Getting ready to start my first combat patrol of a new career and Commander informs me that my Obersteuermann has been killed in a bar fight.

:o

I guess I picked the wrong day to give up quaaludes. :O:

*sniff*

He was just an Oberfähnrich! He should've been in his bunk writing a letter home to his Mutti, not out engaging in drunken fisticuffs.

I keep telling the lads, if anybody makes fun of you again for having a woman kommandant, just smile mysteriously and give them a wink and a somewhat suggestive eyebrow-waggle and WALK AWAY.

Then point them out to me later and I'll open a can of Lady Kaleun Fu on their sorry butts.

OTOH I guess it's a good thing I played that first patrol at 100% realism, cuz now I'm gonna have to spend some renown to get me another navigator.

Who knows, this could be a good omen. Perhaps he was fated to die that day, had you gone out earlyer then he would have to have died on your boat and that could cause any number of issues most unplesant.

Yes, realistic crew transfers.

Usually it's somebody transfering out to another boat, and someone transfering in fresh from training.

But I have also had crewmen who were arrested by local police for public drunkenness, injured in an auto accident, went on leave and never came back... and now killed in a bar fight.

It makes it interesting, especially after I've printed out my crew list at the finish of one patrol, given out whatever awards and quals were earned, and assured myself that I am satisfied with how things stand as we "prepare" to go out again.

And then I hit the "launch SH3" button and *POPUP!* find out my Chief Engineer went AWOL. :O:

Basically, you can use any pictures, but 100x150 size is the best... to replace it with another, double-click on the picture, it will open the browse window... choose your pic... if you want to use another one, out of the selection, you must make sure that you put the picture into the following folder X:\Program Files\SH3 Commander\Images\

Old enough to know better, still too young to resist. ;)

In all seriousness I would have been 46 come September, however since "Operation Merlin" went into effect in 2004 I have in fact been aging backwards and was expecting to turn 32 (again) this year.

Sadly, joining this forum has had some unintended and unforeseen effects on my plan, accelerating the process beyond my control. My current estimates indicate that I am now rapidly approaching 8 years of age.

It's possible I could arrest or even reverse this development if I stayed out of the Caption This Photo and Awesome Jokes threads, but where's the fun in that?

Be happy that you're 8 again. You can go to school with not much to worry about. You've got regular vacation, someone else does all the paying and not to speak about having to do all the homework. All you have to do is cleaning the mess in your room a bit every fortnight...

Well I am on my second (first combat) patrol now and I really really REALLY like it! Mainly because I decided to use Commander to fool the game into thinking that my current realism options actually do add up to 100%.

:haha:  :rotfl2:

Basically I finally decided that, after several weeks of not really "playing" because I was just trying to work the kinks out of all the mod combinations I was looking at, what's fun for me right now is to go out, sink ships, live to tell the tale, and get amply rewarded for it. So for the time being whatever options I choose are going to be 100% realism for me.

When that gets too easy I'll ratchet the difficulty level up a notch or two.

(At least you have to drive yourself home now. That in itself is quite an addition.)

I confess I came very close to putting a value of 1 on one of the options I wouldn't select now anyway, thus keeping my realism to 99%, so I would still have the option to teleport home. :O:

But when I started using limited fuel the point of that was to make it so I would have to take into account the journey home when I was looking at fuel consumption and reserves, which I have done a good job of so far - the only reason I ever teleported after that was if I was just loading a patrol to test a mod out and then needed to exit again so I could make some changes, or maybe because I was very close to home anyway but didn't want to plod slowly through the harbor as constant ship/plane sightings dropped me to 8 TC over and over again.

Now If don't feel like dealing with the harbor traffic I use Commander to start and end at sea, so that's not really an issue. And if I'm testing mods I don't get fair enough away from my start point that teleporting is even necessary to re-dock.

Plus I like keeping patrol logs and it wouldn't look right if it showed a ship sunk in grid AM52 one day and then "returned: Wilhelmshaven" the next.

(I should add that the first patrol, I did actually play at "real" 100% realism. Since there was no hunting or being hunted, it wasn't really much of a difference, except I kept hitting the key for ShipCam and then grumbling because I didn't have one!)

I edited mine in the actual game files. I stick with 99% because, like, what if I lose my rudder, man?

One of the options I leave on is Weapons Officer Assistance. Between 'Manual Targeting' and the Assisted Plotting mod it feels real without being too hard. I make up for it by taking many sightings, so there is a chance they'll spot my scopie.

You're braver than me. All sightings drop my TC to 1.
Same here. I cruise out of the harbor in real time. For the Kiel Canal I use the mod that makes them see it once and shut up.

I don't see anything for that in the GWX main.cfg. Wasn't an option for it in Commander either, which is why I was wondering how anyone got it to drop for non-enemy ships.
