A Fistful of Emblems v1.51

Tested with patch 1.2.0

Description
-----------
This mod add 115 emblems to SH5, all selectable in the "upgrade your boat" menu while in the U-boat pen.

I have selected only emblems that have appeared on type VII boats. I have also picked only the most famous emblems and/or emblems that I personally like. Some emblems that were only available in black and white were left as is and some have been colorized.

This version includes the Crew and Flotilla emblems and 21 custom emblems by Gunfighter and an optional mod to install a weathered version of some select emblems.

The emblems that shipped with the game are still available. You can also use your own emblem by copying your DDS texture file to \Data\Textures\TNormal\tex\custom.dds and selecting the last entry in the emblem list.

Install
-------
Install with JSGME. If conflicts are found with UPC files, do not override or you will mess up whichever mod you have that is conflicting. Report it in the thread and I may update this mod to be compatible.

If you wish to use a weathered version of an emblem that is available, install the optional mod "A Fistful of Emblems v1.51 (Weathered)" with JSGME after installing the main mod, and overwrite files when prompted. Note that only a few of the emblems have a weathered version so far. See the last screenshot for a list of the available weathered emblems.

Questions or comments in the Subsim thread please. Proof readers and grammar Nazis are welcome since I'm sure I made quite a few mistakes.

Known issues
------------
As with previous SH versions, the emblems are reversed on one side of the conning tower, so any text and/or numbers will be mirrored.

Also the single emblem used on the VIIA's is flipped when compared with the one in the menu. So when needed I have pre-flipped (yes new word) the emblem so that it can show up correctly on the VIIA. This means that it will look mirrored in the menu.

If anyone has a better solution to these old problems let me know.

Beware, if you have downloaded extra playable skins from Ubisoft they will no longer be selectable after installing this mod. Compatibility may be added in future versions.

But be careful. I've "purchased" the new camo schemes from UPlay. After i activated this mod the new camo schemes disappeared. I guess the files touched by this mod are also containing the camo schemes.

Would be great if you could provide a version that includes the new camo schemes.

You can purchase new camo skins from UPlay? When I look at my Uplay account the shop section only says "coming soon". Do you mean that you bought a special edition of the game with the skins already in them?

Either way if you want to you can send me your un-modded \Data\UPCDataGE\UPCUnitsData\Equipment.upc and \Data\UPCDataGE\UPCUnitsData\UpgradePacks.upc files and I can look into it.

This mod does weird stuff with upgrades. When upgrading conningtower the wintergarden does not show up when upgrading the FLAKS, leaving you with an empty wintergarden.

Which specific upgrades are causing problems, just the flak or others too?

Upgrade worked fine again after removing your mod. As for now i just noticed the FLAK for wintergarden. The wintergarden FLAK option doesn't appear at all.

Do you remember if you installed the mod before or after starting your career? If the later, do you remember if you installed it while you were on patrol on in the pen?

I know the game caches some of the upc files that contain the upgrades in your saved games folder. I suspect those files might be getting out of sync and causing the problem you're seeing, depending on when you install the mod.

Unfortunately I'm not far enough in the campaign to test the upgrades. If you or someone else wants to check, try installing the mod in the three scenarios mentioned above and see what happens.

At this point I would recommend installing it only before starting a new career just to be safe, until I can figure this out.

Uh, great mod... Though I wish I'd see my old 'Das Schwein' emblem from the previous SH's. If I remember well, It was black and white :) But that's great too, thanks a million :)

For some reason i can't get this mod to work.

I install it with the JSGME but when i am ingame i can only see the default emblems, which i think are rather stupid. So can somebody please help me:wah:

Just came across this problem. I didn't know what mod was causing it and the last thing I thought would cause it was this emblems mod.

I discovered the problem when I was in the pen and had just gotten the ability to upgrade to the wintergarden type conning tower. I could select the upgrade, but the tab for the wintergarden AA gun was missing on the left side of the menu box.

I then went thru all my JSGME mods, disabling and restarting :damn: until I found out which one was causing it.

It does not matter when (in what order) Fistful of Emblems is enabled. It does not over write nor do any of these mods over write it, also the problem goes away when it is disabled;

Edit; I also tried enabling it after I disabled to get acess to the wintergarden AA gun option then saved out on patrol. When I restarted the game and loaded that save the gun remains in place. Apparently the only thing being affected is the menu option in upgrade screen while in the sub pen.

