Edit: Aug 16, 2015.
Version 2. This version adds a tiny X at the location of the model to make it easier to find on the in-game Chart/map.

I uploaded it in JSGME format here to Subsim

The Readme:

Readme_Sofu_Gan.txt:

In JSGME format for stock SH4 1.5. Back up your original files.

Version 2. This version adds a tiny X at the location of the model to make it easier to find on the in-game Chart/map.

What it does:
This mod will install Sofu Gan (Lot's wife) which was a well known landmark used during WWII by aircraft and submarines. I have read patrol reports of submarines calibrating their radar by using Sufu Gan prior to entering Empire waters.

It is JSGME friendly... however you will need to edit your Campaign_LOC.mis file yourself using a text editor like Notepad ( NOT Word ) if you are running a mod that alters this file..

Data\Campaigns\Campaign\ Campaign_LOC.mis

If a mod is using this file, be sure to back it up, then make a copy of that Campaign_LOC.mis file your SH4 install is using, edit this copy as shown below, and install your edited copy to this mod in the
\Data\Campaigns\Campaign
folder replacing my stock version of Campaign_LOC.mis file before enabling this mod.

I have included a Campaign_LOC.mis file for stock SH4 (1.5). Of course, replace mine with your edited version if you needed to make the edit:

Lurker gave me permission to base the code below on RSRD’s code because RSRD has Sofu Gan in its historically correct location and the SH4 sea floor is approx the right depth.

Example:
Here is an edit based on RSRD:

----------------------------------------------
[MapLocation nnnn] <----- where n is a number*
Type=0
Priority=0
Title=Sofu Gan
Heading=123.000000
OnLand=false
ShowOnMap=true
FirstRenderStep=false
FileName2D=sofu_cross.dds
FileName3D=SofuGan.dat
LocationName=Sofu Gan
MinObjTerrainHeight=0
MaxObjSlope=1.000000
GameEntryDate=19380101
GameEntryTime=0
GameExitDate=19451231
GameExitTime=0
Font=FPCond18.dds
FontColor=255
UseDetColor=true
ZoomStart=50
ZoomEnd=1
ScaleOnZoom=true
Scale1024=14.377808
Long=16842640.000000
Lat=3576380.000000
Height=0.000000
----------------------------------------------

* the four numbers (n):
Lets say your highest number at the bottom of the Campaign_LOC.mis file is:
[MapLocation 1123]

You would edit the block of code above (in this Readme) to read:
[MapLocation 1124]

and paste the above block of code with its numbers at the botom of your Campaign_LOC.mis file.

(above this part):
[EditorParams]
InitLongOff=-11607000.000000
InitLatOff=5980500.000000
ZoomIndex=0
Prefix=

Do a search in your Campaign_LOC.mis file for: Sofu.

Maybe your Campaign_LOC.mis file already has Sofu Gan in this file. In that case you only need to paste the block of code into the file to show this model by replacing that block of code (if it exists in the middle of the file), with the [MapLocation nnnn] lines of data above.

----------------------------------------------
Thanks to S3D, Nisgeis & DarkFish; without their help I couldn't have imported this model into SH4. Thanks to Lurker (lurker_hlb3) for giving me permission to use RSRD’s code as an example in this Readme.

I am in no way intending to suggest that anyone mentioned endorses this project.

This is freeware, not for commercial use, and I am not responsible for anything that happens to your computer. Back up your files!

Happy Hunting!

I'm really happy to finally see it while on patrol. Hopefully others will enjoy seeing Lot's wife / Sofu Gan as they enter Empire waters....

I just finished reading "Submarine Diary" by Corwin G. Mendenhall and Sofu Gan is mentioned numerous times in the book. It's great to finally see her in game. Thanks for making this happen.

Thanks, Check out this thread and look at the other screen shots first:

- I don't think it's too light. (The morning sun is reflecting off bird droppings) ...lol

I used this public domain picture for the texture.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/34/Soufuiwa_07.jpg

You could darken up the texture easy enough with a graphics program like Gimp or Photoshop if you want.

May sound lazy but anyway to make this so dont have to edit anything, just enable jsgme? Keep in mind that it is JSGME for stock.
- OK, PM me with your address and I'll send you mine - then send me the file in a zip or rar, 7zip etc and I'll edit it for you.

just my observation based on the size of the waves in that real life image, i think you need to double the height and width of it but the shape and colors look spot on.

maybe 2 sub lengths high and 1 sub length wide

excellent work :yeah:

Webster, Webster - Thanks - (I think) ......lol

From the discussion topic,
(http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160204):

Sources I have read say that Sofu Gan has a summit height of roughly 325' or approx 100 meters above sea level....

To rough it in I Imported a SH4 Gato class model which is approx 310' long to use to compare when I built the mesh.

This model is close enough for me. As I said, It is intended to be a representation of Sofu Gan, not an exact duplicate my crew can climb and measure.

If you want to build a model that is 600' high and 600' +/- wide feel free but it would be twice as tall and wide as it should be.

I am satisfied with it as it is. It isn't perfect but at least it is close to the correct size and close to the correct location.

I think Webster's right, using a pencil to get the length of the sub and then comparing it to the height of the rock, it's about 60% of the height of the rock.

They had a lot of rain that day and the sea level rose.:D

That's gotta be it - lol - (man, this is a rough crowd to please......)

