View Full Version : [REL] Charts Overhaul for TMO 1.9

One of the little things about TMO I always liked was the fact that the submarine operating area code names were included on the in-game charts. A patrol was always more immersive if I knew I was conducting operations in Area BRIAR PATCH rather than just a set of coordinates. After finding a chart (available here (http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/rep/Leyte/OpPlan/maps/13-44-L5.jpg)) giving the area boundaries and submarine safety/bombing restriction lane waypoints for the southwest Pacific I decided to make this small mod to add these points to the TMO charts. I also included the correct labels for Exmouth Gulf (POTSHOT), Brisbane harbor (ADOBE), and the patrol area west of Manila Bay (WHITEWASH).

In addition, I included a chart label for DANGEROUS GROUND - the collection of reefs and shoals located west of Palawan Island. DANGEROUS GROUND is mentioned in very nearly every book written about the submarine war in the Pacific and was avoided whenever possible.

Studying our location on the chart of the South China Sea, I was intrigued by the red dotted lines around the very large area labeled "Dangerous Ground" and the notation concerning the area: "The large area west of Palawan is known to abound with dangers. No systematic surveys have been carried out and the existence of uncharted patches of coral and shoals is likely; the positions of the chart's banks and shoals cannot be relied upon. Vessels are warned not to attempt to pass through this area." -- Submarine Diary, RADM Corwin Mendenhall

This area has been indicated on ship charts for centuries as "Dangerous Ground." The area is so named because of the hazardous shoals in the area, including hidden submerged rocks, sandbanks, and coral reefs, often so numerous that ships steam into dead-end cul-de-sacs, and then have to back away and attempt to find another route through. They are so abundant - and some of the hazards shift so frequently in rough seas and frequent storms - that no chart can accurately depict them. - War Beneath The Waves, Don Keith

Finally, I replaced the map on the control room chart table with an actual wartime US Navy chart.

I hope you enjoy the mod.

Very nice! I like the additional labels and the Navy map! :yeah: I downloaded and will try it out.

Very good. I think all those names came from convoy college, where the sub skippers actually stood on a large checkerboard and planned their wolfpack tactics.

Wow! Could you make a version for RFB if possible? I'd love to have this:yep:

Fish40 - go ahead and give it a try with RFB. It shouldn't break anything - just alters the charts labels. Let me know how it works.

On my 69 day patrol in Luzon, Sulu and Celebes I had plenty of time to slowly realize just how many touches you've added to the map.

Very nice indeed! Thanks a lot! :salute:

Nice work virtualpender.

As i recall, that file "fun" to work with? :O:

Tried to install with RFB, but JSGME warned that there would be a conflict since RFB altered some similar files. Didn't want to risk anything.

But it is a very cool addition to the game and your efforts really pay off for the end user. ME :D. Especially when you associated patrol orders with the places you labeled on the map. Good stuff! So the map just got that much better! :yeah:

I am using it with RFB, no problems so far. There shouldn't be any problem IMO, as the only conflict files I got were Map_Strategic.dds & Map_Strategic2.dds => which are only pictures.

THOR - thanks for validating in RFB.

Ducimus - thanks for coming up with the idea to begin with. I can't imagine playing SH4 without TMO.

I came across another good description of "Dangerous Ground" I thought I'd add here for reference:

How would I get the main map but leave the one in the control tower the way it is? I actually look at it often, (believe it or not)

virtualpender

Not sure about that. Sorry.

Oh well screw it then:03: I can live without that little map anyways. The radio has a really good version also. I definately want to try the main screen map you modified.

this is confirmed to work with RFB 2.0 then?
and would it work with RSRD for RFB?

i always loved the TMO maps, i'd love to use it on top of my RFB/RSRD setup

Just to clarify.

I use a mod called "Nav Map Make Over" from TMO.
Love it īcause of its painted terrains an additional informations like this "dangerous ground" thing.
I use it for RFB except to files which conflicts with RSRD.

Is it the same ?

virtualpender

Bosje - this will definitely work with RFB, with or without RSRDC.

McHib - Nav Map Make Over is a composite mod that folds this mod and a couple others together. You won't need this if you are running that one.

Thanks, guys.

I'll up it to FileFront when I get home from work and post a link.

If any mods are listening, any chance I can get this add to the SubSim download section?

I am the 'Mod' for the Subsim downloads section. I'll be glad to do it for you, or you can PM Neal and he can make it so you can upload your own mods.

And sorry for removing my upload - forgot it was linked to from here...

I must have deleted it when NBJackso released his "Navigation Map Make-Over with Airbases"

- which also includes VirtualPenders beautiful work.

News to me!

Shows how little I've played lately. Thanks for following up, Jan.

I'll still PM the file to SailorSteve and ask him to add to downloads.

Thanks everyone!