This gives rise to a workaround; Return to your pen after the patol, save and exit the game. Disable Fistful mod and restart the game. Select your wintergarden AA gun and whatever else you want. Save and exit again. Enable Fistful and restart the game. Choose your emblem and be on your way.

Clumsy... yes, but it works.

Do these emblems have alpha channels? If so, I'd recommend dropping them down to 90% opacity, or some level of distressing to allow metal to show through.

Actually on second thought there are a few changes I'd make. to add some distressing. At the moment the colors are too homogeneous to look like a texture sitting on weather-exposed metal.

I'm a graphic designer- I've yet to nab a copy of SH5, but if you're interested and drop me a line, I could totally help add some more zing to the emblems.

Thanks Cdr94, looks like you did a great job of troubleshooting this bug. Can you or someone else reading this send me one of your saved game from the pen, with the wintergarden upgrade available? I've only completed one and half patrol in my career so I can't even test it yet.

In the mean time I'll add your post to the first post so people are aware of the problem.

WHAT IT IS
----------
This mod is a temporary workarround to the SH5 bug where camouflages applied to your uboat doesn't show in missions. Let's hope this will be fixed in a patch soon. But until then...
As of v.1.1 the mod contains every u-boat/conning tower/paint scheme available in the stock game. More skins to come...
I'll look at it as soon as I'm far enough in the campaign or someone sends me a saved game.

these are all at 25% ... i haven't worked with any .dds texture files but I'm hoping someone has an idea on how to get them from .png into SH5, and retain its alpha channel. I can't on my mac at the moment, unfortunately, so I can't look into the process.

I have checked my mod folder to endure that the data folder is directly under the fist full of emblems folder and still no luck getting these to show up. any ideas? if it helps my boat is a type VIIC with twin flack guns, but no Extended lower level winter garden, just the raised flak mount with twin guns.

My problems were all personal user error. and had nothing to do with the load out of my sub. the fix is working fine for my type VIIc with side by side flack guns on a single mount. Thanks again ! and thanks for making sure.

Is there an easy way to create and attach an emblem of my own to the boat with no special software or at least any i have to pay for, and study a course in college to complete?

Yes it is.

1) Desable the mod ,, a fistfull of emblems''

2) Take a picture that you like and convert that in a dds file (with the exact size of 85.5 KB

3) go to C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\MODS\A Fistful of Emblems v1.51\Data\Textures\TNormal\tex

Pick a name of a dds file from this location (ex. 1st-Flotilla.dds)

4) rename your dds file that you just converted from your picture with this name

5)copy

6) go again at the same location C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\MODS\A Fistful of Emblems v1.51\Data\Textures\TNormal\tex

7) overwritte the file 1st-Flotilla.dds

8)enable the mod

9) enjoy in game your new emblem:up:

How do i convert a picture to a dds file? and how do i ensure the size of 85.5KB?

I use paint.net - about the size you will figure out playing with the program paint.net (i do not remember exactly the steps and i have not time now to look in paint.net - i am working some test) if you will not figure out the size we will speak tomorow

Lets say i have my new dds file on my desktop, i go to where the original 1st-Flotilla.dds file is (for instance) and overwrite it?? do you mean remove it and replace with my file??

1) Desable the mod ,, a fistfull of emblems''

2) Take a picture that you like and convert that in a dds file (with the exact size of 85.5 KB

3) go to C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\MODS\A Fistful of Emblems v1.51\Data\Textures\TNormal\tex

Pick a name of a dds file from this location (ex. 1st-Flotilla.dds)

4) rename your dds file that you just converted from your picture with this name

5)copy

6) go again at the same location C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5\MODS\A Fistful of Emblems v1.51\Data\Textures\TNormal\tex

7) overwritte the file 1st-Flotilla.dds

8)enable the mod

9) enjoy in game your new emblem:up:

I tryed just to add my new emblems to the mod but it did not worked - maybe i have made something wrong - or maybe i must to modify an extra file before enabling the mod:hmmm:- this is the only way that i managed to make things working.

Hi mate !

That means, that the .dds File from your own emblem must named in:

custom.dds

and then copy to \Data\Textures\TNormal\tex and after this you can choose it at last in the emblem list when you beeing in port !

And note: No other MOD don´t overwrite the two Files that comes with this MOD: Data\UPCDataGE\UPCUnitsData\equipment.upc and Data\UPCDataGE\UPCUnitsData\UpgradePacks.upc !!!!!!!

Guys, im having some problems here!

