Icebergs v2.3
It's alive!!
TheDarkWraith's sterling work has allowed this Mod to live again. It's a work in progress, needs testing and feedback. That's where you come in dear Community
Icebergs have been added to the Campaign in appropriate parts of the ocean during the appropriate times of year. Included in the Mod are also corrections made to a couple of small mistakes made by the Devs (Waypoint loops not being set for some Port Traffic).
PLEASE NOTE: This Mod does work on its own, but for best results should be installed over TheDarkWraith's Magnum Opus until such time that he's ready to incorporate it. Obviously a Campaign restart is required for changes to take effect.

First off, watch this:

Pretty cool huh? Since seeing this video, I have always wanted to play Cat & Mouse with a Destroyer amongst Icebergs. In the 'Sea' folder for SH5 there are 5 items dedicated to Icebergs. Does anybody know if they are implemented in the Campaign? Is it possible have them spawn randomly above a certain Latitude i.e. in the Artic Circle? What about a Mod that creates Pack-Ice (possibly using the Terrain Generator)? :hmmm:
How cool would it be to finally go under the icepack, avoiding pressure-ridges and maybe even breaking through and surfacing where possible? :DL
Not seen any Icebergs in the campaign files but not looked at them all
In SH3 they never moved despite being supposed to till IIRC Rubini sorted that
Tis a fairly simple job to put them in
IF they work
Mines dont work in the ME but are in the files
Subnets dont either

There are 5 different types of Icebergs in the 'Sea' folder, is it a case of moving them to the 'Roster' folder and then adding them to the Campaign with the Mission Editor or something? It should be clear that I have no idea what I'm talking about:oops: If you could give me a few pointers, I'd be happy and try to do this myself :o.

That SH3 video was awesome, watched it before the release and got completely hooked on :arrgh!:
Here's a SH5 single mission I quickly made up, very similar to the situation in the video. But for some reason, after about 30 seconds of game play, the external camera goes haywire, "out of sectors", the screen goes blue but the action continues in the background :hmmm:
See if you can get it to play properly.
Drop into data\SingleMissions:

The icebergs are in there, no need to add anything to the roster.
Haven't checked the campaign files, don't know if they're scripted in or not..
Could be added through the ME if needed..

This'll be the first time I've seen Icebergs in SH4 or 5 and they look spectacular!!
Edit: It crashed for me too after 30 secs. What I did see looked fantastic! I didn't get the chance to dive underneath them and se what they look like under water. I had the presence of mind to take this one screenshot:

Just answered your message General
Indeed are already in the roster folder under enviromental
Doubt your crew will spot them as ignore anything not at war - as SH4 did which is seriously wrong as now you know anything your crew spots is the enemy
Takes away half the fun
Anywho
Cant find any icebergs on the campaign but doesnt mean they arent there
Just that I dont see them

I PM'ed Pintea (Our resident Guardian Angel here in MOD World it seems :03:) with the question above and here was his reply:
Hello,
It IS possible, by using the icebergs that are already in-game (or new ones for that matter, if you want other shapes, like the pack-ice you mentioned).
Icerbergs are treated in game just like ships :) , so you can make icebergs move by waypoints, randomly generate (by random grp generator) or any other behaviour that ships have.
From the editor, you can find them in Sea/Roster/Environmental, just set the veterancy level to POOR, or otherwise they will engage you :)
You can also edit the terrain, but it won't move ...

Made a mission in sh5 with several icebergs in it, the crew did spot em and they showed up on the map, but my pc ctd when i went to look at em, my first ctd in sh5, i had 5 icebergs in a small cluster, so guess it was too much, one or two works fine though. Ps you can give em course and speed or have em just sit there.

I have successfully got about 30 Icebergs in the Campaign, but you'll have to restart the Campaign to see them. I was gonna wait until the release of Patch 1.2 before I Posted any Mod, because I have a feeling most people would restart a Campaign then anyway.

If the devs have altered the traffic on ports - crashing into harbours etc - then ppl will have to start a new career to make use of those changes.
Makes sense to release your mod then :yeah:

Makes sense to release your mod then :yeah:I hope you're right. I wouldn't want The Devs holding back on any improvements because they're worried about asking people to restart a Campaign. The Devs may feel that asking us to do that is kinda like admitting they made a mistake and they haven't exactly been keen to do in the past :hmmm:
By the way, I set the Icebergs as High Priority Contacts. I assumed that this would force a drop out of T.C. when the Watch-Crew detected them, so as to avoid ploughing into one Titanic style. Hasn't worked so far. Still testing...
bigboywooly

Also keep in mind that the campaign files themselves are changing, so adding icebergs to the current campaign files will just need to be redone all over again since the files will be changing.
Unless you're keeping them all as a separate layer mission you can just drop in, than you're golden. :)

Thats because you are probably travelling in "Travel mode" .Yeah, this is probably correct. Neal posted a video of DD's going straight through the land. Problem with the 'Travel Mode' feature maybe? When I set-up a lone Iceberg to travel on a Southerly course at 0.5 knots, it went straight through the appropriately named Iceland :o
As it stands, I have 30+ 'Bergs in the Artic Circle area, that are stationary, but Spawn randomly within a 20 KM radius. There seems little point going to the trouble of setting-up looping Waypoints for each one because, if you encounter one it'd moving too slowly to notice anyway. Instead of Waypoints I am toying with the idea of having the 'Bergs only appear during the Winter months. I can put them in different postions each year, so that it doesn't be come too predictable :DL

Here is one of the problems I'm trying to deal with. Placing a large 'Berg like the one seen below into a shallow area means that it will hover like this for a short while before slowly sinking into position. It's quite cool to see, but kind of an immersion killer ;)
http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/1365/godstooth.png (http://img31.imageshack.us/i/godstooth.png/)
Sunken vessels also sink into the earth after a while, to keep Poly-counts to a minimum I guess. The Devs building-in this feature isn't a bad idea I suppose, but it was kind of cool to have the possiblity of crashing into a sunken wreck when trying to avoid DD's :hmmm:

The thing is that these icebergs mainly appear in the Winter months, in the Northern areas and so the sun hardly rises above the horizon. It means that visibility underwater ain't all that good. Camera going out of sector is a stock issue
Game works ok on a reload but not the point
Maybe thats why they ( devs ) left them out :hmmm:
A minor inconvenience though for having them ingame
Maybe fixable by someone who knows the camera files
Hope the devs sort this, ive had the crash also and the weird camera behaviour when icebergs around.

