View Full Version : [TEC] Auto TDC tutorial - how to hit a target without connecting the dots
It seems that many people here are experiencing problems with auto targeting, so I've decided to write a mini-tutorial on this topic.
1. Here's the target (Liberty Cargo), approximate distance - 5150 m.
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/2119/001yf.png
2. Dive to periscope depth, raise the attack periscope.
http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/3840/002sv.png
3. Lock the target (press Space) and identify it (optional).
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/7128/003ch.png
4. Set the torpedo speed, depth and pistol. Make sure the TDC is OFF.
http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/8642/004w.png
5. Unlock the target (press Space). Notice the trajectory of torpedo changes automatically to intercept the ship. Move periscope crosshair and choose place where you want to hit the target. Fire tube one.
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/3577/005x.png
6. Aim the second torpedo (optional). Fire tube two.
http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/3251/006oo.png
7. Let's see how our torpedoes are traveling through the external camera.
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/9462/007o.png
8. First torpedo impact (ship increased speed and started an evasive maneuver, but it was too late for him).
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/9967/008nr.png
9. Second torpedo impact.
http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/1829/009s.png
10. The ship is sinking.
http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/8076/010w.png
11. It's done! We've managed to hit a ship from a large distance (~5000 m) using automatic targeting, without connecting any dots.
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/6128/011w.png
Enjoy.

Never realised Auto TDC did this. So you unlock from Auto and it auto does the trajectory??? Strange. :o
Nice find though. I wonder is Manual TDC doing the same in the background..
Forgot to mention - in the screenshots above, I switched the second torpedo to medium speed (maximum distance 7.5 km), so it arrived first.
The first torpedo was set to slow speed (maximum distance 12 km).

Works like a charm buddy, Ive been sinking ships from beyong 4000m after learning this! almost too easy
Will try this. I'll just save the dots for close range. Thanks!

Just tried it, works great, thanks a lot.

Tried this and missed does the sub have to be stoppped when the torpedoes are launched?

Not really, but I suspect that some of torpedoman 'special abilities' are making the auto TDC work incorrectly. Try to start a new campaign and do not spend any points on torpedoman abilities.

Is this bug with the torpedoe man abilities known?
Frederf
03-15-10, 06:29 PM
Oh yeah, it's known. Some abilities make torpedoes faster, some slower. All the time the TDC (auto, manual, by-the-numbers) pretend torpedo speed is the original value.

That explains the problem when I started my first game I maxed out my torpedo guy. I didn't realise the 8 promotion points where for all the crew!!!
My torpedoes must be going too fast is there any way to downgrade abilities?

torp + moral fix

longer leveling+ torp fix + moral fix
you can use this if you prefer just removing the torp speed bonus' moral mod compatible load in JSGME after moral mod or use standalone

The torp speeds are definately borked after upgrading abilities. Just used this method to sink four ships at 6 km and didn't miss a single one after installing the mod to reset the speeds.
Now I know it wasn't all my fault.

The mod with Siemens writing is called 'Dials by Briklebritt'.
You can download it here (http://www.filefront.com/15901871/dials_briklebritt.rar/).

Just for my curiosity: is this a bug or it was intended?
Great tutorial anyway! I've always hated the "numbers"...
Awesome!
This tutorial helped me really much!
I'd suggest that you sticky this thread, as i think it will help all newcomers who use Auto TDC!

I had problems with hitting targets too, until I found this thread. However, now that I'm on the mission where I have to sink 5 AMC ships and I have 4 Type II torpedo's loaded, and it doesn't matter what I do they keep missing using this method...
Does this method only work for the Type I torpedo's?
Edit: Nevermind, read on the first page about torpedo speed affected by torpedo officer upgrade. Will try the mod given :)

This tutorial helped me immensely, I went from missing every darn ship to now hitting almost everytime. One merchant got away from me tonight even after hitting him with one torpedo. I ran out of forward torps so I got within about 2k meters and spun the boat around and shot two rear torps at him, one hit, but then he hit the throttle hitting 20 knots, I chased him for over an hour with him on fire but he never went down and my gunners suck azz and missed more than they hit him. LOL
Yesterday I reverted back to SH4 and played just so I could torpedo some ships, then I found this thread and what a difference it made. Thank you very much. :yeah:
There is a mod that that removes the 1 2 3 torpedo alignment. Enjoy no more 1-2-3 circles in the torpedo track.... by Nemesis43.

If you're not using any of TDW's great mods, may I suggest you get this one for the spread angle... F_cherschusswinkel - SalvoSpreadAngle_Obelix_edition You might want to fire multipul torpedos someday. ;) Sorry but I can't find the link right now. Not sure but I think CSP Magui 3.01 now has it included.

Hi Captains, sorry to drag this old thread up from DJ's locker, but has this method slightly changed with the upto date mods etc?
It says "Make sure Auto TDC is off" but when I do this the Torp Solution line defaults back to straight ahead rather that leading the target.
It seems to work just fine leaving Auto TDC on all the time, then just simply Lock and then Break Lock, and the solution auto leads it, place crosshair then shoot.

Hi guys
I made theis pictorial a while back which explains most of the things you need to know.
Post #146 Auto TDC Targeting Without Using 3 Circles > Updated Pictorial (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2248685&postcount=146)
As sson as you lock the target the TDC automatically makes the first calculation.
Unlocking the TDC the TDC recalculates again predicting where the target will be when the torpedoes hit.

Hi olisko
Did you see my Post #28?
It is essential to first open the tube doors with the awitch/es otherwise by the time they open and the torpedo is loose the target will have moved and the torpedoes will always miss.
It is essential to lock the target with the space bar.
Auto TDC automatically puts the torpedo soletion in the middle of the target.
Un-pressing the space bar resets the TDC to where the target should be when the torpedoes reach it.
A further explanation by you would be helpful if these notes are not your problem.

It probably means the thread has been archived or the image host used has removed the images. It would very useful if someone could please re-upload them as using the TDC so that it works is still confusing for new-comers to the game (myself included - only managed to fluke one hit so far in 20 hours of play).
Today I sank 2 destroyers using this guide. But there is such a problem that when the torpedo is already aimed and fired at the target-the destroyer (although it does not see you at a long distance) makes a sharp maneuver with an increase in speed and the torpedo misses. I think that it is most convenient to attack destroyers on opposite courses in fog or quietly hiding under a wave. As for merchant ships, this instruction does not always work correctly and the torpedo does not have enough 2-3 meters to hit the target.

This is just a guide to tactical shooting. It doesn't need any images available...
