIT: Here it is.

Jap man, thatīs it:yeah:

And itīs full TMO1.9 compatible. Also RFB 2.0 except two Aircraft based files which can be leaved out without any probs (RSRDC conflict I think)

Hmmm that looks out of the scope of what I'm aiming for. But it will very likely be much more easy to implement this mod into that instead. I think you need a certain level of skill to "mess" with that mod. Not ruling anything out though, but it will not be 1. priority for me.

Update:
Luzon Strait is almost complete now.

This sounds pretty cool, Mav. If you would let me know how you're doing it and how it affects load times (if at all) I would appreciate it. I've long wanted to have something similar for the Atlantic. In my own u-boat patrol reports I'm always using National Geographic maps to specify things like "6 km off the Cape Finistere lighthouse."

Wildo Steve.

My best guesstimate from memory (i have not timed with and without mod) tells me that it does not mean anything for loading time.

I'm not sure the .dds's are even loaded to memory at the load, they might only get loaded when you look at the map. Anyone with knowledge on that ?

Great! All I need to know is how to do it. I'll be glad to take on all the European stuff.
