welcome aboard

for TMA i would recommened you to check this out: http://www.commanders-academy.com/wiki/index.php?title=Molon_Labes_ASW_Training_Mission

At this site there are many other good sources.
Also http://subguru.com/downloads.html you find many good sources.

And yes you should forget everything you know about submarine tactics you have learned from ww2 the modern subs are completely different.

I dont know how much experience you have in ww2 especially your realism settings but i would recommened you to let the autocrew do the TMA first and try to learn the other stations. When you have mastered them go for TMA ;)

Thank you delareon, so you must live with the role as my mentor, Crewchief ..i think i have lots and lots of question during my carrier on a modern boat..:salute:
WW2 sims i played with full realism:know:

He he, feel free to ask!
Well im not really the expert of modern warfare, i will answer every question i have a good answer for. But i think the rest of the "Subsim-Crew" here will also be glad to answer :ping:

Ok, Chrewchiefs, :salute: here my first question after i played the "Demo-mission" with the Kilo-Class..

My Goal is to sunk the freighter, where is escorted by a Destroyer "Oliver Perry" class..
I have at all station my "automatic-crew" on, but i deactivated "show the truth"..

When i recieved the active sonar pings from the destroyer and raised my ESM-Antenna, why can my automatic crewman this destroyer not identified as an destroyer and as an destryoer from "Perry" class..
Enough data there would to be? or?

regards

I guess you found the DW Wiki ... my suggestion, for starters use the walkthrough for the 2 Demo missions. Learning on the job - so to speak.

As for your particular question ... the ESM station gives you multiple options in regard to what the contact (i.e. the transmitting station) could be. The autocrew simply isn't smart enough to select one of them - the classification is up to you.

For some reason, ESM is basically the one station where you don't have an autocrew option (periscope too, but that one makes sense), so you have to mark all contacts yourself. If a signal is too weak you won't get a classification, though often if you leave the cursor on the same radar contact for a few sweeps, you'll get one. This can happen with strong signals as well if you only catch them with the cursor as they are fading, but all you have to do is wait for another sweep and you'll get the ID.

I don't actually think you get multiple options in ESM like you do in narrowband sonar. I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure in ESM you either have an ID or not, there's no in between. This is, of course, another realism flaw in the game, but I'm not going to make an issue of it.

ok, first many thx for your answers, i must say english is not my native language, but i bite me through the wiki and the helpfully links..
Also sorry if my question a little bit noob, but i think...mhhmm..between ww2 and now, theres some little things different..
I try the mission with the kiloclass once again without Sonarcrew/Radarcrew and without "Truth" so i hope to learned the classification easyier, i have a little problems with the Assign the different Contacts..
I will report you immidiately:salute:

(in the last try, i was frustrated, surfaced to get a look, then the last what i see was a rocket..no good idea)

Oh yeah, you really never want to surface at all in this game. If you get frustrated again, just stick the periscope up and look along the bearing of the enemy ping.

..hope anyone can help me, ive done my work with read as i read can in these forums, but now i have a problem..

Kilo-Class-Trainin mission..
Autocrew only on TMA

I can identified with my Sonar the Freighter and the Destroyer, thats no Problem, i assign the freighter as "A" and the Destroyer as "B", the i change to the DEMON because i would find out the Range and the Speed and Bearing..
I have two Buttons above where i normally select assignment "A" and "B"..and heres my Problem, i cannot not select my assigned ships with the buttons above??
What do wrong? Please help:cry:

DEMON can only be used on the Kilo by assigning the contact to a tracker on the kilo's broadband cylindrical array.

At the moment i make my finally "exam" without Autocrew on TMA, am i right thats the goal from the ruler is to bring the points left below in a clear horicontal Line to geht the best solution?

Yes make sure the majority of the dots in the stack line up, and that the lines on the ruler align with the lines of bearing. If you see a change two or three lines of bearing then your target has probably changed course or speed.

