View Full Version : REQ: Campaign mod (i will help too!)

First of all I'm not a modder, but have used many of the mods on this forum for the SH games so thanks to all you great tech geniuses! However i do write copy professionally for my marketing/comms business, and i make my "modding" offer from that perspective.
Leaving aside the well documented bugs in SH5, one of the areas i am really dissapointed about is the campaign. The structure of major and minor objectives is okay but i feel its really missing the "immersion" factor because as usual with SH they have done so little on briefings, news, communications etc...It's as if you and your little sub live in some closed off part of the universe which has no idea whats going on in the rest of the war.
In my opinion one of the factors which made GWX 3.0 such a great mod was the addition of tons of radio messages regarding other events in the game world - real or not.
So I'm volunteering to help write/proof-read extra communications/messages/news received during the campaign for any mod which will attempt to sort of "GWXise" the SH5 campaign.
As a starting point it would be relatively simple to look at important war news starting September 1939 and write "dry" communications detailing these events. However i have no idea how to mod games so i dont know how one would actually implement the new messages, so if anyone knows and wants to do this, let me know and we can get started.
Of course, if modding the campaign is too difficult no worries, it was just a thought as to how to make SH5 much more immersive.

Actually not noticed any messages in SH5
Only when I send them do I get a reply
Apart from the move patrol area ones
Will have to delve into the files and see if there is anywhere to add them or to them

Only messages is not going to make anything better.
The full campaign needs to be created, like in SH3.
This idea of lots of "mini" missions instead of a full 39-45 campaign is killing the game.
I dont have the game yet, but soon I will have and I'll have it and I'll start modding it, hopefully with the help of someone here... or someoneS.

Exactly; there is zero immersion. At least in SH3/4 in modded form, one somtimes gets re-assigned after making a patrol report.
Its a shame because this is WW2 and there is a vast amount of historical content which could be utilised in order to create an information background, not only immersive but sort of educational as well.

Yes it would be nice to see the campaign opened up as it's only nominally "dynamic" in its current state.

Iīve been messing with SH4 radio messages. :D
If SH5 file structure is similar to its predecessors, I believe the file you are looking for is here: "yourSHinstallfolder/Data/Campaigns/messages.cfg" :hmmm:
Canīt confirm as I dont have Sh5 yet.
If those files are indeed similar, Itīs very easy to mod it. Hell, you could as well copy/paste the lines of SH3 into it (it needs some tweaking tho, but very easy to do)

The missions are bad per se and current parameters can always be changed
Not sure how the game computes completion of your mission success to the dynamic campaign
Yes a full campaign is deffo needed but until one can even be undertaken there is a distinct lack of units available
Warships - esp destroyers and battleships are well catered for but there are no PT boats on either side despite having an S boat tender ingame :06:
Apart from the armed trawler all patrols are carried out by destroyers and the amount that were in the channel as I passed thru in early 40 would have been the whole Br fleet of them
A real lack of any merchant shipping is the biggest shortfall to doing anything with the campaign
There are currently 4 ships of the Liberty model - NLL,NLL_WarSupplies,NKL and NKL_WarSupplies all using same model so not really any variety there
Taking out the duplicate leaves IIRC 7 merchant types and not a lot in the way of tankers
Hard to construct a full campaign with so little esp as the Liberty shouldnt even show ingame till Oct 41 instead of from the start as does now
And still not seen anyone has imported a ship as of yet
But back to messages
Still looking but not found them yet
If get a min will try dropping a message text file into game as SH3 and 4 see if works
long shot but you never know