OK, it looks like a nice day for a cruise:

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/ptcbupers/SH4Img_Sofu_Gan13.jpg

the result:

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/ptcbupers/SH4Img_Sofu_Gan14.jpg

It's close - 290' - 300' above sea level when it should be 325' +/-

If one wants to pick it apart further, the north - south, east - west measurements are off as well, and the precise shape is a little different too.

Like I have said, this is meant to be a representation of Sofu Gan, I built it for myself, and thought I would share it if anyone else wanted it.

I'm so happy to finally see Lot's Wife in SH4 !! I've been intrigued by Sofu Gan since 2002 when I first saw it in our mission orders and looked it up.

OK, I think in your first screenshot, the sub is closer to the camera than the rock, so it made the rock look smaller. It looked fine in the WIP thread, so I wondered what had happened to it :-).

Little confusing to those of who do not reguarly fool around with game files, so not easy to tell what to do exactly....I enabled the Sofu Gan mod with JSGME.Opened the campaign.loc in RSRD with notepad as said, found this:

[MapLocation 459]
Type=1
Priority=0
Title=Sofu Gan / Lot's Wife
Heading=123.000000
OnLand=false
ShowOnMap=true
FirstRenderStep=false
FileName2D=None.dds
FileName3D=Small_Pacific_Harbor_IV.dat
LocationName=Sofu Gan / Lot's Wife
MinObjTerrainHeight=0
MaxObjSlope=0.000000
GameEntryDate=19380101
GameEntryTime=0
GameExitDate=19451231
GameExitTime=0
Font=FPCond18.dds
FontColor=255

ScaleOnZoom=true
Scale1024=1.000000
Long=16842640.000000
Lat=3576380.000000

So what next? Read it and see if says if sofu gone is already in .loc file just have to " (above this part):

[EditorParams]
InitLongOff=-11607000.000000
InitLatOff=5980500.000000

Do a search in your Campaign_LOC.mis file for: Sofu. Maybe your mod already has Sofu Gan in this file and you only need to paste in the above block of code into the file to show this model by replacing the block of code if it exists in the middle of he file etc.

The above confuses me a bit.HELP!

aanker
11-08-10, 08:34 PM
OK, if I understand you right, you found Sofu Gan in your Campaign_LOC.mis file. Is this right?

If so, I would try...

Make a copy of that Campaign_LOC.mis file your RSRD mod (or whatever it is) that is using that file and already has the name Sofu Gan in it, and put that copy in my JSGME ready Sofu Gan mod where it belongs in the Sofu Gan folder in the MODS folder replacing my Campaign_LOC.mis file.

Then make this edit in the copied Campaign_LOC.mis file using a text editor:

In your Sofu Gan block, your [MapLocation 459] find the line:

FileName3D=Small_Pacific_Harbor_IV.dat

and change it to:

FileName3D=SofuGan.dat

Then enable the SofuGan mod with JSGME. This will be on top of (or after) RSRD.

Hope this helps and that I understood your question.

Back up your files and don't edit an enabled file in a mod. Uninstall my SofuGan mod while editing it, then enable it after you made the changes above.

Happy Hunting!

Using the technique above, replace your 459 Sofu Gan block with this 459 block using a text editor - don't include the dashes:

Edit the copy of the Campaign_LOC.mis file 459 Sofu Gan block you put in the Sofu Gan mod.

line above to match your RSRD line.

I added a tiny X to the Chart/map because too many folks had a hard time locating Sofu Gan..
-------------------------------------
I purposely did not include an "X marks the spot" because the Lot's Wife, Sofu Gan, or Sofu Iwa text is right there if you zoom in a little. Plus you get the excitement of finding it yourself.

If you zoom out to the "small squares" of Lat & Long you will see Tokyo. Tokyo is approx 35-30 N, and almost 140E. You can find Tokyo, right? Count down 6 "squares" from Tokyo to the 29N - 30N, 140E - 141E "square" and zoom in a little. There is shallow water that rises up 1,000's of feet from the ocean floor at that location and Sofu Gan is on the highest pixel.

I know I made a screenshot of the map so I'm going to go find it and add it to this message. So I don't get nit picked on this, I realize Lat/Long are not squares and the Earth is an oblate spheroid, but for SH4 remedial geography I'm callin' them squares and that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Close up:

http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p157/ptcbupers/SH4_Img_Sofu_Iwa_Map_close.jpg

The Dev's really got this close.

Regarding detail, USS Tuna did a special mission in the Java Sea area on Sanbergelap Island and if you zoom in real close that tiny island is on the SH4 map too. I truly believe they had intentions of going into much more detail with SH4 including these landmarks - if only they had the budget.

Well, good luck finding Lot's Wife - I'm confident now that you will.

Happy Hunting!

So I'm doing something wrong. I have TMO2 Beta and RSRDC. I followed ankers by copying his campaign.loc changes into the Mod folder where Sofu Gan is and ran jsgme. Now I was out on a campaign mission, not in port. I was going past Sofu Gan and approached within 600 yds and saw nothing. Since I have RSRDC Sofu Gan is located on my Nav map. What am I missing??

With RSRD I would think all you would need to do is plug in the model.

Are any text lines different between RSRD and the section in the Readme if you compare the two?

That must be it. Sorry, I forgot - it has been quite a while since I added it. I do remember making that change and I was approx 50 nm from Sofu Gan when I installed it - breaking all rules, but it worked, which was nice. The first time I saw it from the bridge emerging from the haze as I made my approach left quite an impression. It was also nice that something actually worked for me (for a change).
