View Full Version : Questions concerning torpedo performance data and torpedo dates

Hi,

I am working on a small mod to make the torpedo characteristics more accurate via SH3 commander. In this context I have several questions:

1) Was the 44kn setting of the TI used on u-boats? Some sources claim it was not used on u-boats and some say it was allowed but unreliable until middle of the war (when?).

2) Was preheating the TII torpedo possible from the beginning of the war (increase of speed and range from 28kn/3000m to 30kn/5000m)?

3) When was the range of the T III increased to 7500m?

4) When were the depth issues of the TII completely solved?

5) Was the use of the magnetic pistol after the Norway campaign really forbidden or was it just recommended to use the contact pistol?

I found several answers to these questions, however, they are not very precise concerning dates and/or contradict each other :hmmm:. It would be great if someone could come up with some definite answers from a reliable source (maybe original documents like BdU orders or test reports).

Cheers, LGN1

I'm also interested in this. The vague descriptions and occasional GWX radio reports don't really tell me when my torps will be glitch-free.

I've noticed the GWX manual has some interesting pointers about torpedo types. It lists introduction date, speed/range parameters for most, brief descriptions, and a couple of example diagrams of torpedo paths. But more importantly, it talks a bit about actual history vs. GWX implementation.

It said, for example, that historically the magnetic triggering on the T-II electrics was never solved, so u-boats were ordered to use only impact pistols. But GWX does not impose such a limitation on players.

In addition, it has a brief account of Operation Weserubung, presumably after which the depth-keeping on the T-IIs was solved -- sometime in early 1940.

Give it a read. You may find answers to your own questions.
