Oi!

Anyone know if there's more model files for the uboat pens than those inside the sub_pen_left & sub_pen_right folders in harbor_kit.dat?

I replaced the model with my own and deleted all the unnecessary stuff I didn't need (models for the pipes and the interiors), but the interior is still showing up inside my custom model? Heck, I went so far that I deleted pretty much anything in the folders other except my model, still showing.

The thought and eagerness to help in modding was there!!:yeah:
Cheers.

Yes indeed what I'd love to see is the following, if at all possible. The sub pens have been modded to include the "A" and "B" on the entrance. I have a pic of "Lorient" I think which has numbered pens eg. "A" 12 "B" etc. I was going to look into this myself but need more help with designing harbours / blocks of buildings. I think this would add even more immersion if it was possible. Could the left and right be joined in such a way that a digit of the number was one either side so that they came together and could a block of pens use different lefts and rights next to each other if theis makes sense thus: A 10 B A 11 B etc. thus at St. Nazaire/ I think the current A and B need reversing and outlining and the number added in the middle.

Trouble is each pen is a duplicate, so if one was 12 all would be 12!!:yep:
Nice picture of Erich Topp!!:yeah:

I was wondering about that, I didn't know if a "block" of pens could contain different objects eg. a left and right "10" then a left and right "11" etc. I know that there would be more objects, probably talking rubbish I tried in another thread to get more info on editing harbours.

Edit:

I probably didn't explain that well, what I meant was could one "clone" a pen object and change it then make a block of such objects nect to each other?.

As it is, there's sub_pen_left and sub_pen_right, which the game puts next to eachother to make a full 2 pen bunker.

What you describe would (I think) be possible as you said, by cloning and giving it a new texture, after that you should go and edit the harbour layout and change the references to the original 2 sub pens to have, for example, sub_pen_1, sub_pen_2, sub_pen3 etc.

So, very possible, but quite a bit of work just for a few letters. :hmmm:

Or, if someone really wanted, they could just make one big bunker model and replace the stock bunkers with it, but I think there might be problems to get it fit to all harbours.

Thanks Dowly,

I am very happy to work on this if someone can give me some help in the required procedures /tools for cloning and positioning. I'm okay with the texture stuff once I can identify the sub pen textures. I'll have another look in harbourkit.dat tonight.

Cheers

Edit: Okay, just a quicky I can see the pen texture in harbor_kit.dat "Pen_Tex.TGA, this I can edit. I can also see the nodes Sub_pen_left and Sub_Pen_right that you mentioned what I cannot see is where the pen texture is used with the above 2 nodes or is this sone when editing the harbour file?. I'm new to this so please excuse the inept questions. Should I clone those nodes as Sub_Pen_right_1 etc. and also clone the Pen_Tex to Pen_Tex_1 etc. and then set them up in the harbour file?.

Hi folks,

I would appreciate any advice/help from anyone who is familiar with editing the harbor_kit and harbour layout files regarding my interest in doing the sub pen lettering/numbering.

Best Regards

Hi!

So.. first... before you beginn with modding my created sub pens some notes:

1. before you make any changes to a mod with the intention to release, ask the author!

2. your attempt adding the number of the boxes seems coprehensible but the effort to achieve this is not worth the work.
otherwise I had done it myself as I did also know about the numbering!

Some notes on your attempt:

As you know the 2 sub pen boxes are made of 2 almost identical buildings.
The 2 sub pen boxes are used to create all other whole sub pens that are in the game in different harbours.
So.. to get what you want would be to clone every sub pen box for example 6 times and add it to the habour kit.
Now you have 12 sub pen boxes which you could use for building whole sub pens.
But now comes the difficult part. Every harbour is made from a certain .dat file which is in "data/terrain/locations" every harbour has
another count of sub pen boxes and you cant not match teh sub pens to each other with S3D in 3D view like you see all other 3D objects.
You have to make new coordinates for every new sub pen box with getting into the game and positioning the new buildings.
And this takes hours just for one harbour ;)

Also..
With my created sub pens the harbour_kit.dat file already reached over 100Mb and the problems with the "4GB" patch (infact a 2GB memory problem) occured.
I really donīt wanna know which size the file would be with 12 sub pens :|\\

Hope you have some view now how not worthy this work would be in my point of view.

greetings
Han

Hi HanSolo,

Thanks for the very helpful information. I'm really experimenting for my own interest and for my film. I've been modding games for about 20 years, EAW, IL-2, BoB WoV and even SH3 in the early days. I never get the time or, if I'm honest, the inclination to play games anymore my real interest is in my film work.

I wouldn't dream of realeasing any mod containing the work of others without their express permission and credit!.

Thanks again for your help and your great mods.

Best Regards

Aces

EDIT: I fully appreciate your comments regarding the effort involved. Over the years I have spent thousands of hours coding, producing graphics and supporting my work on IL-2 MAT Manager and quite recently many month producing the Multiskin bombers for inclussion in BoB II Wings of Victory BDG version 2.10 so I'm no stranger to "grunt" work :). If I'm successful, and, subject to your prior consultation and approval, my work will, as always, be freely available to anyone who express an interest.
