Update:
Disabled Z and Ctrl+B (Silent Running and Battle Stations) shortcuts for now due to possible issues. Use the "special abilities keys" to activate these for now.


And so it begins.

Since I'm one of the lucky Canadians to run to EB games and grab an early copy of the game....

This mod brings SH5's controls more in line with those of SHIII/IV. These are not exactly in line with the older games due to some inevitable changes in game mechanics, but I think experienced players will feel more at home. It also allows some functions for which I have not yet found an easy access in the game's interface (like toggling battery recharges or various crew reports) to be called up with quick keystrokes.

I will try to make a keyboard layout image, meanwhile here are the changes -

Attack Periscope: Ins/Del - Raise/Lower, Shift+Ins/Del - Raise/Lower Fully
Observation Periscope: PgUp/PgDn - Raise/Lower, Shift+PgUp/PgDn - Raise/Lower Fully

Numpad . - Turn off HUD

This is an extremely basic mod, but I hope it helps experienced SHIII/IV players make the jump, and saves some annoying time of going through the config file by hand (since there is no easy way to change controls in-game) :)

...and I resurface, feeling rather sheepish at my foolish disappearance a year ago. For those who remember me - long story, I will have to explain it later. I may yet be court-martialed for jumping ship without notice, but sadly I've had some real-life issues that made me flip and disappear. I'm sorry I ever left and I sincerely apologize for ditching my duties as mod and modder.

Awesome, I just finished playing my first 10 minutes with the game and I was ready to throw my keyboard through the window!

You just saved a lot of time and frustration to a lot of people.

Oh mang, i downloaded it and was about to use it, but then i noticed you remapped the WASD movement keys.

Using keys other than WASD to walk around is just too foreign to me.

WASD makes good sense to me too... just not so much in SH. Other than being shooter's habit, there's really no reason for these controls in SH5. Mods for SH3 and 4 have free cameras too, and those were always using arrow keys.

As I said, this is mostly for old SH players who feel weird diving with anything other than a D, C or P :)

These are easy to change BTW, just takes a little digging and copy-pasting in the config (took me a couple of hours to find, edit and test commands to my liking).

Also, a request to devs/other modders - can someone figure out the torpedo-tube-flooding mechanic? There are a couple of different commands, but I can't get these to respond correctly. The game keeps opening either Tube 1, or Tube 1 + Tube 2, whatever I select...

(there is no default shortcut for flooding tubes, that I have found anyway...)

Erk, sorry folks - just found a tiny error there. The "X" key for stopwatch wasn't working correctly due to a typo. Fixed and re-uploaded as v1.01. Please re-download if you got the 1.0 file.

Haven't played many subsims? Arrow keys and Numpad 8/4/6/2 have always been movement keys.

Of course SH3 and SH4 are the only subsims to have movement, and then only with mods, and I'm not so much a gamer as a history buff, so what do I know?:88)

Good show, just what I need, the default SH5 keys were driving me batty. I keep ordering hard right rudder when all I want to do is to rotate the scope........:arrgh!:


I see quite a few undocumented keys in there also. I wonder why they always leave those out of the game.

In previous SH's the arrow keys only controlled external camera movement.. which i never used because i didn't have that option enabled.

I've already started remapping controls to my liking.. and WASD is better because there are more buttons around it for other controls. Sure i have to relearn a few controls.. but in the end it's more ergonomic.

You can use your arrow keys and keep moving your hand from one side of the keyboard to the other if you like... but im not. I'm not so stuck on using old SH controls that i can't change.

Decoys work even without the commands mod. Hit "Y" with a default cfg.

hey CCIP, you might want to "re-enable" the keys for moving the scopes. It's a real help when plotting on the mini-map, you can move the scope around with the keys while using the mouse for other things.

I added it to the WASD controls on my end. With Shift for fast, and Ctrl for slow.

Still trying to figure out how to map the hydrophone to A & D instead of Home & End. There doesn't seem to be any commands listed for it.

Also, i'm tryin to figure out how to move the "Ctrl" key's default behaviour of toggling the bottom left UI HUD (to set specific depth and speed) to the now "unused" ALT key. Since i removed the glow, i no longer need ALT.

It's abit wonky to see that UI thing flip back and forth when hitting a command that includes the control key. Not to mention that clicking nose.

Just a friendly heads up:

I checked with winmerge to see if commands.cfg file changed with the first patch... and it didn't. My edited version is identical to the one post patch.

It was definitely working... under 1.00. Since the game got patched and I'm at work, I'll let you know once I get back...

The patch doesn't touch the commands.cfg and I was having trouble using it before the patch.

Might be a bug or just something that doesn't mesh well with SH5 but if you press < or > keys it will take the camera to the closest ship in external view however I wasn't able to get back into FPV. Reloading fixed it though.

Just a minor update - removed the < and > keys for the object view camera as it is presently buggy. Compatibility with patch 1.01 fully verified.

Thanks again. The SHV controls were pretty hard to get used to, and my boat hull is now 99% thanks to causing a course change in Kiel canal. I would have been happy with just a key command for return to course; now I'm elated. I've got my old SH III keyboard commands (modified a little) in front of me now, so I'm good to go.
This game, with a few mods like this one, is not really all that bad. Graphics are just beautiful, and I think only some of the weird commands or lack of commands and the TDC are all that's holding it back from turning into a really fun game to play. (DRM issues aside.)

Maybe add Shift-F11 in the document too, with a warning! It starts a sequence of screenshots that will bring your computer to its knees, until you succeed to press the key combo again :DL

I am just looking for a simple mod/change. Could someone either make this for me please or tell me how to change the keys myself. I prefer the arrow keys to WASD and would like just this changed. Also perhaps the home or end key for x1 time compression.

Are YOU on the bridge :hmmm:
If the kpt ie you isnt inside the boat it wont dive
The text box will tell you that cant dive as crew on bridge - or something like that

Same here - EXCEPT - being a leftie, anything I can't map to PL:@ isn't going to float my U Boat or have me playing any other game for that matter. Hope you get to read this more than a decade later. Lol