I downloaded a painting from the net and opened it up in Paint.net. i downsized it to 84.4kb this was as close to 85.5kb as it would scale and made a few design adjustments.

Im totally happy with the job and converted it into a DDS. file. I then dropped it into Ubi/sh5/MODS/A fistfull of emblemsv1.51 / data/tex/Tnormal/tex.

It now sits below the "Custom.dds" file.

Yet i am now back at base and i does not appear in any of the emblem list???

I have not a clue where you are doing the mistake - the size must to be 84.4 kb after you save (and you must see this size all over the places where you move the dds:D)

How many emblems do you want? if not so many - upload the jpegs and i will upload after the dds files for you (i think when you resize you must choose 256x256)

Thanks again First just convert the jpeg in dds
then open one dds from ,,old fistfull of emblems'' and look at his size, pixel etc

open your dds and resize with the same caracteristics

Basically im beat with this.

I've got a square image from the net, customised it in Paint.net. I've taken a dds picture file from "A Fistfull of Emblems" MOd and sized mine in paint. net exactly the same as follows:

256x256 pixels
Resoloution 37.80
Print size 6.77 width and 6.77 height

These are the exact dimensions of the Working emblems in the mod. I've even got them next to each other in Paint.net and they look exactly the same (different picture of course).

I then "save as" and choose DDS. and it saves it to my desktop as a dds file which looks the same as the ones in the mod.

Yet when i scroll my mouse over the file, mine is 32.1kb and the other's are 85.4kb??????

I've even put it in the emblem file and gone in-game to check, but all it shows is the empty black X where i would expect to see my emblem!!

Someone must know where im going wrong here, i thought this would be as simple as!

sounds like you didn't give it an alpha channel. What DXT format are you saving it as? DXT5?

I was saving it with the default settings, because i knew not what i was talking about. However it seems that if i save it as DXT5 it only 'up's' it to 64.1kb and not the stated 85.4kb!
Is it really the size that is the difference between work and not work?

Either way, i've had a meeting with my crew and they are refusing to leave port again until there is a giant picture of my Butt on the conning tower....i lost a bet with the navigator that the weather wasn't improving.

there's no need to create an account. Just simply press the big yellow upload file icon and then select the file. Once it's been uploaded it will give you a link to the file at the bottom of the page. Copy and paste to here.

actually I just looked at it with the DirectX tools and the one I sent you is probably not correct. This one is correct: http://rapidshare.com/files/446935758/Thanks_revised.dds

No mipmaps, 256 X 256 size, alpha, and saved as unsigned 32 bit ARGB dds format. Gives file size of 256kb just like all the other emblems :D

Either way i tried with both and neither worked!

I thought it would be a simple case of going into Ubi/SH6/MODS/Fistfull../data/textures/ etc and dropping in the file along with the others, i even named it custom.dds and removed the custom.dds file already in there. but this did not work and when in game (sub-pen) i went to upgrade my emblem and at the end of the long list is still the black X where mine should be!

I've put a copy into "Fistfull of Emblems" MOD and the Data/textures file and the DATA/textures/Emblems file, and nothing is shown in my Upgrade emblem list, just the same old black X ???

make a back-up copy for "Fistfull of emblems

overwritte my mod in mod file over "Fistfull of emblems

enable the Fistfull of emblems and Weathered emblems

i do not know what you are doing wrong - i explained to you the steps that i made when i did my emblems

P.S. if is still not working desable Weathered emblems and try again ( i do not use Weathered emblems)

I will have another go, but first i have bigger problems, it seems even extracted files using 7z now turn automatically into Rar files and not the usual ones you find in your folders! all my files on my decktop now have 7z on them and are not the usual windoes looking file.

Unbeliveably i was making many mistakes and by reading your original instructions about 5 pages back its worked!!!

Basically mistake No:

1. I was'nt disabling the fistfull mod first Doh!
2. I was just droping it in the pile and not copying a name of an existing file for it to replace (maybe this isn't necessary as someone said, but replacing U-201.dds with my file named the same has worked!.

Thanks for your patience everyone especially stoianm, i got there in the end.


Now, ive selected it as my new Emblem and equipted my boat with it, i then took a walk down the jetty to view it but my boat still has my old emblem on it? im guessing the new one will appear when i start a new patrol yes?

Also, thinking the bits aon the side of the emblem that i cut away to make it look a bit beaten have left a nice shinny white patch!, what im wanting to do, is colour those bits with a light crey similar to my U-boat to cover them, but im worried that if i open my file in Paint.net i will once again be faced with the size problem??

