Evening everyone...
While sitting at work tonight, I had a thought about the issues we're having about trying to get our favorite targets to sink more realistically, ie., when struck on the port side by one of our fish, begin taking on water as the compartments on the port (and possibly starboard) side begin to flood and overflow to the surrounding compartments, and begin to list favoring the side the damage is on.
I've noticed that in almost all of the ships I've looked at in the Granny tool, there are only one main "room" for each section of the ship, centered symmetrically along the longitudinal axis of the ship. What I'm wondering is how difficult it would be to resize/reposition the rooms to create a Port/Starboard subsection of the sections in question in place of the single room, each with their own flooding properties and damage values so that we can better model ship flooding, listing, and capsizing when the right conditions occur.
Certain rooms, such as the Engine/Boiler rooms, which take up large sections of the ship, should remain one room, but cargo holds, crew quarters, machine shops, fuel bunkerage, shaft spaces, etc., could be split into port/starboard halves, and I'm thinking that this could help us into creating better sinking dynamics for all ships in the game.
While I'm not very accomplished with the editors and modding tools as of yet, I invite others to post their ideas here on this subject as to its feasibility. I want to hear what you think.
Thanks again to Neal and everyone who makes this community such a great one to be part of. Good night all.
