Hi,

Does anyone know the amount of compressed air each sub has and whether one can mod this? And also how much compressed air is lost when blowing ballast? I looked at the sim files and could not find any entries about compressed air :hmmm: Is it hardcoded?

In sim. dat file is only setting for compressed air dial. Main value is hardcoded. I use XXI sub, and some time ago I tried to change ability to stay underwater longer for this boat. I mean CO2 settings. I real life XXI was able to stay underwater for about 60 to 80 hours [3 -4] days. In game this time is not so long enough, but this is also hardcoded I think.:yep:

The compressed air is at least useful and can finish when in use for blow ballast emergence uses. Nothing more. In sh3 it is not used when you dive or surface for example.

hi, I'm not so sure, I see it decreasing a little bit when I surface (hitting S) from PD or deeper, but probably it happens at 100% of realism.

Can you take a look at this again? If so we can analise it and make it really usefull in a tactical side.:up:

Well it's weird, I post now some images here.

I was at 0 speed. I ordered 75 meters, sub went at that depth without using compressed air. At 75 meters I ordered Surface (S), sub went to surface without consuming air.. but only at surface, compressed air decreased a little bit as you can see in the 3th image. After a while it was recharged. It happened even at speed (5 kts), but once at surface the compressed air went down with minor extent. Compressed air doesn't change if I change my depth without going to surface.


1. At surface, 0 kts.

So, I don't know how to interpret it. Air should decrease as I hit S at depth. And air should decrease when I change my depth going up without surfacing, but it doesn't. So, is it a bug? is it an unfinished stuff? Is there a fix?

I think in real, this was normal. Emergency surface always expend more compressed air, but even when boat was surfaceing by the stantard way some of the compressed air was used, but I'll check this in my game. I'm not sure right now, because I use emergency surface more often than standard method.:arrgh!:

If you are during surface ( Button "S") want to consume compressed air, then please hang the [Cmd202] in the file ....\SilentHunterIII \ data \ Cfg \ Commands_de.cfg (path for XP) that line the bottom of :

Hi, I also tried that test, never ran out..


I looked yesterday in some .dat files to find somewhat linked to compressed air, but I was not able to find anything.

I seem to remember losing all of my compressed air after taking a severe battering by depth charges and just sitting on the bottom. I remember thinking if I do survive this I probably won't get back to the surface. As it turns out I didn't have to worry because a few minutes later I was a goner.

Ok, I did some more tests. If you press 'e' once, you loose a certain amount of air and start to surface (time to surface is similar to the time required using 's'). However, if you order any new 'depth changing' command the needle stops immediately. Even when you press 's'. :o If you press 'e' twice without any other command in between, you loose air until you reach the surface. In this case you go up really fast. So this seems to be the real emergency surface that is fast and requires a lot of air. Again, you can interrupt it by giving a new 'depth' command. That explains why I never ran out of air because I immediately ordered a new depth in order not to surface :rotfl2:

Can anyone confirm these findings? It seems that pressing 'e' once is really useless. You only waste compressed air.

Another interesting thing: The compressed air dial does not show 0 when you run out of air. It happens earlier. The CE informs you once about it, but not again if you order 'e'. However, pressing twice 'e' in this case has no effect anymore.

Probably the best to think about it is as follows:

'e' once: open compressed air valve for fixed amount of time (depending on the pressure you loose more or less compressed air). Any new command closes the valve at once.

'e' twice: open the valve until surface is reached or new command given.

nice test, I tried it from 85 meters to surface without engines (0 kts). It takes almost 8 minutes to go surface hitting S, and 2 minutes and half to reach surface pressing E once. I didn't see differences pressing E twice in reaching surface. Are you using GWX ?

Anyway, it's true compressed air needle never gets 0 and you still have quick surface.

Sag75, thanks for your reply. I ran the test again and you are right, pressing 'e' and 's' makes a difference (maybe I tested it at non-zero speed :06: ).

I also tried the 'Press twice' trick again and it works. Just press 'e' and watch the compressed air dial. When it stops then press it again (don't press 'e' again while the dial is still moving). Be sure that you do not give any other 'depth command' in between.

Using GWX, I found the following (0 knots, VIIB, 142m (ordered 150m)):

'e': over 4 min. to reach the surface

'e'-wait-'e': less than 2 min. to reach the surface. The compressed air goes down continuously until you reach the surface.