Here i do not understand:o - to chose a new emblem you must to be in bunker and after that you normaly go in the patrol - how you choosed the emblem and you say that after you will start a new patrol you will see the emblem. you are losing me here

i oped the jpeg file and i choose to resize as i told you 256x256 and also maintain the aspect ratio (important)
i save the jpeg like this
i convert the jpeg in dds and when it asking me what setings i want to use i play with those settings until i have 85.5 size

Ok i'll try, the best i got before was 64kb, but i'll have another go,

Edit: yes its the same game, DXT3 and DXT5 give you 64.1kb, others give you 128kb and 256kb, but regardless of which i choose once i've saved it and hover my mouse over the file on my desktop its always 32.1kb?

When you save it as a DXT3 file make sure you save the mip maps with it. This will give you the 86KB size.

I highly recommend getting DXTBMP program. It will heal all your ills with DDS conversions. You set your default paint program, export the dds file to it, make your changes, save it, and import it back into DXTBMP then save. It is a very user friendly program. I have been using it for years.

I highly recommend getting DXTBMP program. It will heal all your ills with DDS conversions. You set your default paint program, export the dds file to it, make your changes, save it, and import it back into DXTBMP then save. It is a very user friendly program. I have been using it for years.

This is new ground for me...i'll try your program suggestion, though saving mipmaps gives you 86kb you say...but thats not 85.4kb! i though it had to be exact!


Edit: i just quickly tried saving with Mipmaps, and it say's "preview size 85.5kb" perfect. But. once i've saved that and then hover my mouse over the dds file it says 64.1kb!!!

One more thing, im wanting to take a screenshot of my boats conning tower so i can match the colour of it perfectly...i pressed shift+F11 and the screen froze and did nothing else!

Eventually i had to boot out of the game. Anything im doing wrong and where would i find my svreenshot anyway?

If you use the tool "Magic Wand" in paint.net it will select everything of that colour.
So using the wand, click on the white bits and press delete. This will remove it from the image and you will see the u-boat underneath.:up:

With DXTBMP you can also edit/create the alpha channel in much the same way. For emblem alphas, I take the original pic , create a negative image of it and save it. Then I load up the DDS file in DXTBMP, send the alpha to the editor, paste the negative image over the alpha, reimport into DXTBMP, and save the entire thing.

And as stoianm said, your saved pics will be in your root SH5 folder. You are looking for files that appear as (example):
SH5Img@2011-02-11_11.29.33.bmp. <----disregard the link, the forum thinks I have typed an email address because of the @ symbol in the file name.

Personally I am using PhotoShop CS5 Extended 64 bit, with the latest Nvidia plugins. With the appropriate plugins, Gimp and Paint.net support as well the dds format, though I think I've read somewhere that their management of alpha channels is not as intuitive as the one of Photoshop. I can be wrong anyway, as I am not a regular user of those programs.

As for dds settings, I use:

DXT5 ARGB 8 bpp | interpolated alpha
Generate Mipmap

There is another program I use for viewing compression settings of existing dds files. It is called The Compressonator (http://developer.amd.com/tools/compressonator/Pages/default.aspx). It got limited editing options, but it comes handy when you want to view the compression type of stock dds files, if you want to keep the same settings for your custom textures.

Indeed you might want to change those settings, since the use of not perfectly optimized textures in stock SH5 is suspected to be one of the reasons of its bad performances and low fps.

I started new campaign, talk to commander to get mission, quit the game and came back. That way before I go on mission when I talk to the upgrade guy I could do some upgrades, but the emblems didn't show up.

I can scroll down to see them, but they appear blank with X instead of picture. Their descriptions are there.

Is it too early for me to use them? Would I need to go out on first mission and come back, then on next mission I could use them?

I am using OHII 2.2

Your issue is not caused by OHII and it is not date-related either: emblems which are not yet available by date shouldn't appear at all in the upgrades selection menu.

Emblems settings are found in two files. UpgradePacks.upc contains all is needed for making the emblems displayable in the upgrades interface (upgrade ID, name displayed in game, notes, availability dates, etc.), and Equipment.upc is used for setting some emblem properties, including the dds files connected with each emblem. From your description, it seems you forgot to update the latter file. When doing it, make sure to match upgrade ID's with the corresponding ones in UpgradePacks.upc, and to use a progressive numbering for Equipment/UpgradePack definitions (the headers between square brackets). :salute:

Yeah I know what you are taking about, but it seems the Equip_Upgrades_Fix_1_4_Patch_1_AFFOE_151 in the Equipment mod download aren't matching with same files in the download. I just downloaded a fresh copy to check. Those two files in Equip_Upgrades_Fix_1_4_Patch_1_AFFOE_151 don't match up. I didn't see it at firsts in WinMerge. You have to open each one in notepad, thats when I saw it.

