View Full Version : Using SH3 Commander with multiple installs

Hi all -

I'm having a bit of a problem.

I currently have two installs of SH3, one stock 1.4 and one with GWX3.

I've been using Commander successfully with the GWX3 install.

I would like to have another GWX install that I can leave completely clean (no file edits or additional mods) and perhaps a third GWX3 just to test out new mods in. I'd also like to use Commander for all these installs (including the stock one in case I want to run it for some reason).

I have MultiSH3 and have already used it to set up separate My Docs folders for the existing game installs.

I found the following info from Jimbuna in an old post, explaining how to use Commander to run multiple installs:

SH3 Commander & Multiple Installs

It is recommended to have a separate install of Commander for each different install of SH3.
1)Install SH3Commander and rename the program folder to suit.
2)Rename each SH3Cmdr shortcut as required.
3)You will need to use the l: switch to point SH3Cmdr to the right installation.

Here's an example of the l: switch for dual installs, just tailor it to fit.....

Right click on the SH3Cmdr shortcut & choose properties.

Target
"C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander-GWX\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l:"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent HunterIII-GWX"

Start in
"C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander-GWX"

This matches the info in the documentation for MultiSH3. My problem is, I can't seem to get the /l switch to work. I've done a separate install of Commander for each game install, added the GWX config files for the ones I want to use with GWX, and set up shortcuts from each .exe file. I've edited the shortcuts' properties as indicated. But whenever I open Commander from a new shortcut and try to launch the game with it, it launches the same install of the game every time instead of the different install I'm trying to point it to with the /l switch.

Since my last career ended I've really only been testing out different mods, not starting a new "official" career to play through... so I even deleted all my existing "test" careers, uninstalled Commander completely (all installs), and did a couple of fresh installs of it. The first one I edited to launch the stock game install, which it does with no problem. On the second Commander install, I installed the GWX config files, made a shortcut on the desktop to the SH3Cmdr.exe file in that install's folder, opened the shortcut's properties and used the /l switch to point it to the GWX game install. But when I double-click on that shortcut, it opens the stock install instead.

What am I doing wrong here?

"C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander-GWX\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l: C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Silent HunterIII-GWX\

Note there are no " marks after /l:

Here's my short cut

"C:\Program Files\SH3 Commander\SH3Cmdr.exe" /l: C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunter_GWX\

Relying on old posts instead of the SH3Cmdr User Guide. ;)

Jimbuna's instructions are for pre-R3.x releases. For SH3Cmdr R3.x, checkout page 5 of the SH3Cmdr User Guide.

The /l switch is no longer recognised.

:damn:

I looked through the UG last night when I started having problems but I was probably expecting something about "/l" to catch my eye, lol. Which of course it didn't, now I know why.

Thanks, will give it a go again when I get home. :salute:

Looks like the perils/pitfalls of software advancement/improvements Jaesen :DL

I must admit to maintaining one separate installation for each game installation.
