As many of you I'm sure have noticed, SH5 continues the Silent Hunter tradition of being released with all the propellers spinning the wrong directions... Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen ANY ship, submarine or otherwise, that had twin props rotating towards one another as seen in game.
Anyhow, could anyone rig up a fix like the one we got for SH4?

Back in the 1890s the British were building the first destroyers. They briefly experimented with having the screws turn inwards, but found that this created instability and the ships tended to wander from their assigned course, requiring constant input from the helmsman. With outward-rotating screws the ship tended to hold its course much better.
So you're absolutely right. With a very few exceptions all multi-screw ships have propellors that rotate outward.

This again comes down to the granny files which at present we can't change. Sh3/4 didn't use granny and it was "easy" to adjust animations.
You are mistaken, it was not easy... it was hardcoded. In SH4 the trick was used, which led to discrepancy of propellers and engines... it was possible to see at damages...

And no, reversing the animation is not the solution. Currently the propellers turn the right direction for their incorrect layout, that is, when going forward each prop is spinning the right way to be moving water in the right direction. Swapping it would make it look like you were in reverse when you're going forward.
This is why Anvart's creative solution involved swapping the shafts, but also kept the (game) engine from registering the change, so the right prop was still connected to the right engine, even though its model was for the 'left' prop.

Actually ships are notoriously difficult to control when backing up. The never go the way you want them to.
Yet another gamer tactic that's not addressed in any game.

Is this possibly because the spinning wash from the props is down and away from the rudder ? Another thought, would Type VIIC's have this problem? Their rudders are centered on the props...
