Hi guys!
This is my attempt to get real funnel smoke and to improve the stock funnel smoke, which hardly exists.
So far I created 6 type of funnel smokes.

Looks nice! Any noticeable frame rate hit? I know fire can bring mine to a crawl, but smoke seems OK.

Funnel smoke has been a major issue i think, i know AOTD addressed it in their mod, realism is a good thing, been able to spot funnel smoke from just over the horizon would make this even better and realistic of course, thanks Hans, look forward to your release.

Added 2 more versions.. 1. funnel smoke of old coal warships 2. funnel smoke of coastal vessels (wrong ship showing because of missing one in stock game) Improved coal burning smoke!

All I know... small/wide chimneys have diesel engines... tall/narrow chimneys have coal burning engines.
Just as an FYI... the Clemson and Wickes class DDs were oil fired, not coal.

What changed in SH5 over SH4 that allowed diesel/coal smoke differentiation? I remember back in SH4 that it was "one size fits all."

That does not make much sense in my mind... vessels had different engine propulsions and did have different smoke types.
A big warship does not make that much smoke like coal burning merchants for example because of detection awareness.

Yes. Only very old warships were coal burning.
There was a smoke surveillance in convoys . Bad coal make very much smoke than good.
Looks perfect for me.

Not even those. Most navies had converted their warships to burn oil by the middle of World War 1, and the British and Americans had converted their oldest ships to oil by 1930. In 1939 there were no coal-fired ships in the major navies.

Right, that's why SH3/SH4 sucked. You couldn't make the funnel smoke differ by a great deal between very old freighters and brand new cruisers. I was wondering what changed that such a thing is now possible with SH5.

Actually nothing :D That was also possible with SH3/4.
I also did this type of funnel smoke mod for stock SH3 and WAC.

Thank you so much or doing this, SH5 desperately needs better smoke. However, I have a horrible feeling that the devs left it as it is in stock because of the bug that resets the smoke emitters and crew animations whenever the water droplets appear on screen. Have you noticed this?

Welcome, stock funnel smoke is almost as bad as in SH4... about the particle reset.
Yeah, I noticed this, but I get this problem only sometimes when dropping time compression. For me it rarely appears.. so no thing for me.
Maybe this issue is caused from slow harddive performance or fragmented drives!?

Yeah, sure. The enhanced funnel smokes do not affect possible exhaust smoke from subs.

You can test it in your mission editor... there are wind/ship direction and speed. Use perpendicularly and you will see.

I have tried downloading from filefront and also get error 404 - file not found. Tried in Safari, Firefox and IE. Same result. Could you please re-post the file to another provider? Megadownload, mediafire, etc.
Filefront has really had some issues the past few days. To help everyone I've uploaded HanSolo's improved smoke to MU. If it's an issue please let me know and I'll remove it at once. :03:

Not all the old four pipers were oil fired, i saw a post saying they were oil fired. not so. my Grandfather (class of 1914 US Annapolis) was skipper of one and it was coaled..and very ardously....hard work for all hands including the skipper.

I just barely saw this. My statement was that all American warships were converted to oil by World War 2, and I stand by it. I would like to know which ship it was, so I can do proper research.

It feels right for me the way it is, but i use with Sobers Fog and settings where you cant make visual over ~8km.
Taller smoke from burning wrecks would be cool though.

when i have that problem i just click on the link that says if your download doesnt start click here...That way it downloads it automaticlly and doesnt wait....
Most times its your browser stopping it from downloading.
In the museum the smoke dont work it goes the wrong way im trying to take screenshots of the ships can you fix it.:o

Maybe its the "wind dependent smoke" from version 1.2 that is making you a headache?
Try version 1.0 ;)

The new version 1.2 has a weird effect when it first comes out of the stack, its already going in the direction of the wind. I think with a ship moving the smoke needs to go stern at the bottom at first then as it extends out go in the direction of the wind.
I notice as the wind blows the smoke to the bow or at 90 degree it looks strange. In the museum its noticeable because I think the wind in there is blowing the smoke to the bow. Just notice how it is already going forward, like a strong wind is blowing it, even though the ship is moving.
I love the enhanced funnel smoke, I am using 1.0 right now. I will wait till next version with the wind fix to get the updated version.

I've been interested in ships for years, especially old North Atalantic Steamers. I've studied loads of photographs, and written articles, and even made 3D models for games.
I can tell you that in most of the photographs I have studied, when the smoke comes out the funnel, the wind catches it directly and blows it downwind in a direction derived from the wind component generated by the weather and the wind compenent generated by the foward speed of the ship. Rarely does it blow towards the stern.
In the 1860s there was a breed of ship that used both sail and propellors, and on the those the smoke nearly always as blowing over the bow - albeit slight to one side.
Han has it right.
