Funny name, not a funny thing they are protesting about.
The Australian Government wants to filter the internet to protect our kids from the big bad nasty internet. They say they are only after the real bad stuff but will not tell the public what has been blacklisted or why. Blacklisting occurs after a complaint is posted to ACMA which then decides if it is on the list or not.
Of course the paedophiles and weird buggers will still be able to share their crap with other means like e-mail, newsgroups BBS snailmailing disks etc. whilst Joe Public goes blindly along with this ridiculous idea thinking alls right with the world and that their kids are safe.
The filter doesn't stop you using a proxy to get around it, it doesn't stop what it is supposed to stop and yet 80% of surveyed Australian's support this nonsense. That said at least 91% of them have the good sense to say they want to know what is on the filter and why.
What make me puke most of all is the Minister for Communications holding China up as a shining example of how internet filtering can work!
http://hungrybeast.abc.net.au/stories/stephen-conroy-extended-interview
FFS, this prat couldn't think his way out of a paper f___ing bag!
My biggest concern is how far the Government will go to "protect" us in the future. Lets say an anti-violence lobby group floods ACMA with complaints about a site that discusses war and warfare such as Subsim?
What about foreign news services that do not match the views of the complainant and what if the complainant is the Government itself? Does ACMA have the independence to say bugger off Government that's not bad enough?
Wake up Australia!
Video aint viewable outside australia.
But still.
Wake up!
See filtering is already happening!:D
Seriously; I'll see if it can be found on youtube. The attack only happened this morning so may take a few hours to get uploaded.
EDIT: Not the original but related: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7LOFJNFUaY&NR=1 Gives a good rundown on what the Government over here is proposing and what is on the blacklist.

And there goes your liberty. Next thing will be critical bloggers and then political opponents. If you allow your government to decide what you are allowed to watch and what not you have already lost your liberty. Why is EVERYONE censored if it is only to protect children? Why don't you as an adult have the right to say I don't want to be censored and I'm older than 18 I can watch all the weird stuff I like (except if it is criminal contend like child porn, rape etc.). Why not developing a single browser that will be censored that you can install on you machine that your kid is using while the one that is only used by you has a normal one without the censorship?
Who are your politicians to decide what you are allowed to watch and what not?
Obviously the Australian government is near China politically as well as geographically. :hmmm:

I don't get government doing the job that the parents should be doing.
It's exactly like television programming.
If you don't like the show don't watch it. And if you don't want you kids tuning to a show - block the show/channel etc.
Same with the internet - if you give your children unmonitored internet access it's easy to just block the entire internet and allow access to only a few sites that you know are child friendly.
This should NOT be a government responsibility - it's a parent or guardian's responsibility.
The more responsibility we give to the government the more we lose our freedoms.
I hate misleading titles... :shifty:

On the more serisous topic I totally agree that it is my responsiblity as a parent to educate my children on safe browsing and what content they see. I don't belive in products like NetNanny or the like and I don't want the governtment being my NetNanny either.
The real issue is not so much the access, but mroe the process by which it is being done. The blacklist of intenet sites being filtered will (until it is leaked again), remain a secret, unlike the list of books or films that are refused classification in Australia.
If ther process were open and people had a say in it I think it might be less abrasive. As it stands now, I'm dead against it.

I'm really still stunned when I hear about stuff like this happening Down Under. I know it's partly due to stereotypes I've been exposed to, but it's not the kind of thing I'd expect to go over in Australia with what I imagine to be the "typical Aussie" (of course there probably is no such thing, but you know what I mean).
It's not the kind of thing that's acceptable anywhere, IMO.

And we germans know what we are talking about. We have Mrs von der Leyen and her infamous "STOP" Sign. ;)
But normally, naked bodies are not considered a big threat to children over here.
What I will never get is why especially the female body should pose such a threat to the mental health of children.
Are there really people who think that you will grow up to be a serial killer or sex offender if you have seen a female breast as a 6yr old?
Being german, I never understood the hype about that Janet Jackson Superbowl thing.
Its not something I ever expected to see coming out of Australia either.
Its not so much nakedness that's the problem, nudity on TV etc is not really a problem, its what the naked people get up to that is being filtered.

Typical Australia suck attitude, too many of these stupid laws, like having to wear helmets on a push bike, even over the age of 21, they can pull you over and fine you $150 for endangering your own life!!:-? Gun laws are ridiculous, my son got pulled over by police and they found he had a spud gun, he had to face a judge on that, yes spud guns are banned here!! The policing of bikie gangs has gone stupid, their method of "association" even if you have no convictions is taking away you civil rights! If that law passes Parliament what will be next!!:nope: Then the other stupid laws such as not allowed to wolf whistle, a man hole is to be a person hole! Gee what a load of crap, the wankers that run this government!!:damn:

The poll at the end of this article shows a distinct oppostion to the proposed filtering scheme. http://www.smh.com.au/polls/technology/technology-news/internet-censorship/20100330-r9ft.html
I received an e-mail from Senator Conjobs office outlining how the filtering will make me feel more secure in letting my kids loose on the internet. TBH I could find nothing in the material they (not he), send which would make me want to support it.
But critics say this approach fails to consider that the internet is a vastly different, dynamic medium. They say Senator Conroy's proposal is a heavy-handed measure that is easily bypassed by criminals and could restrict access to legal information.
Senator Conroy has conceded that greater transparency is needed in terms of how content ends up on the blacklist, but last night he again refused to make the blacklist itself public, saying it would provide people instant access to the banned material.
I think this is the place where Conjob shoots his proposal in the foot. We need to make the process more transparent for a filter that he admits is easily bypassed. :88) FFS man grow a brain!

FFS I wish he and the rest of his cronies would wake up.:88)
This is what concerns me most about this whole clusterfark:
"For $44 million, we're buying ourselves an initiative which will have no measurable impact whatsoever," Senator Ludlam said.
"In exchange, we establish the architecture for future governments to abuse the loose and undefined 'RC' category to add a creeping range of material to the list. Once this architecture is established, the idea that its scope won't be expanded by future governments is a gamble we don't believe we should take."

Senator Conroy said he had discussed the plan with the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and she remained committed to it.
But he said they both acknowledged community concerns that the filter could impede legitimate use of the internet.

Many jokes that people from the small island of Tasmania are inbred (their parents are relatives), and they have two heads. "Watch out for people with scar on the shoulder"! (The scar is left after second head was removed).
Tasmania is often jokingly identified as "not part of Australia" by mainlanders.
Another joke is based on Tasmania shape. If you can’t figure out what "Map of Tasmania" looks like, ask any male from 18 to 99 what is it. You get the answer for sure!
