View Full Version : Torpedo/sinking realism?

My first post on the forums is a stupid n00b question! Yay!

Anyway, I've been enjoying SH4 and soaking up a lot of mods off the site here, but I haven't seen one that alters the sinking mechanics to be more flooding-based like GWX3. Well, I did see one, but the reviews it had weren't very promising. Anyone charitable enough to point me to a good one, if such a mod exists? I'm getting a bit annoyed with always needing to blast a merchant with a salvo of torpedoes to sink it...:damn:

WELCOME ABOARD!:sunny:

When you say you saw one that was reviewed as "Not very promising", was it the 'Natural Sinking Mechanics' mod?

I've heard good things about that one.

On the other hand, I understand that it, or something like it, is included in the RFB, TMO and OM supermods.

Hey,

Thanks for the reply. I did check that one out, but according to the forum thread, it's only compatible with 1.4, and I'm running U-Boat missions. Or is that an outdated statement?

Though, I suppose while we're on the subject, which supermod do you think is the best and most comprehensive?

I run three big mods, TMO, RFB and OM. There are more out there. I have three seperate installs and use MultiSH4 to set them up so that you can save settings and careers to each one individually.

This way I keep things nice and tidy, less problems and enjoy them without having to worry about which is better or more comprehensive. Best advise, download, read the documentation, read the forums, each one has its own dedicated thread and then just go out and go on patrol.

Enjoy!

It depends on which side you want to play. For the US side go to the "SH4 Fleet Boat Mods Workshop" section and get either TMO or RFB. TMO can be a bit unforgiving and you'll get a LOT of duds or premature detonations. RFB has more forgiving AI sensors. Also make sure to get RSRD for them to enjoy an amazing campaign.

If you want to play the German Side, there's one simple step. Get OM + OMEGU. However note that most ships don't have visual damage on them, but they do sink properly. Oh, one tip would be to increase torpedo damage by 10 as some ships take a veeery long time to sink. That way you'll only need to shoot an eel for every 4k tons of a ship which is quite realistic.

So how would one go about increasing torpedo damage?

Also, what do you mean by no visual damage? I'm assuming the ships do something when hit?

Thanks again for all the great replies, guys. I've now realized the importance of the GME so I'm reinstalling SH now because my original method was to simply overwrite the game's data folder with whatever mods sounded good.

I echo the first question. The second one, I think they mean that you won't find gaping holes in enemy ships when they're hit like you do in stock SH4, presumably because no one has developed the needed graphics for all the new ships.

After some investigation, it seems one must edit the Torpedo.zon file with Silent 3ditor.

rather than starting a new thread, i'd like to revive this old one

i tried modding the torpedo damage to make it slightly more impressive, but i failed. probably due to me being 'digitally challenged'

So i'd like to request a little modlet which increases it by the suggested 10%

i've been playing OpMon/Omegu on and off, liking almost every little thing about it but becoming increasingly bored with having to babysit targets for hours and hours, waiting for them to stop and sink, firing a few deckgun rounds, waiting some more, etc

it's spoiling my convoy battles and taking away the fun, which is what it's all about, after all.

so could anyone indulge me please?

Quote from a Uboat.net article:
'They then saw an escort lying close to a stopped tanker, apparently to rescue survivors from the torpedoed ship as Mützelburg thought. At 04.01 hours and 04.04 hours, the U-boat attacked the destroyer with one and two torpedoes respectively, but missed and left at full speed to reload the torpedo tubes again. Returning to the area they found the stopped tanker again and hit it amidships with one torpedo at 06.34 hours, observing the ship sink within 3 minutes. The second attack was made by U-124 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u124.htm) (Mohr) who approached the convoy at 02.10 hours. At 02.32 hours, one torpedo was fired at a steamer which was observed to sink immediately by the stern after being hit aft. At 02.34 hours, another torpedo was fired at a second steamer which was observed to sink by the bow after being hit amidships.'

End quote

So yes, plenty of ships took multiple torpedoes and spent an entire night suffering from flooding but not quite sinking, but there were also plenty of ships which just went down. I am seeing a lot of the first scenario, but absolutely nothing of the second one.

Even though i'm now coming up with rather realistic tonnage per patrol, i still would like to see the odd ship just sink like a brick after i hit it, just once :arrgh!:
(kinda like how it goes in SH3/GWX, you know, you never know what will happen but sometimes even the big ones go down from 1 shot and sometimes a tiny freighter needs 2 eels)

Best wishes,

Bosje