My problem was that R.S.D. broke mine, even though I made a sober capability one.

I made compatibly for both mods, I just need to fix the Equipment mod one.

I renamed the folders so it wont get confusing on which ones to use and which ones you have.

Be aware that if you are using the latest OH mod then the first campaign starts before the war starts . So some items like these extra emblems wont be available while at Memel base . They will be available from Kiel base onwards . cheers .

Be aware that if you are using the latest OH mod then the first campaign starts before the war starts . So some items like these extra emblems wont be available while at Memel base . They will be available from Kiel base onwards . cheers .

Something else bugged me about upgrade pack equipment dates. I can not dedicate any time for it.

According to the picture by the beast in the original mod TheBeast - Equipment_Upgrades_Fix, availability dates of alberich impoved, tarnmattte, tarnmattte improved are showing up earlier than expected in a campaign.

Sober fixed a lot in Equipment_Upgrades_Fix_v1_4_Patch_1 (available by date) V9 mod, but do others see dates still wrong for the sound coatings, like I do?

Here is a thread from year back after I did work on No Magic Skills. Some one wanted me to unlock the sound coats but I found out they were already unlocked in the Equipment Upgrade patch. It not explained that they are working but they are.

Yeah I see what you were saying with dates. That has been like that, the dates in Equipment Patch and hot fix never match the picture. There is some stuff that comes out a year early with coatings.

Even in Equipment Upgrade patch they don't match photo. There was reason why some were moved the come out earlier. I'm sure it was debated in early threads back then.

The problem is in the picture, it needed to be updated a long time ago. Original Equipment upgrade match the photo, but he did a patch and hot fix right away and never updated picture. This was a problem back then. The photo is sort of a rough estimate.

Unless someone knows the exact date that each camo scheme was adopted, I think that changing the chart or changing camo's availability dates are pretty equivalent. I know for a fact that TheBeast changed stock availability dates for a simple (non-historical) reason: allowing people to test different equipment from the beginning :yep:

A good platform to base future patches onto. Where they add to mod or change something small, instead of going in and fixing major stuff.

I personally would rather combine the main mod, patch and hot fix in one download. That's what I personally have for my own game. A good way to get organized. I hate clutter and things all over. Makes it better for mod and for future people who come along and want to change something. Less headaches.

I might pick at it a little bit and see what can be done.

I forgot to get the original one:

Everything is so spread out. It was fine back then because I knew about all three files, but coming back and everything is all over, I forgot and got confused. Not good for new player.

Patching some of the EUF files and releasing them as an EUF 'expansion' wouldn't entail any other attention than aknowleging TheBeast for his work. Putting the mod 'inside out' and re-releasing it a stand-alone mod, on the contrary, would require a written permission by TheBeast himself. :hmmm:

In any case I agree with you on the need to merge the various patches, fixes and hotfixes into a single package. It is just a matter of letting windows to overwrite the old files, but it would avoid confusion to the newcomers and possible JSGME-induced errors :yep:

No, it isn't. you should merge AFoE's new entries manually into TWoS upc files. Upc files are in plain ASCII format, so you can edit them with any text editor or, better, using notepad++ or winmerge. Beware that upgrade items are sorted numerically within those files. After copying/pasting the missing entries, you should update their headers so that no number is duplicated/skipped. :)

This mod contains the settings for an additional custom-made emblem. All you need to do is replacing the custom emblem coming with the mod with your one. SH5 emblems need to be in tga or dds format, and they use an alpha channel for opacity sorting.
My suggestion for you is enabling this mod (not compatible with TWoS though), or alternatively just replacing one of the stock emblems with your one. Alternatively you could tweak upc files for adding any new emblem, but it takes a bit longer :salute:

I found a converter which allows me to convert tga files to dss.

However, it hasn't worked.

Simply dropping your emblem in the tex\emblems folder is not enough. As I said before, you need to edit upc files. It is not too complicated: just look into the files of this mod to get an idea on which files and which lines you need to add/modify. Alternatively, you can overwrite one of the stock emblems with your one. :03:
