I was a victim of this type of online solo game system in the past. The server went kaput and I could no longer play the game.
It is quite unfortunate that the developers chose this path and I firmly believe if they do not relent that this will be the end of the series.
After seeing the overwhelming negitive response in the poll that was run here, it sounds like they have pretty much alienated core gamers.
:wah::wah::wah:
The King is dead. Long live the King.
I personally think that after some months when the initial buyers have purchased the game a patch will come out, this will be like a second wave of sales, designed for the legitimate people that either haven't got an internet connection or only have dialup that is not good enough for permanent online use! that's a lot of potential buyers, as well as those like me who just plain hate the idea of being online for a single player game!:yep:
Well I hope so anyway!
legitimate people that either haven't got an internet connection or only have dialup that is not good enough for permanent online use! that's a lot of potential buyers
A lot of potential buyers with no connection or dial-up in 2010!!
Maybe, but I guess they were also in the impossibility to get the 1.33 GB GWX 3.0 :hmmm:

My area is on a RIM. No high-speed internet. Had trouble with Totalwar when it was marketed through STEAM. Sometimes 5 minutes to start game. At times I could not connect at all. Support from these companies is useless. I have been playing some games such as Napoleon's Greatest Defeat for several years. Are these online games going to last that long? Will they supply discs for standalone play when the company folds or removes server support? I would like a guarantee form the company.

Roughly 40 percent of Americans do not have high-speed Internet access at home, according to new Commerce Department figures that underscore the challenges facing policymakers who are trying to bring affordable broadband connections to everyone. The Obama administration and Congress have identified universal broadband as a key to driving economic development, producing jobs and bringing educational opportunities and cutting-edge medicine to all corners of the country.

I never trust in a "reliable Internet". No one can assure 24/7 connection at high speed, because is a lie. We need to consider the amount of the bandwidth only required to play SH5 continuously will be huge. I already canceled the pre-order and this is a sad decision because SH is one of my favorite submarine simulators since Silent Service. If UBISOFT continue with this policy, will be a financial disaster for them.
This picture shown what I think about UBISOFT Network maintenance team.

I am not willing to take a chance I am one of the unfortunate ones that have problems logging onto (and staying logged on) the authentication servers. Get rid of the DRM and I would definitely buy a copy the minute it happens.
If they were smart they would do this before the purchase price is 25% of the original release price.

I am against piracy but ubi have to take other steps to avoid that.
Maybe only for starting a game that you have to make a connection to
confirm your legal copy.
So, my answer is signed.
Signed.
Which is a shame, because I'm otherwise enjoying the game.
It has various shortcomings that are being corrected by the mod community and, hopefully, by future patches.
But there has got to be a better way for Ubisoft to protect their product from piracy.

Signed on here too mates, and I might add in talking to a resident of the apartments I work and live at, something really hit me. What about a great many of our war vets, like him are retired and on a fixed income and cant afford and internet connection at all but would love to have this sim and enjoy it. He said he could certainly afford the sim and even get his hands on a computer(and I could help him with that), but a good internet from comcast is out of the question.
And I thought how sad, that a war vet cant have and enjoy this.
And I wondered, if discrimination could come into play.

Bought the game, have a always on connection. can deal with the fact that it wants a stupid constant connection to its server. dislike that it has constant pop up screens that tell me it is saving games n the like ( just put it in the background) and leave me alone. do I think it frustrates and annoys people that bought the game? absolutely. do I think it stops pirates, few if any. If they really wanna do copy protection and use a constant connection, the send out messages to the radio room that changes your mission orders, if you don't have the connection then ya miss out on the juicy convoys. but seriously limit the drm to online play. for off line stuff turn it off, its dumb.

I don't think it will change policy fast - but it's a start. The DRM problem extends to many new releases now and I definately won't support this.
I'll keep the (DRM free) games I've got running as long as I can.
ATB - Mort
Consider this signed by me.
I don't think this thread will do any good. I think the only thing that may impact UBI's decision regarding the DRM is a drop in sales or Uncle Sam telling them to change it (anyone remember starforce?).
I'm in favor of financially supporting game developers. That way we have more games. That is why I pay for my games. Not so I can have the game I just bought (I could get that for free someplace on the net) but so that in the future more games will be made.
But this DRM is crap. Its frustrating and invasive to say the least. Get rid of it. It didn't work and the pirates proved they could crack it. They have proven time and time again that no matter what DRM you invest in they will break it and find a way around it. Lets all move on, stop wasting your money investing in new copy protection schemes that don't work and stop penalizing your honest customers with tyrannical DRM because someone else pirates your game.

signed...there is NO need to make business with a DRM. Its a pain only for the honestly Buyers.
And it is proofed, DRM does not prevent illegal copying. And because some people crack that game, to punish all the other with staying online by gaming, that is just not fair.
Are you guys at UBI not able, to make a game copy protected? Do you have to let pay the honest Buyers for that? That is just poor. No XBOX, Nintendo and other Video games are that ridiculous to do that, for certain reasons. ONE of them, you kill your own Business with such a action. Start thinking, UBI and forget DRM, there are better ways to go, don't you think?

A one-time online activation should be sufficient. They can still tally up how many actually bought the game, including the folks with limited internet connections. Another bonus would be less money spent on server infrastructure; you'd only need authentication services. Less money spent on servers = more money for game development, more money for development of powerful and less obstructive protection methods, and also more money for prosecuting software pirates.

I bought Settlers 7 just to see the updated graphics and enhanced gameplay...not to mention experience the online DRM, and it really didn't hamper me.
HOWEVER, after hearing about all the bugs, missing features and considering the fact that there are a lot of people out there who might actually want to play without an Internet connection (gasp!) including myself, I voted not to buy SH5...;)