For me, this MOD greatly adds to the realism emersion. I have even added other environemtal aspects such as Dolphins and Sharks and would love to see Whales and "The Kraken" giant squid as well. 3D Models for Whales and Squid exist. People with 3DS and the know how could import them into the game.
How awesum would it be when on patrol having a giant squid (Almost the size of your Type VII) latch on and attempt to drag you down.

Currently not ruuning this MOD because I havent heard if it is compatible with the 1.2 patch. Not compatible with 1.2, sorry
The Briefings were written before The Devs realised that they wouldn't have time to implement things like Icebergs, Subnets and Mines into the game. I wish I knew how to fix these things. The Iceberg models don't have any collision detection, they just pass right through land and ships, it doesn't make for a very realistic environment and adding them was supposed to be an improvement :-?. There is also a problem with the Camera going 'Out of Sectors', when near an Iceberg. It's things like this that put you off trying. I suspect this is why we have seen a lull in interest from the Modding Community.
You can probably tell I am a bit disgruntled with SH5 at the moment. I keep encountering bugs while playing the Campaign and it's spoiling my enjoyment. I have heard that there will be no more Patches and probably not another Silent Hunter (with this Dev Team anyway). Perhaps it's time to take a break from Subsims for a while? Besides, the sun is shining :sunny:

There is also a problem with the Camera going 'Out of Sectors', when near an Iceberg. It's things like this that put you off trying. I suspect this is why we have seen a lull in interest from the Modding Community.
You can probably tell I am a bit disgruntled with SH5 at the moment. I keep encountering bugs while playing the Campaign and it's spoiling my enjoyment. I have heard that there will be no more Patches and probably not another Silent Hunter (with this Dev Team anyway). Perhaps it's time to take a break from Subsims for a while? Besides, the sun is shining :sunny:
Even though the Icebergs do not have a collision model it is still nice to have the eye candy. I truly hope that you reconsider your position and bring this mod in line with the games current revision level.:timeout:
Every time I head into Northern Waters, I now find myself looking for Icebergs fully knowing they are not there. Resulting in me posting this plea.

Adding Icebergs was a really neat idea, I also understand how one can get frustrated in modding when it feels the game design is against you.
If you've hit a brick wall or lost interest can you explain where you are at and what the pain is so that it can be re-visited either by yourself or others?

Obviously Vikinger deserves the credit for 99.9% of the work contained therein :salute:

When you enter the bay leading to Narvik just before entering the river there will be Icebergs. I think that 3 of them are there. Sonar wil display a green target indicator when the Sonarman detects one.

Read Post #1 of this Forum Topic. It points exactly where the Iceberg's are up near Narvik.
THe Iceberg's will remain there during the Total Germany and Acrtic Convoy's Campaigns.

Because SH5 is unfinished and has a few problems I cannot guarantee that you can see the Icebergs, there is a weird 'camera-out-of-sectors' problem for example, also, your watch crew may not always alert you to their presense under TC. I'm sorry it's all very hit & miss, but if The Devs had been given enough time to finish SH5 then things'd be alot easier :03:
I did put them in all the Total Germany and Artic Convoy missions, these are the only missions in the Campaign that occur during the Winter months and take you to areas where you're likely to encouter Icebergs. Happy hunting

EDIT: I just went looking for them and had that 'Camera-out-of-Sectors' thing happen when switching to External view, so I'm pretty sure the Icebergs are there somewhere. If you have this happen save the game and reload and the Iceberg should appear. Sorry it's not more predictable, it's just SH5 is not what you'd call a 'polished product'.

::EDIT:: You may want to check if you are using a old Cameras.dat that hast the problem.

Didnt Ubi release a cameras.dat update in the 1.2 patch?:06:
You may want to check your Cameras.dat to ensure you are not using a old one.

LOL I was blaming recent changes in TDW UI 3.06 mod for the `camera out of sector` all of a sudden starting to appear for me - are you saying this is caused by the iceberg mod ? :haha:
So, whenever I`m close to icberg the camera out of sectors pops up and I should then save and load the mission again and the iceberg will be out there ?

If changing Campaign,:ping:
What about adding Hump Back Whale, Dolphin and Haifs(Shark)?:06:
I did some enhanced sound mods for the Whale and Dolphin for SH4. I also added actual Humpback Whale Whale-Song and actual Dolphin sonar and squeak sounds.
You can hear the whale-song inside your boat if the whale is less then 6,000 meters away.
You can hear the doplhin sonar clicking if the dolphin is less then 1,000 meters away.
Both can be tracked on Sonar but Sonarman does not report them as contacts.
The same can be done for the Iceberg sound as well. The cracking of ice is very loud underwater. that and a wave splash would make for good effect.

Love the new release of Icebergs!
I did notice one issue. The Icebergs are no longer reported by the Deck Watch and do not display on Navigation Chart when clearly within visual range.
In your original release the Icebergs were displayed on Navigation Chart and reported/tracked by Sonarman. Did something change in the Iceberg CFG or NAMES.CFG that is preventing this now?
