Hi all. I was thinking back to a year or so ago when i last played SH3 before coming back to it recently. Around the period of 1942-43 I was more often than not killed by a new weapon developed by the Royal Navy that scared the begezus out of me every time. It was the Hedgehog anti submarine weapon. Right now i'm only at Dec 1940, so right now i can breath easy. :-?

Has anyone else come across this recently in their campaigns and how does it make you feel?

they are especially deadly in shallow waters.
don't like them at all!

I hate the Hedgehog and I haven't even run into it yet since it's Q1 1941 in my current career.

What's the best defense against Hedgehog other than to not have it fired at you? There has to be some way to deal with it, even if the Germans back then wouldn't have known it.

The only defense I can think of would be constant changing of course when being pursued. Since it is a contact weapon, avoid contact if possible.
Is there a limit in the game on reloads and time to reload of the weapon, cause that was a weak spot with it.
It was complicated, "buggy", and took time to reload.

Your best defence (if you identify an escort armed as such and heading your way) is to put it to the top of your list of priorities, targetwise and take it out.

In '44 most escorts are equipped with it so putting an eel in every escort is not really an option. Oh and unless you cheat use free cam, there is no way to tell which one has and which one doesn't. Last career I had a hell of a time with those things, there is no evasive action against those really, they explode on impact no matter how deep you are... Just run silent, run deep and pray to what ever God you believe in. Good news is they have less then a dozen salvos each of this stuff, so just pray and try to attrite them...

From Das Boot: "The more they shoot the sooner they'll run out."

Its really difficult to escape from those destroyers throwing hedgehogs and depth charges at the same time. Furthermore, there will always be another destroyer (at least) equipped with this weapon looking for you. The psychotic persistence with which the destroyers keep searching for me, the constant ping-sound, the efficiency of these weapons, the tension during the attack run of a destroyer and the agony during the waiting of the next attack run usually make me think that i did really bad attacking that convoy!:shifty:

I know its only a game but it is this very game that frequently puts me under stress. This is why i decided to stop positioning myself among the convoy columns and make long shots instead ; '43 onwards, that is. Who cares about tonnage? Its '43 and its evident that the allies are going to win. Hit (if you can) and run (metaphorically speaking since one of the things you can't grant to Uboats is high underwater speed - relative to surface boats speed). And deep, deep as much as you can.:-?

I agree. At this point I seek only unescorted vessels and with a sharp eye to the sky. No sense being a dead war hero. Live to fight another day.

You can say that again...:yep::up:

I also agree that in '43 or so the focus has to shift away from sinking ships and more toward trying to help my crew (an me) survive the war. It is clear the Ubootwaffe can no longer change the outcome of the war. The boats keep getting sent out to tie down allied forces that would otherwise be used against the homeland, so just being out there and forcing the allies to respond is doing ones duty. (Don't know if the crews of the time understood that, but having read Donitz's memoirs, it's clear that was the goal).

Hello Redbear,

Could you tell me the title of this book, please?

Doenitz wrote two books after the war, only one of which has been translated to English as far as I know. The title, in English, is Memoirs: Ten Years and Twenty Days, available from Amazon. Shop through Subsim and keep Uncle Neal happy! It's definitely worth owning, in my opinion.

Daily journal entries before death:

http://www.history.navy.mil/library/special/u505_personal_diary.htm (http://www.history.navy.mil/library/special/u505_personal_diary.htm)

"Chatelain was so close to U-505 that depth charges (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_charge) would not sink fast enough to intercept the U-boat, and instead opened fire with a hedgehog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedgehog_%28weapon%29) battery before passing the submarine and turning to make an attack with depth charges (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_charge).[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-505#cite_note-NHAHC-16) At around this time one of the aircraft sighted U-505 and dived on it, firing into the water to mark the position while Chatelain fired depth charges. Immediately after the detonation of the charges a large oil slick spread on the water and the fighter pilot overhead radioed, "You struck oil! Sub is surfacing!"[21] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-505#cite_note-20) Less than seven minutes after Chatelain's first attack began, a badly damaged U-505 surfaced less than 600 metres (700 yd) away.[20] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-505#cite_note-p294-19) Chatelain immediately opened fire on U-505's decks with all available automatic weapons, while other ships of the task force and the two Wildcat fighters also opened fire.[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-505#cite_note-NHAHC-16) Wounded and believing that U-505 was seriously damaged, the commanding officer of U-505 ordered his crew to abandon ship — an order obeyed so promptly that scuttling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scuttling) was not completed and the engines continued to run.[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-505#cite_note-NHAHC-16) With the engines still running and the rudder damaged by the detonation of the depth charges, U-505 circled clockwise at approximately 7 knots (13 km/h). Seeing the U-boat turning toward him and believing it was preparing to attack, the commanding officer of Chatelain ordered a single torpedo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torpedo) fired at the submarine – however, the torpedo missed and passed ahead of the now-abandoned U-505.[17]" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-505#cite_note-NHAHC-16)

+10.

Unless you're watching with external cam, you may not know what it is that is hitting the water above you, which definitely adds to the suspense.
I've peeked above the surface once or twice, only to see those things raining down on top of me. it is quite thrilling and some choice words have been said.

Yeah hedgehogs are a bitch. When I used to run external cam I would watch the spread come down on me - sometimes they would rain right past me but not hit me.

If they hit you, though, bad bad news.

Hedgehogs make it hard to dual with destroyers.

First thought is Holy Sh1t what hit me?

I have no idea they are coming so can't really generate any fear of them. Mind you, if you're getting 'hogged' you ain't doing it right.:O:

So what's the best way to evade hogs. I know they sink fast so does depth really matter, or is flank speed and direction change better?

Being in the nightclub, your boat parked in its pen, while some other poor slob of a Kaluen is being pounded. :O:

None of my careers last long enough to encounter hedgehogs; either from boredom or sheer ineptitude on my part. But my current campaign is looking sweet - 18 patrols - just might make it past the early years this time. *crosses fingers* :D
