im just wondering if it is possible to find and engage enemy subs, i would love to opertunity to pit my skills against one, but for some reason subs do not seem to want to play with me.
also a slight enquiery, and problem.
when i brought my game i got it from ebay. to my misfortune it came without the cd key. not sure why, but i was able to ask why, and apparently the guy lost everything but the game and caseing.

You might want to read the forum rules about pirating.
SUBSIM Review has a longstanding policy against software piracy. We do NOT allow discussion or even mention of warez, abandonware, peer-to-peer game swapping, game cracks, illegal download sites, or illegal file-sharing. Nothing will get you banned faster than pointing people to illegal software distribution sites. Don't ask for serial numbers, manuals, or cracks. Any admission that you have in your possession illegal software can and usually will result in revocation of your Radio Room forum account and permanent ban. We do not care what you do on your computer in your home, but do not discuss it here.
Support computer game programmers buy legally purchasing their work. They have to eat too, you know. You may get yourself banned, that's not up to me.
But if it was me, AND you indeed did get a pirated version form ebay, I would report them to ebay and get my money back and get them banned. If in fact what you say it the truth. But it doesn't make sense to me that you would buy one from ebay if you had one "on the way". It takes longer to get one from ebay then from a reputable dealer.

i have only recently ordered it, like a few hours because i wanted try online but without the cd key i cant so a freind said to order one. the game disc it self looks authentic as you would say as does the case, and so i had no reason to suspect anything it is my first time buying on ebay and so i wasnt sure what to look for.
my friend who is a wiz with computer just popped round and is currently checking it over, he knows alot about pirated and unpirated cd's so i'll give you an update.

alright, my mate says i did the right thing ordering a new game, he say the disc it's self was original and has since been changed so that the game will install, but would need a crack.
as i old you below so im not hiding anything there, he says that the person must have copied and changed a torrent based version and replaced the disc files with the torrent ones. so that the game no longer asked for a cd- key.
i have sent a email to ebay and have yet to get a reply, i hope that i dont get banned as i was just an unlucky choice off ebay. im currently un-installing my game and have gotten my friend to lend me his one until mine arrives.
im sorry if i have been stupid in asking for a cd-key to have.

I would be careful about treading these waters. Over in the SHV Forum we had a very heated debate (spanning 3 or so threads) in regards to a cracked game, why thread discussing crack was closed and so on.
Like it or not this Forum blanches at the mention of a pirated game or cracked game. So if you have any troubles with this I'd PM a Moderator or something instead of proclaiming to the world about this.
Just be careful :) Wouldn't want you to get Brig Time for an innocent mistake

I don't see this issue, provided the purchase was made unknowingly AND the software is not used. I wouldn't destroy the disc because it is evidence of piracy.
If you purchase a cd under the assumption of validity, then ask others the problem and learn it is pirated does not mean you are guilty of blatant and intentional piracy. It does mean you are out a few bucks with a junk cd. Sorry mate.
What is peaking my curiosity is the issue of the authentic cd. It is not possible to change files on a CD-R or DVD-R. So how did the seller change files on a frozen media, unless he printed off an actual SH4 cd.
that is my 0.02

So all that about pirate this and that ... whatever.... back to the question at hand here... where can you find and engage an enemy sub? :hmmm:

bump hulls is a good way!:haha:
I would think if they are surfaced either visual or sonar. Maybe radar too...
submerged only if they are cranking more than 100 rpm

I suppose multiplayer would be the best way to go sub vs. sub.
Get a clean copy of SH4, it doesn't cost much.

You could add some to the campaign using the SH4 mission editor. However, I've tried to make missions in the past involving enemy subs and they've not been very successful.
As far as I remember, the stock game doesn't really let you do any damage to subs, I recall firing at a sen toku sub and watching it just bounce around in the water, taking no damage. Similar experiences using a u-boat against fleet boats.
This was some time ago, so that may have changed, but I think that's the situation at least in stock.
I have seen a mod in the downloads section which makes the sen toku destroyable, but haven't yet been able to try it.

Subs have to be converted to ships in order for them to even move. Once you do that then you can use them in missions. They are in some of the mods.

I believe they are included in campaign and some missions (though they are VERY rare.. you need to go out into the Indian ocean to find one) in TMO and or RSRDC for 1.4

enemy subs are in RSRDC. It even has single missions featuring sub v sub:

the problem is that they only act as surface ships, namely, they do not submerge or fire torpedoes.
SH5 has actual enemy subs that will fire torps at you and submerge.

Do you think it is possible to convert the SH5 sub AI to SH4?
I would imagine it isn't, but you never know!

Just an add on to the other comments. Since the AI subs are converted to ships, they will fire the deck gun at you if you are surfaced. And they are much more maneuverable than the big ships so they evade torpedoes easier. (unless the values have been Modded.)
We do have a submerged sub in the Japanese Campaign (if I can ever get it done) but it has a problem, the game thinks it is on the surface so DDs fire guns at it not DCs.
My old memory is not working so good. But someone was working on a sub quite a while ago that would submerge and fire torps, but I never heard anymore about it. So I don't remember if it was ever finished, or if it was in a Super MOD.

Just FYI:
My store bought (Fry's) copy of SH4 Gold did not come with a CD Key and I've never been prompted for one.

As per forum rules, i think we should all get banned. I mean we are doing something worst than pirates. We are flat out sinking any enemy ship we come across. At least pirates sometimes left the crew to leave on a life raft and took the ship.
And than someone just mentions a hint about "real" piracy and it's bye bye.:hmmm:
OK, sorry. Sarcasm off:D:arrgh!:
Enemy subs... hmmm... where are you hiding little one?

Well, I don't know about you, but I didn't see him go bye, bye. Just explaining the situation so he won't go bye, bye.
Ok, sarcasm back on.
Now let me think where would a sub hide.....hmmmm....looked in all the trees.....looked up in the sky.......hmmmmm.....that's a tough one.

Actually, in SH1 enemy subs worked like they should. I was in a Narwhal class once and got torpedoed by a Jap sub while I was on the surface! :haha:
