View Full Version : [REQ] Adding the type II and IX

Hi all modders

Its been one of the paint points of the game....so I say to you that we can get these subs in the game.

How?

We need somebody to do the exterior 3D models...thats the hardest part as we can get the 3D models converted to work with game.
The interior is probably a big piece of work, but maybe the VII interior will OK for now?

Comments?

The type IX wasnt all that different from the type VII.
The former had more length, mass, slightly extended range and an extra rear torp-tube. Other than that they didnt really stand out. Visually they didnt have the "saddle-tanks" of the type VII so it had a sleeker appearence.
The Type IX were also less manouverable and took longer to dive as compared to the type VII.
In short, is it worth the trouble of making a new sub for SH5?

As for the type II: It was a boat designed not to stray too far from the coast. If the Type II were to be introduced into SH5 then new short-range missions would have to be made.

Those or just my 2 cents though.

Absolutely worth it, as the range was not just a bit extended, depending on Version it even put the fleet boats to shame. Added to that comes a much larger torpedo count. All in all I much preferred the IX over the VII in SH3, it's a real pity that boat is not included here, imho.

Yea i like the type 9 as well, its more of a big navy boat and less of a steel tube of death. :) Did they have a wider deck as well?

Type 9 is the best convoy killer, bar none.

the main problem is, that at this time no one can import any type of 3d models to the GR2 files.:hmmm:

in my american version of the game I have a type IIA folder with everything but a .dat and 3d files. it even has a .sim and a .zon.

in the NSS_Uboat2a.cfg it is even listed as human playable. :o

Yup its in there...

Guess the devs were working on it, but didnt have time/budget to complete it, so they left it in there for us to continue on ;)

Yes!!! Let's bring back the Type IX, my personal favorite of all the uboats, imo it seems to be the best and most versatile sub they had.

Seriously i would only really see this happen and done right if the devs deside to release an addon.

In the texture directory there's uboat9d2 textures .. and uboat 18 textures .. I dont know if their leftover from sh3 or new .. but worth a look.

From SH4 IIRC
The US fleet boat textures are all in there too

We have a KILLER Type 9 ref built for the now defunct GWX 4.
I've completed part of the conversion to SH5.

I'm hopeing he will respond to an E-mail I sent.

there is another thread of an E-boat conversion. how will that be added as playable? hes putting awesome work into that with stunning results; wont he have the same issues as trying to make a playable Type 9?

[yes, clearly i have zero knowledge of this black magic you call "programming"]:hmmm:

And there is already a Type II Torpedo room and Engine room of better than SH5 quality already modeled, they were seperatley started for SH 4 but will probably make it into SH 5 someday, especially given that there is an already a Type II exterior model, just need Control Room and conning.

It's all on the way!
You can count on that!
All the work done in past sims, and more, will make it into SH5!
Now if we could just fly the aircraft...............

Will we beable to switch in between models, when I finnaly make it to the Med. I do not want to be stuck in a type IX. That would be suicide. But nor do I want a type II when doing Drumbeat.

I'm sure it will be all figured out by that time anyway.
This is truely great news. Can not wait for this and more ships to be imported.

Was there ever a WIP Thread or a thread with some pics of this? I remember checking back at some point to see GWX4 was not going to happen, but never saw any threads or pics of the Type IX.

I'll see about some screen shots of it.
It's a very nice model!

@McBeck

The dat's are nearly completed as far as converting to SH5.
If we can use it,
The type VII interior stuff could be used as a placeholder till
a proper interior is built.

Hope to see more work from you soon!

Ref has not visited SubSim in quite sometime.
I've not received any return E-Mails or PM's from him.
No one has that I'm aware of.

I only hope he is doing fine and just grew tired of Sub Simming stuff.
I sure do miss his fantastic work in many areas of the SH series.

BBW has put the IIA in Game as an AI U-Boat.
The scopes need lowered yet.
:yep:

I'd say it could be made playable with a bit of work.

The IXC needs alot of work to get it up to standard for SH5.
Export of all parts from the dats,
Finish work on some parts,
Re-scaleing,
Placement of parts and helpers in 3D Max,
etc.

Then it would be ready for import and whatever work needs done for
interiors, crew, etc.

Some of the stuff needing done is out of my area.
Like UPCGE

I don't think the interior and exterior are completely separate as they were in SH3. I had a camera problem where my camera came "unattached" while I was in the command room. I floated through the sleeping quarters, galley, motor room, elec room and out the back of the boat! Watched it sail away as I hung there in the water. In SH3 when you went "out of bounds" it was just black space. In SH5 it seems it's "real"?

What 'sectors' is the camera out of exactly? Maybe we are being given a glimpse at another dimension :o

The Hull part of the Subs are one GR2 file,
The rooms are in seperate GR2 files located in the Common\Rooms folder.

Those are all linked through the eqp file and the UPCGE file and such.
(I'm not a UPCGE guy so correct me if I'm wrong here.)

So it's possible to link the type VII stuff to a new type IX hull.

SH3 did not have seperate rooms so the Cam stuff works differently.
That's also an older Engine.
Not a good comparison in this situation.

maybe the "clone stuff" works for this idea? clone the code structure and change afterwarsd the 3d data...

Im looking for that too.. also every other Sub in Sh3.

To model the exteriors is easy.. the interiors are the hardest part.. but they arent important gameplay wise ,i dont mind using the same VII interiors for every other sub . .Adding more 3d Subs models with higher quality textures and their extra capabilities will really take the game to a new level.

Models from previous versions wil need a retexturization though since the new engine can support more "wood" into it.

The Type II model is in the program.
You still need to make it playable, add interior and script it so it doesn't have you patrol 5,000 miles away

Personally I think the XXI based off of the XVIII would be awesome. As with the IX-D2, the XVIII/XXI is also in the SH4 u-boat expansion and could be copied over with the aforementioned retexturing.

On a related note, does anyone know if schnorkels can be implemented?
