View Full Version : [REQ] Correct names on map
Hello!
I haven't got the game yet, but I noticed on a few screenshots of the map that there are mis-spelled names, such as "Deutche Bucht" (should be Deutsche) and "Nord Meer" (latter should be written together). There are probably lots out there and it probably has been mentioned before, in that case I apologise and you can forget about this thread. :)
I assume it should be a quick fix?
Edit: Shall we start a list? I can't do much since, like I said, the game's not here yet, but if everyone chips in...:D
German and untranslatable names:
Deutche Bucht = Deutsche Bucht
Iverness = Inverness
Nord Meer = Nordsee (if they mean the North Sea)
Cherbourgh = Cherbourg
St. Petersburg = Leningrad
Heligoland = Helgoland
Türkey = Türkei
Indischen Halbinsel = Indische Halbinsel
Newfoundland = Neufundland
Sweden = Schweden
Rümänien = Rumänien
Açores = Azoren
Tenerife = Teneriffa

Another error is "Cherbourgh" (instead of Cherbourg). And actually it should be "Nordsee", not "Nordmeer". I'm sure there are many more.

Actually, it depends:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europ%C3%A4isches_Nordmeer
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nordsee
It's difficult, because the area of operations of SH5 encompasses both the Norwegian Sea and the North Sea. But it's all nitpicking, the annoying thing to me is seeing things mis-spelled.
I'm not here for a discussion though, so I'll leave this to people who can actually mod stuff. :DL

Yes keep up listing the errors guys, I might start working on this next when I'm done with my current project.
Unless someone else wants to step up first.
I've worked on translating the map names to German for SH4 Ops Monsun so I'm already familiar with it. Although I don't speak German so I had to rely on Google and Wikipedia, which took a very long time. Check it out here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=156896&highlight=labels
It would be awesome if you could just make a list in this thread of the mistakes and what it needs to be changed to.
Also maybe we could add certain labels that are not already in the game. Not too much though, we can't turn this into Google Maps.

That's really cool! I think it's important to have good maps, you know a captain wouldn't leave port without one. Even though like you said it's good to not to turn it into Google Maps, I think it's cool when you have labels for bights and inlets and stuff so it's not just names of cities, the sea is what's important after all.
St. Petersburg's correct name was "Leningrad" back in the USSR days.

Hahaha, can't believe they missed that, nice...good catch.
I'm playing in German language, and when clicking on that Island's icon the name is displayed as 'Heligoland', not 'Helgoland', which is the correct German name. Don't know how it shows up if played in English.
It's a question of linguistic consistency.:know:
Helgoland and Leningrad added to list!
Some more errors in the german version as I repuzzle them (can't play, thanks to UBI :damn:):
Türkey -> Türkei
Indischen Halbinsel -> Indische Halbinsel
Newfoundland -> Neufundland
Sweden -> Schweden
Rümänien -> Rumänien
Açores -> Azoren
Tenerife -> Teneriffa
Half of the names are in their native languages while the other half is translated... :doh: What to do? Translate all of 'em?

Personally would change them all to one language
My vote would be German
Fits better

Agreed.
Any idea which file(s) to edit?
Can do this if you wish and no other started to yet.
This reminds me on my HoI3 map edits and those large csv-files... :DL

I think i saw a post here on the forums saying which files that were, because the location names were just labels taken from a textfile or something. But, as always, i can't remember where or which files. Have been digging through the forums and files, but didn't find anything so far.
I'm stuck on this. I've tracked them down to \data\Terrain\LocationMaps. "DeutcheBuchtDEtxt.shp" for example but the numbers in the files make no sense to me.
