Are Ships To Scale V Uboat ... and your view of them ..

I played the Bismark mission last night and sailed along side this huge battleship , the stern of my Uboat where I was standing was 140 ft from the Bismark as it slowly sailed past at 5knts. I was thinking , should it not look bigger ?

140 METERS maybe (nearly 460 feet); definitely not, "140 ft from the Bismark," (ahem, BismarCk!), which would be only 42.7 meters.

Bismarck was 251 meters/823 feet overall.

This is something I've always felt about SH3 and up myself. From your first person view on the bridge you don't quite get the feeling you are sailing alongside large vessels. The scale just doesn't seem quite right.

I've always assumed it is a resource decision; make the ship models a smaller size to keep hardware requirements reasonable.

I think it's just some kind of optical illusion. I assume that because we're not able to see it in real 3D, the models seems smaller.

Ah, but if the model is scaled up, the polygon count may need to go up as well to keep the detail level. Think about rounded surfaces. What may look fine at one size may require a few more polygons to maintain the round shape when scaled up.

Regardless, here are some comparison shots of BBs:

Nice pictures there, shame there is nothing in the foreground for scale

Here's the HMS Nelson battleship with the moon in the foreground to establish scale.

It is interesting in that photo how effective the paint job is on the Bismark in camouflaging the true profile of the ship. At first glance, it really does appear to be a much smaller profile and a different class of ship.

yeah you're right Placoderm. That photo really shows it well , the best I've seen to be honest.

It Definitely WAS 140ft as you say 42.7mts from it

Here's both the Bismark and a VIIC 3D objects side by side.
They are from SH5

Nope.
It's not.

Doing quick measurements on the objects?
They appear to be scaled correctly.
Aside from the wrong measurement in the cfg file for the Bismark.
270 meters is wrong.

Still not working.

My guess is that if you position the boat alongside the ship and look in external view it would look correct. Comparing size with something you have close in view with something further away is tricky. Also there is the camera FOV that makes it appear out of proportion.

And the bismarck photo, it actually took me a few seconds to realize that the ship was a lot longer than it appeared at first glance. I do feel that the b/w photo enhances the effect :D

Oh, and making a 3d model a bit bigger would not require more polygons, since smooth surfaces are made by applying a smoothing effect on the polygons, And the effect would remain intact regardless. The only problem with larger models is that the texture surface is being stretched. Which could make it appear less detailed at closer range.

The 3D models are correct.
Models are built with a setting of 1 Unit = 1 Meter in 3D Max
The Granny exporter reduces the scale for the Game Engine's settings.
So when exported?
They are reduced in size.
But the scale between Units is exact.
No Unit is imported at a different scale that I have found to date.
That would be suicide to do!
We'd catch that in a Heart Beat!
Then the 'Burn The Witches!' stuff would start.

Checked the Tropical Trees.
They seem OK but I'm not a Tree hugger so
not sure if some may be out of scale.
Those use several square objects to paint the trees.
So the object may be larger then what is painted in Game.
But I'll check further just to ease minds.

I'm not concerned about the scale of the trees...

... but do the trees have dynamic shadows? And are the shadows nice and crisp, or bad and fuzzy?

You'll have to sail close enuff to shore to find out.
I can't run the Game on my system so I have no way to check.

More important than that...Do the trees Float?

If not, then they must be witches!:o

That image still appears to be standing quite off from the Bismark.
Put them side by side in Game to define.
All else is pure speculation.

Lest they be Witches.
:hmmm:
Then We must cleanse them!
