View Full Version : Crew Anxiety...

Hi all,
I'm not sure if Silent Hunter 5 takes this into account, but I'd love to get the feeling of a crew's anxiety levels rising as the boat increases its depth.
I understand animations are a problem with SH3, but maybe some sound work would increase that feeling of dread as the boat drops to 180 metres.
Some noticably nervous depth readouts where appropriate would add a lot of tention and immersion I believe.
Just a humble suggestion to all you talented modders in the community..
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Steve

Part of the problem is that they took the easy way out when they made the patch that introduced the depth-report voice. Rather than "Current depth, six zero!" they really needed a complete new set of voice files. If he said "Sixty meters!", then they could have added a change of voice for different depths.
It would indeed sound cool if he was practically screaming "TWO HUNDRED METERS!!!"

Hmm... there is the scene in Das Boot where the LI counts off depth in 10 m intervals as they're sinking out of control at Gibraltar. Are those in the DBSM at all, or even available to be used in a mod?

Hi Frau Kaleun.
The problem is that the game mechanics are wired to treat the depth count digits as individual as opposed to collective, to allow for universal use of voices counting out numbers for elements such as ranges AND depth.
(IE: "One Zero Zero" as opposed to "One Hundred.")
So... if we could modify one element such as the depth count to include 'rising stress' ... range counts would be damaged and just sound wierd.
There are lots of things in SH3 that simply don't leave you with enough string to tie your boots.

:yep:
That's exactly the problem I encountered with the rudder commands. SH2 had a command for 'Midshciffs', so it sounded cool when Jurgen Prochnow said it. SH3 on the other hand, has three commands, "Rudder", "Zero", and "Degrees". That means there was no way to use the "Midschiffs" sound file in SH3.

Never stopped you adding the "ya sexy thing" voice string during GWX3.0 development :har:
