One man's ugly is another man's beauty. That last one looks kind of cool, although that crane looks like it'd be horribly unbalancing.
Now THIS is ugly:

The Abegweit?
http://www.biocrawler.com/w/images/9/99/Abegweit_1982_1.jpg
I actually steered that boat when I was a kid. I used the radar and comunications radio too. I wouldn't call it ugly. Top heavy maybe, but not ugly. I did spin the wheel around hard to starboard and then back to center. The entire ship leaned heavy then settled back on course. Scared the hell out of the bridge crew, lol!
Ah, childhood memories!:O:

Ah, childhood memories!:O:Amazing it can stay afloat without capsizing. It must have a very heavy keel!
Any reason to make it so tall and narrow?

Probably because it was meant/designed to cary as many trucks and cars as possible and the Northumberland strait between P.E.I. and Newbrunswick/Nova Scotia doesn't have rough weather most of the time. The trucks would hold it down, but they would have to be on the side with the prevailing wind. Also it was an icebreaker, the bow was only a few feet abouve the water line as you can see in the photo.
Definitely not a sea worthy vessel, I agree in retrospect. I wonder if I could have toppled the boat when I was a kid for turning the helm so hard, ha ha!!:haha:
The old Abegweit was a nicer ship I bet, but it was before my time. Here's a photo:

I guess after the Confederation Bridge, ferries were not needed any more.

I walked across it when it opened, took the "John Hamilton Grey" back. Another ferry.
Well here's the Abegweit now! :shifty:

Its a Ro/Ro or Roll on/Roll off ship designed to carry lots of cars and trucks. Some like to call them Roll on/Roll over ships because of their top heavy designs. However since the vehicle deck is enclosed it tends not to take water if it heels over making it harder to capsize than it would appear.

Yes I looked at that on Wiki. Very interesting. At least she may have had some life left in her.:-?
But no, The Lloyd's Registry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd%27s_Registry) shows her as being scrapped on May 9, 2004.

Don't forget that modern ships like her would have a lot of ballast tanks. Come to think of it, I remember all those red and green lights on that. Wow! The things that come back.

Ships don't capsize because they have more hull horizontly in the water than vertical isnt? and water makes a lot of force.

I read about the British using those against colonial POWs during our Revolutionary War. They were anchored in New York harbor. They were hell on earth.
They were also in harbours around Britain and other colonies around the globe. They certainly were not pleasant places nor were the transports that brought prisoners out here.

I really don't know but it would be a bit easier if we knew what side of the ship the lights were on or even if they were centralised.
I should imagine the answer lies somewhere within this site:

Er, air-lubber making a stab at response here.
Think of them as traffic lights indicating right of way to crossing traffic.
If the same is true here, then double lights could be used for unusual traffic situations, like a congested waterway or one with odd depth characteristics where the normal rules are reversed.

What would be the purpose of a green and red light aligned one above another? I thought those coloured lights were for the righty and lefty sides of the floaty thing.Without seeing what type of vessel it is it's pretty hard to say, but it could be a ferry is my first guess. Ferries don't turn around when they go back and forth, so they just switch the lights. Port is starboard, starboard is port, forward is aft, aft is forward.

Your right....knowing what type of vessel it is would be a good first step/indicator.
Sadly, the picture doesn't help in that department.

Indicates when approaching a dangerous object?
Ships must show at least one masthead (on the high mast) light (two for larger vessels).

Maybe that boat with the funny lights is a tug with forward and aft propulsion. It can switch lights depending on which direction it is moving.
Totally a guess...
Or maybe the captain likes to swap his lights and make the ship behind him think its in the wrong lane then change course and run aground. :arrgh!:

That makes a lot of sense. I think you are probably right. Thanks.

I have actually used the term "floaty things" in some of my briefings to describe misc small craft. It usually garners a chuckle from the seniors. :D
