FYI I was hoping to have this finished by now, but alas, I haven't. In 12 hours or so I'll be out of the country for the next two weeks (and forcing myself to stay offline), so I'll get back to it when I return.

Hopefully at least the main aspect, ie installation, is clear.

If anyone can't understand the instructions, or seeks clarification/elaboration, then pls post here so that the User Guide can become more useful (pls just bear in mind that the empty sections are still a WIP).

Pls note, however, that it is NOT a "Computer Basics 101" tutorial, so pls do not ask how to d/l files, unzip files, open Windows Explorer, create/edit shortcuts, explain UAC etc etc because a) Windows comes with a Help file that answers a lot of these kinds of questions and b) I simply don't have the patience or time.

My aim here is to provide a succinct User Guide for the use of JSGME, so knowledge of basic computer operations is assumed.

Mayhap I'll make a Complete Idiots Guide for this too....although I keep having to edit mine for the goblin editor, owing to my misunderstanding of the adjective complete.
Great job on the guide, and the enabler, been using it since sh3.:salute:

I'd like to have a separate install of JSGME for SHV. I already have one full of mods and enabled for SHIII GWX and don't want to mess with something that isn't broken. As it is, I will probably have to roll back my video driver for SHIII to work properly and that's time consuming enough when I don't get copious amounts of time to play anyways. Sooooo if someone would be kind enough to give me the JSGME step by step for dummies that would be cool followed by pointing me to the list of best mods to try first. I mostly want to have a functional echolot for starters. I tried adding a line in the .cfg file and followed all the instructions but alas it made the game unplayable and I had to re-install......back to version 1.1 for now until I see a reply. Ahoy.......

Erm, read the "Installation" section in the first post in this thread.

And pls, this is a thread about using JSGME, not about providing advice on the best mods to get or how to edit files. There are plenty of other more relevant threads for asking those questions.

FYI I got over trying to maintain two copies of the same thing, so I've deleted the forum version of the User Guide and linked, in post 1, the online version.

Comments/questions/feedback/criticisms/compliments etc relating to the User Guide are most welcome. Post here or PM. After all, this is for you guys; I know how to use JSGME. ;)

JSGME v2.4 will link direct to this file when the "Help" option is selected.

I am a old fart that is having trouble using JSGME with SH5. During the SH5 install it placed files in 2 directories. One is C:/Ubisoft/etc the other is C:/ProgramFiles/Ubisoft/GameLauncher/etc. Now I placed JSGME in C:/ubisoft/SH5 with a Mods folder. When I activate the mods in the mod folder gameplay does not change. I also tried putting JSGME in C:/Ubisoft/SH5/data. Still the mods dont work. Not sure what the problem is. Any suggestions or should I just take a gun and shoot my computer because I am an idiot:)

tibec, the "official" JSGME user guide is linked in the first post in this thread. I highly recommend you read it first to gain a better understanding of JSGME.

Then you can read game-specific instructions.

I can import the mod in JSGME.exe

You have messed up with darkwraiths mod. You have to choose one of the tdc options, not all of them.

ok delete al darkwraiths mods. The rest is still there. The only mod which is working is the Digital Ui Clock 1.1. Why not the rest?

I just saw that there is a new version of this out, great job btw!!! Before I possibly mess up my SH4 version, do I need to uninstall all enabled mods before I upgrade or is it possible to install this over my current 2.3.1.123 install? I didn't see anything in the documentation stating either way. Thanks!

You don't need to disable any mods if you are upgrading an existing v2.x JSGME. Disabling mods is only a requirement if moving from v1.x to v2.x.

I did have this in the Help/installer, but took it out with this release because it is somewhat redundant (v2.0 was released three years ago). I might put it back again if it is causing confusion.

@JScones,

Hi and thanks for the new version! There is one thing I find strange. Is it correct that when upgrading the old version to the new version the MODS are suddenly copied to folders outside the MODS folder? Now I find lots of folders under my D:\GAMES\Silent Hunter 5 folder when there used be just a few folders like DATA MODS and text. Also I find that nog all the Mods are working good when this happens. Deinstalling and installing again (with particularly checking for the right installing folder) gives the same result.
thnx
Marc

JScones

Make sure each mod's folder structure is like:

“C:\Games\My Game\MODS\Cool Mod\data\etc”

and NOT like:

“C:\Games\My Game\MODS\Cool Mod\Cool Mod\data\etc”

The latter has an extra folder included between the mod folder and data folder that will create the exact problem you are describing.

More info in the User Guide, which you can access by clicking the Help link in JSGME.

Hi,

Of course I always take care that the folder underneath is the datafolder. Am I to understand that regarding this, there is no answer as to why this is happening with the folders outside the MODSfolder?

JScones

No systemic answer - JSGME still works the same as it always has, relying on you to tell it what to copy and where to copy it. That's the beauty of JSGME - it's "dumb". You give it a source (the mod folder itself), you give it a destination (where you have installed or pointed JSGME.exe), and it simply does the rest. Get it right, all's sweet. Get it wrong...

All I can suggest is that you double-check your installation, starting with ensuring that JSGME.exe is installed in (or pointed to, if you have a central installation) your "D:\Games\Silent Hunter 5" folder, your MODS folder is at "D:\Games\Silent Hunter 5\MODS" (and this same folder is displayed on the main screen of JSGME when you open it) and your mod folders are under MODS and follow the correct rule. Then, if you're still having problems, you may need to post screenshots.

Just in case a moderator happens to magically appear, this thread can be destickied. It was only relevant when the new User Guide was a WIP. Now the User Guide is live, and accessible via the JSGME interface, it can be left to die.

when Jason created this thread he posted it as a [TEC] thread because it is technical info data thread and not a mod or mod release thread.

names and titles are whatever you want them to be so you can label your own threads as you wish but you cant request that we change someone elses thread to be renamed to your own liking, that's just bad form and not something we do here.

if Jason requests it then I will change the title of this thread to anything he wants it to be.

I have edited the first post to include working links for jsgme and the user guide as well as a note indicating the old link in his sig is dead