THX again for your help, Tlam..
So, at the moment i can following things..
I can identify my target with help from my ESM, also the bearing..
I can measure the speed of my target with help Broadband, Narrowband in combination with the DEMON and the UNSCI (dont know the wright Name at moment..)
With TMA i can plot with the ruler the range, course and then my solution..

First Question:
Have i another Instruments to get the range of the target, that is passive?
I mean beside RADAR an ACTIVE SONAR?
Then, when i will get via active SONAR to get a range, i see nothing??
Not in the Rangeresolution 5/10/20 km??
Why i see nothing after a active Ping? Water to shallow in the Kilo-Demo?

Second Question..
After i fired a wire guided Torpedo, after a few time i have chaos in my TMA what me said probably the PerryClass warning the Cargo Freighter or the CargoFreighter hear the Torpedo in his sonar??
ok, its realisitic that no captain follow strange his cours after attack, but what should i do then?
Must i closed the Range to perhaps 4-5 km to capped the reactionTime?
How is your strategy (question to all experience Player) to sunk the Cargo ship after you fired a wire guided Torpedo..

Hope you are not boring about my question, i read everything! about the usefulls link, but i have some problems with understand..

Thx to all..:salute:

Known bug, place the selector on the LOB of the target and when you hear the ping return mark that range and you should get a contact.

The merchie is probably running since the OHP put your torpedo on LINK. Closer is better for torpedo attack since not only does it reduces reaction time it also can prevent the ship from escaping by simply running the torpedo to exhaustion. The range where this becomes possible is colloquially known as "No Escape Range". It depends on the torpedo and the ship. There was a list somewhere around here but here is the formula:

Sorry, "LOB" ..probably a shortword for "Line of Bearing"?
Understand i wright, before i PING i must took my selector from active SONAR in the Bearing of my target, then i make a Ping..and then shows me the contact where i can read the range?

(note: meanwhile i have the lawmi-Mod installed, only for information, probably they gives another "rules" or something like this..
Not we spoke from different suspisition)

No .. you can't see the return. But you can still hear it. You can also see the 'wave' of returning background noise, as the screen refreshes after ping. In the moment you hear the ping, it must be on this 'wave'. So you can easily (and rather exactly) mark the range.

I too think it is a bug, but the other way. You should not hear the return. You will hear the return on ANY distance, as long as ground or layer effect don't block the return completely. The return should get weaker with distance, to a point, where you can't hear it. Due to this bug you can never actually hear 'weak' return in DW. There either is return, or not.

Anyway .. display should reflect audible feedback, and in fact it could be even a bit better, because it can average multiple pings.

Sorry, please believe me i will no one annoy with my question about the sonar, i need a step by step explain..
What i understand..
I make a PING with a range (5/10/20..) that i selected above right..
ok..in these testmission i hear! no contact at 15km, but i hear a contact at 10km..
The Display shows me nothing because its a bug, everything understood..

To get a Range, step by step, what i have to do with my locator in the screen? (the locator with the movement Hole, hope you understand what i mean..)..and what i see after refreshing in my screen? Or in the green/blacked mixed waves?

Ok lets say you have a passive contact on a target bearing 010 degrees. You want to use active to determine the range. Click on the display on bearing 010 so the line with the selector box is on that bearing (this is for reference.) select range scale as desired, normally 20,000 yards is the max but 40,000 could produce results on a large target. Select single ping and ping. Data will begin to flow in, looking like static. When you hear a ping return click on bearing 010 degrees where the data has just come in and press mark. If you get a contact entered you have located the range of the target, if not wait for another ping return (that return was of another contact not o the bearing of your target).

If you don't get a return on the bearing of your target, try increasing the range or marking to left or right of where you heard the return ping since the contact may have moved.

I - M - A - M - A - R ...thank you..
*noticed*

Now i get it! I take my Selector in the Bearing where my Target is to get the Range..
Then, if i hear a Response of my Ping, i cklick immediatly on the "Mark" button, the round hole from my selector must switched to the point of the Range and then i have my distance:salute:
