Due to many RL messes I have stopped playing for a long time.
Now I want to reinstall SHIII with the last GWX on a pc with Win7 Home Premium.
Any tips on
- Installation;
- Must haves;
- Additional ships (merchant and military).
I believe in these seven months much will be changed, so take me as an absolute newbie.
Gute Jagd.

P.S. *NOT* switching to SH5

welcome back, youll find alot of cool things. I would start with the awesome GWX 3.0 first. Also, now much of the type VII interior has been modeled by flakmonkey and DD and others- check out FM new interior- Raptors done a lot of cool work with the interior textures and dials, JC wolf is coming out with beautiful new screens, I could go on.....basically alot!:salute:

Four major supermods, all of which are great, several tools that completely alter the game, hundreds of add-on mods which do things you've never even imagined could be done, and more being released every day.
Must haves? That's a seriously tough question. What style of play interests you the most?

Style of play, *that* is a good question. I'd say: quite hard and realistic, but I'll never give up on external views for the sake of looking around. More, I've never been good at full manual targeting, and I think I'll have to get some practice to get myself in shape again before I try that.
Ship variety is important to me, I get bored after the third Medium Merchant in a row -- A good variety of naval ships is important too, including capital ships and cruisers -- even if only for eye candy (Italian and French navies are a must, as I'd like to have a Med campaign).
Later on I'd try a manual navigation mod, but I feel I have to get myself used to GWX before.
On a more technical plan:
1. Is it possible to play at high res (I have a 1980x1200 screen)?
2. Are JSGME and SH3 Commander still there?
Thanks again, you all.

In relation to GWX3.0 my card only allows me a maximum of 1680x1050 and yes JSGME is contained within GWX but you must download SH3 Commander separately.

GWX and WAC both add lots of scenery to look at. GWX has all sorts of cool things, including blimps on escort if you go to the right places. WAC has different cool things, including all the correct bridges over the Kiel Canal (even a working rotating railway bridge).
More, I've never been good at full manual targeting, and I think I'll have to get some practice to get myself in shape again before I try that.
I've never mastered it. I use WE Assistance, and compensate by taking several sightings anyway, and never making snap shots. I also use the Assisted Plotting mod, which removes everything from the map but a dotted circle, and it only appears when the cursor passes over it. Locking on and identifying it correctly will place that ship, and only that ship, on the map. It gives a very historic feel to the process.

Both the above-mentioned supermods add lots of new ships to the game. GWX I know offers alternate campaigns, so there is a lot of variety.

People have worked on hi-res mods. I'm not sure how well they work, as I still have an old 19" CRT.
2. Are JSGME and SH3 Commander still there?
Yes they are. Both have newer, better versions.
JSGME:

SH3 Commander Thread:

Get SH3 Commander here:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=733
Also every month I put out an updated list for Commander's 'Ship Names' function. The latest one is here:

You install the following stuff :
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1092
Copy the files of the archive inside the SH3 folder and use the .bat (as admin under Vista)
Then open your Documents/SH3 folder and edit the file
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\SH3\data\cfg\main.cfg
Change the Resolution=1280 x 1024
I also did edit the d3d9.cfg file and put :
resX=1280
resY=1024
But the display only changed when I edit main.cfg
2. Are JSGME and SH3 Commander still there?
Yes. It has been updated to 3.2
Requires a patch if to be used with GWX 3.0 Gold
(that file is available from the Grey Wolves download page)

It looks like I'll have to screw the whole proposition of re-starting to play SH3-GWX, as my copy of SH3 is Starforce protected and it looks like Win7 will not play it.
I've read the threads about it, but the whole process looks like a big PITA------ :wah::wah::wah:
(which means, as usual, that copy protection and DRM hinder only those who legally purchase their SW :damn:)
Thanks for all the tips, anyway.
