You mean this sticky (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=163447)?

Or you can use my instructions which are more basic:

Most of us learned by reading many threads.
Then we started PM'ing the names we saw
doing things in areas that interested us.

You'd be amazed at how many Modders will teach you if you PM them.

I learned by using mods.

There was always some mod that had things i liked and things i didn't like. My first step was removing the things i didn't like.

Later on, i found there were two mods i liked, but were incompatible. My next step was merging them. By doing those things, i figured out by way of example, how some things were done, and beginnings of understanding how various files were related.

My next step was through the course of playing my home brew combination of mods, i found more things i didn't like, and set out changing them from scratch, with the knowledge foundation of having merged mods.. The rest of my involvement in modding exploded from there.

For the longest time i didn't consider myself a modder, but simply an advanced user. Truthfully, i still don't consider myself much different from an advanced user, albiet a bit more jaded then before. :rotfl2:

heres a link to a tutorial I did a few weeks ago http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=165968

I'm just starting out recently and am already creating a replacement Interface Mod (About 90% finished) so a lot can be achived in a short time (Even though it will have you pulling out your hair in no time).
Also check out the SH4/3 Tutorials on the Menu 1024.ini and stuff on the dials.cfg there still applicable.
I've been going thru a lot of the thread gathering information on modding from alot of sources.
Even have some German and Spanish stuff converted in Google - Still quite helpfull. (I can pull this all togeter and post if Interested - I dont have the Original authors names to Credit though, as I've copied and pasted into Word ).

Best of Luck in your new venture.

Welcome aboard Demonsss,

First you should find out what you are willing to mod accordingly to skills you've got.

Personnaly I don't have any major skill, but basic secondary skills that make me good at tweaking, but I don't think I will be able to do a great complex mod without any help.

By the way I play the Silent Hunter franchise since the first one, and I only started to mod the last month with the release of SH5 !
This began when I played the second mission in the first campaign when :
"What's the ... where is the depth under keel commands ? Huh ? And how do I order to return to the planned course ?? Grrrrr"

So instead of telling my navigator officer :
"Hey guy if you have nothing to do ... please do it anywhere else that on MY uboat !"

I started seeking in those script files and ended up to understand how the thing goes. And I added those missing commands by dialog to my navigator, so he won his place in my rig.
And then was born my first mod : the MCCD mod.

So again welcome and good luck in your creation, more heads and fingers will always be helpfull if we are willing to see a strong and talented team to make a GWX5 thingy ^^

Tired of working on mods. broken game features, and armchair mod critics ignorant of design decisions. Gives me a sandy mangina. :O:

I had to look that one up.

I'll not argue with your statement in any way nor form!

But you know that the Wife will beat me when I try to use
this as an excuse to not mow the lawn don't you?

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rock:

I got started by looking at something I wanted to change and then just dove into the files. Not to change them but to look at them and see how everything works together. Then I looked at sh3/4 mods to see how they achieved something similar to what I wanted and made the changes I wanted.. then comes the testing phase!

I'm almost mad at myself that I started modding. If sh5 had a counter on how many times I've booted it up i'd be close to 500+ by now. Sometimes modding is so damn frustrating and I have to make small incremental changes until I find out exactly what's causing it to not work how the files are set, and after each small change I have to boot up sh5 and either start a new campaign because loading a saved game doesn't work with some changes, or load up a mission i've made for the testing.

If I'd had a good enough computer when sh3 and sh4 came out for me to mod then I probably would have with those 2 also. All in all I'm having fun finding out how the game ticks but there's many things that are hardcoded or can't be changed and just makes me want to :damn:

:hmmm: That could prove to be problematic. Might i suggest doing some landscaping with copious amounts of lava rock or shore gravel? Problem solved, less lawn! :yeah:

I don't even play the Games.
For me it's all about the Modding.
I enjoy the changes,
the missed bits and pieces by the Devs,
the what if's and on and on!

I want to know as much as possible,
how and what the Devs did.

How are units structured before importing to the Game.
How does everything connect?

Then I can do stupid stuff!
If I know how it works?
I can find a way to create things not in Game yet.
This version is a Modders delite!

I know exactly what you mean. In the last 2 weeks I don't think I've played a single patrol but sh5 has been the only game i've booted up in that time :har:

It's been fun figuring out how things work.. brainstorming with fellow modders on why some things wont work.. and just piddling about getting the game to do things that sh3/4/stock 5 aren't able to do.

On that note I made good strides on torp carrying planes.. not perfect and may never be .. but might be worth adding.

Demonsss : basically no one can show you how to mod. We can give you tutorials about how certain things work. But you need to take the sub by the horns (see what I did there?) and go through the files. Both the stock files (I recommend a backup) and what is changed from a mod. that's what I did.

You take the base line .. you look at whats different .. you already know the result from the change and this gives you info on how the files work. Then you decide on what you want to do. You ask yourself .. is there anything similar?? if there is you look at what they did .. and you experiment .. and test and ETC ETC .. until your sick in the face and you have a mod.

Yup, pretty much. And as stated earlier in the thread, be prepared to be exiting the game, and restarting it, ALOT. Modding often involves, repetition and tedium when trying to lock down some setting for a desired effect.

Also, be prepared to have an idea on something, chew on, hash it out for a week or three, only to see your idea fall flat on its face and abandon it.

Start small, why not do a little crush depth mod? Accurately change some of the crush depths of the subs ;] I do know the VII/40 is way off....
