View Full Version : [REL] Window_Lights_Redone_V1
WINDOW LIGHTS REDONE V1
-----------------------
Redone color balance and exposure levels of window night lighting textures in game. I hated vanilla night windows, they were too orange and too bright, making some docks look like the vegas Strip.
This version makes them more subtle, and as a bonus of lowering the intensity of the glows textures makes distant windows blends better with the night so you don't see them so far off which is more realistic. It only gets brighter as you move closer.
P/S: I kept the vanila system of industrial lighting being brighter than resedential lighting. Everything is dimmer overall but the difference between those two types is still quite noticeable. Let me know if anyone wants a completely balanced version.
INSTRUCTIONS:
-----------------------
JSGME compat. Just extract in your JSGME mod folder and use that app to install. Otherwise just extract zipped data folder into your SH5 data folder.

Looks better ingame without this gamma and compression crud.

Original Release. Due to an unfortunate error on my part, actual mod looks a bit different than that screenshot up there.

Incase of JSMGE mess up and you lose vanilla file without another backup present. These will revert windows lights to normal. JSMGE enabled also.

Mod looks great! I'm going to use this.
But not to be a stickler, and not directed at your mod at all, but shouldn't ports be blacked out in wartime?

brilliant! I always thought the vanilla window lights were too orange and too homogenised.
Thanks!

Always thought the lights were really orange and obtrusive, but I didn't realize how much I disliked them until I saw this.
Downloading now:yeah:.
EDIT: Think you placed readme.txt in the wrong spot, though, it comes into conflict with another readme file. You're meant to put the readme, and whatever graphics you may want the player to look at, in a sub-folder named "Documentation". Then players can right-click the mod in JSGME and go straight to whatever files are in this folder.

Aye
Lorient looks like a holiday resort all lit up in stock
This will help tone down
Wonder if a totally dark one can be done :hmmm:

Yup, AFAIK, just download the mod and paint all the files black. Should work. :hmmm: Or if you can find the file that tells the game to load the night textures then edit that.

Theres an easier to do this other than painting all them textures black. Just go to your textrures folder and find each of the 76 files and just delete them. Or cut and paste somewere as backup. No lights at all will appear.
Dont worry buildings wont be missing textures during the day. The textures I edited in this mod are just the glow effect.

Glad so many ppl like this small mod.

EDIT: I'll do the "balanced" version soon.

You know, I'm not so sure. I saw a program about illusions used by the allies during the war. One section looked at how they set up a fake 'port' about three miles away from the real one and set up the lighting to look like the real port at night (the made little concrete sections under the lights and filled them with water. They even set fires after the first wave had passed as well, to try and draw off the second wave. So, I'm not sure that docks were blacked out at night. There didn't appear to any procedure for turning the lights off during an air raid either. They interviewed a German pilot and he said he could see the real port's lights and was trying to tell some of the planes that were heading for the decoy to ignore it. He was quite annoyed that they bombed the decoy. In winter, you'd lose a lot of time if you couldn't unload at night - and this was before cargo containers, so did they work by night? Obviously the house and office windows would be blacked out, but the exterior lights may not have been.
Is there any resource to find out about this?

It seems that it varied (atleast early in the war) which ports had lights on and which didn't.
On the KTB of Prien's attack on Scapa he writes something that would indicate the there was blackout in effect:
From 2200 to 2230 the English are kind enough to switch on all the coastal lights so that I can obtain the most exact fix.
But later on, when he is in the bay of Scapa he writes:
It is disgustingly light. The whole bay is lit up.
It is disgustingly light. The whole bay is lit up.
:haha: Maybe the devs read that too. That's exactly what I tought of the original lights in game..... sorry couldn't help it.
Excellent work, subtle difference...looks great!

ya i tried it last night coming into Wilmshaven and the lights are way better like this, more sparse and realistic.
This mod really makes the night time ports and cities look real.
Thanks again!
Ok dudes, first sorry for the delay, something else came up. I know I promised one of you I'd release a "balanced" version (one where industrial lighting and residential lighting are balanced). But I've decided against it.
Reason: I did it and the result isn't all that obvious, so if I released it, folks would just go "eh? what's the difference?" This is because the windows around the docks are larger and clustered so they'll look a litte brighter no matter what. Plus I feel a bit cheap releasing something that is really just a exposure adjustment of a handfull of textures and calling another seperate release.
So that's the scoop.

EDIT:
However I am going to rerelease the entire MOD because I just realised something really stupid on my part. I'm playing SH5 with ENB series D3D9 dlls and my tweaks Includes color saturation reduction among other things. So just now while doing the "balanced" tests I turn off ENB series and lo and behold my actual mod looks nothing like what I thought it did before! IE: That screenshot I posted on my first post :damn::damn::damn:.
So I'm gonna redo the whole thing properly. Will release in a few hours. ARGGGHHHH!

Here's an interesting thread about this very thing on the SH3 boards:

Interesting animated gif showing how the lights in the city would silhouette ships and a really great video of Operation Drumbeat.

I dunno how you do it but in photoshop i hit adjustments/equalise .
Well that's embarassing. Well anyway the "PROPER" version is done. It's up on my first post. Should look better for those that don't use ENB Series tweaks. Sorry for the mixup.
P/S: ENBseries btw is a d3d9 "hijack" dll. It's made by Boris Vorontsov. It basicly makes the game use his d3d9 dll instead of Windows. It simply allows a bunch of post effect stuff to be added to a game externaly by the user. Running it while doing my mod cause this problem.
Final one for the mod. Updated to 1.1 cuz I found alpha issue that caused the Proper version to have windows lighting during the day.
See you guys in my next mod.
Laters,
Az.
Hello AZ, your mod it is more realistic, I like!! thanks, unloading!:sunny:

Thank you very much, this is very good.
Yes some ports were blacked out on both sides and many not as unloading ships being dangerous work some light must be needed. Several famous examples happened early in the US part of the war when Happy Hunting happened on the East seaboard, ships were back lit like in a shooting gallery and U boat kaiptians were very happy about that.
Mod looks great! I'm going to use this.
But not to be a stickler, and not directed at your mod at all, but shouldn't ports be blacked out in wartime?
Ports in Neutral counties were still lit- e.g Spain had no reason to be blacked out.
