Just wondering...

I started a new Campain with the GFX3 mod and my deck gun has no ammo???

btw this is on a new install, Is there a mod that does this????
I just want some ammo for my deck gun

manning your deck-gun and clicking onto the HE-shells usually loads them.
other solutions I don't know. :hmmm:

Note: you should only have to do this once at the start of each patrol.
After that, the crew should keep it loaded. :DL

Also my Flak gun was loaded didnt have to do it then either??

GWX removes the armour piercing and starshells from the deck gun, replacing them with a larger store of hi ex.
The game defaults to loading AP first, but it can't, because it's got none, which is why the deck gun is empty at the start of a patrol.

I think the flak guns carry a load of AP shells, which is why the game loads them for you at the start.

For more info on this, consult page 69 of the latest GWX manual.

NB: The deck gun is not automatically loaded with ammunition. Stock Silent Hunter III has hardcoded the deck gun crew to load armor piercing (AP) ammunition; however, GWX has eliminated all armor-piercing and star shell ammunition since U-boats did not carry these ammunition types historically. You (the player) therefore must tell the deck gun crew what kind to use since there is no AP ammunition. You have two options to load the deck gun.
1. Order the watch officer to operate the gun, and then use the watch officer icon to order the deck gun to open fire.
2. Left click on the ―High Explosive Shell‖ whenever you are in the deck gun view, as shown in Figure 50, and your gun will be loaded at all times for the rest of your mission or patrol unless you run out of ammunition.

Is there any way to put AP ammo back in the game so that the crew will still start loading the gun automatically when you order them to man it and open fire? I'd only add one round, honest!

Looks like there is.
It's an edit of the basic cfg.

About three quarters of the way down, there is a block that'll look like this

[AMMO_TYPE1];8.8cm SK C/35
Idx=1
Year=1939
Month=1
;AP=40
;HE=160
;SS=40
AP=0
HE=220
SS=0
Renown=0


I would say change AP=0 to AP=1.
Can it be that easy?

DISCLAIMER: I haven't actually tried this Frau, but it makes sense to me :DL

I'm mid-patrol now but I'll have a looksee at the files when I'm back at base. I've already edited the basic.cfg I'm using to get the additional ammo from the GWX mod for same, so I'll have to make sure I figure that into the mix as well.

Tried it - my basic.cfg is edited for GWX Additional Ammo, so the "Ammo Type" settings for the deck guns looked like this:

Idx=1
Year=1939
Month=1
;AP=40
;HE=160
;SS=40
AP=0
HE=250
SS=0
Renown=0

I changed the AP from 0 to 1, and the HE from 250 to 249 (since the max rounds allowed is set at 250 further down in the file).

When I went out on my current patrol I checked in the weapons management screen and it shows that we have 1 AP shell and 249 HE on board for a total of 250.

Haven't had occasion to use the gun yet, so I don't know if it will "fix" the auto-loading when manned issue, but I think the chances are good if the only thing causing it was the absence of AP ammo.

I figure it's not "cheating" since they almost never hit anything with the first shot anyway. :O:

Further up the CFG you'll find a section making reference to:

[SUBMARINE_AMMOLIMITS1] ;105mm
MaxAmmoPerSlot=250

The above example is for the 105mm....simply change the number (within reason) and you can up the numbers of each.

Actually once I saw that all the Add'l Ammo mod did was change a couple numbers in the basic.cfg, I kinda figured I could change them again to give myself even more... but I've only run out of deck gun ammo once, and that was one patrol where I ran into several lone merchants on the way home and decided to see if I could sink 'em with what I still had left. Ended up finishing the last couple off with the flak gun and never did run out of ammo for that. So 250/3000 seems plenty.
