Hi,

is it possible in SH5 to stop all engines and lay on ground like the commanders done it in WW2?
in the previous titles of SH you allways received damage while touching the ground, though all machines were stopped and the speed was 0.

I don't believe so, no.
But SH5 allows scripting, so it may be possible to mod in.

Really? I've read a few times that when people try, they just hover above the sea bed.

I have done it a couple of times now. Sometimes I actually lay on the bottom, sometimes I just stop sinking about two or three feet above ground. If i've completly stopped I usually don't take any hull damage.

In some sections the graphical representation of the sea bed and the actual seabed are off.

For instance, the game reads the sea 50 feet deep but the graphics show it as 60 feet, so you get an invisible line. I noticed it first on the way into Scapa Flow. Took out an annoying little escort and watched him sink. He hit bottom and sat about 10 feet above what the graphics said were the seabed.

Did a test myself and slowly set my sub deeper and deeper. Ended up hitting the bottom above the seabed.

So you can sit on the bottom, but does it actually do any good? Will your sonar echo get lost in the bottom clutter?

The data resolution for the sea bed is quite limited, so if that data was used alone for the generation of the sea bed, it would be very flat and have very smooth & gentle gradients like in SH3.

In an effort to make it look more interesting, I think the devs have added a higher resolution 'randomised' 3D mesh on the surface, to make it more undulating and 'bumpy' in the local area around your sub, complete with rocks etc. However, to avoid the problem of ships & subs going through the peaks of the bumps (and rocks), they've had to 'move' the visible surface down a few metres. As it is, the highest points probably equate to the actual sea bed, but on average the sea bed appears to be lower than it actually is. Hence things resting several metres up...

At least, that is my assumption for the difference between the visible sea bed and the actual sea bed.

For the sake of the the slight amount of eye candy it brings, and the very limited time I spend on external cam, I'd sooner have the almost flat sea bed from SH3 if things would properly appear to sit on the bottom!

It might be another concession made for prettier graphics, and/or attracting the more casual gamers. They are more likely to spend time using external cam when conducting their manoeuvres and dodging DDs & depth charges.

Of course, I could be completely wrong about all this :D
