View Full Version : Ship sunk by ramming.

I encountered a small merchant and shelled it with the last of my deck gun ammo. It listed to port and was on its side at almost 90 degree angle. I waited a while, but it wouldn't sink.

Radioing BdU about the situation, was told to "be more aggressive!" Shrugging my shoulders and not wanting to waste a torpedo on an almost destroyed ship, I decided to ram it from its starboard side. After hitting it, and with my bow on top of the ship, I got the "enemy unit destroyed" message and it slowly sank.

It seems too coincidental to be that the ship sank on its own. Later that patrol, I disabled a C3 with my last torp, and its rear end was almost underwater. Try as I might, I wasn't able to sink it even with my u-boat on top of it. I had to abandon that one.

"Be more aggressive!" lol :arrgh!:

I salute your aggressiveness! :arrgh!:
I have always wondered if ramming a crippled ship worked in SH3 :hmmm:

Not only will it sink crippled ships, but you can take out destroyers that way, at least you could in stock SHIII.

More than once I hit a destroyer with my conning tower and it blew it sky-high, and I survived. Probably pretty unrealistic. If you rip the bottom out of a ship with your conning tower odds are it would have ripped the conning tower off of the sub, flooding it.

I too sank a few ships by ramming them. But usually this will not work.

Too risky for me i'm afraid, but nice tactic if it works as well as you say it does. There were parts in Iron Coffins where ramming was mentioned, but it was generally suicidal to do so :o:dead:

Ramming damage is rather unpredictable... I must have split destroyers from bow to stern with my periscope accidentally: I didn't even lose the scope and the destroyer sank a lot faster than it would have after a torpedo hit.

I tend to stick to ramming sailing boats, anything above 100T tonnes is going to do some damage to you.

I have rammed a southampton cruiser before but i was commanding the Bismark, wouldnt try it in anything smaller:) It had appeared out of the mist and I decided what the hell.

What mod let you command the bismark, that sounds fun:D

Once I rammed a small fishing vessel, it sank but I didn't get the sinking credit. Can't remember what setup I had of SH3.

The same thing happened to me. I had to remember to fire a round or two from the AA gun into a fishing boat before ramming it (apparently, only weapons damage generates a kill credit). If the seas were too rough to man the guns I had to watch it sail away...

Those Flak guns tear small ships up pretty good, I use to shoot PT boats down all the time when I use to take the English channel. Now I avoid that mess after battling three destroyers (which I sunk)

The twin 37mm is the most destructive flak you can have.

Not to sure which one that was, I've been stuck with that pea-shooter 20mm for the last seven patrols. When I used a Type IX I had an automatic 37mm, that one was my favorite. (Afew hundred would sink average merchants)
