I believe there was no alcohol.. Germans were very strickt.
I suspect they ate more or less the same as when they were not on a Uboat...
Uboats were not very well designed to deal with food and its consumption I guess..
(no dedicated place to store food, only 2 toilets and a crappy twin plated stove for cooking.)
Its as if after they built them - they figured, hey these men need to eat!
- oops didnt think of that
Ordinance takes priority I guess.

Lothar Gunther-Buccheim, in the book Das Boot, described the specific way each of the officers took his daily lemon ration. If I remember correctly the Chief Engineer put a spoonful of sugar directly in his mouth, then ate the lemon slice. The 'special cocktail' was the favorite of the 2WO. This is very nicely depicted in the movie. No mention is made of it being a regular u-boatman's drink, just one man's idea of teasing his fellows with his weird habit.

Don't know for sure. Maybe they were afraid that the sailors might not eat any citrus while ashore, and the boat was the only place they would get it. Or maybe it was just tradition held over from the sailing ship days.

From what I've read, cases of beer on board were not unheard of, but the rationing of such was controlled by the captain. A celebratory half-bottle per man would be typical.
EDIT: A few pages down in this interrogation report, you can see a list of the the provisions U-434 took on at Vigo. A case of beer, quite a few bottles of liquor and 2 cases of wine are amongst the supplies.

We can all thank god that Ubi finally started to get serious and start to code and simulate the important stuff. Been long over due. Soup is what has been missing from SH - SH4. What is next in store in the SH line???
SH6 - March, 2011
917 lbs. fresh lemons
"Herr Kaluen? How is the lemonade?"
SH7- 20121,226 lbs. bread dough
"Herr Kaluen? How would you like a nice Knish? you look skinny! Here take two"
Submarine simulation at its zenith. :yeah:

I vote for a fully modeled chocolate cake!
One of my favorite things in the book Das Boot is when there's a surprise dessert of chocolate cake, two slices per man, after which the cook hastily explains to der Alte that he HAD to make several chocolate cakes in order to use up eggs that were in danger of going bad.

Oh not , Whale meat again ..... :woot:
Ok I'm out a here ...
Since vitamin C cannot be stored in the body, first symptoms of scurvy (tingling in the gums) can begin to show witchin two weeks without any vitamin C intaque.
Sourkraut is a reasonable vitamin C provider, a reason why Dutch ships had no problem in reaching the East Indies with healthy crews and got ahead of the Brits.
Fresh cabbages last about a month, if stored properly.
Cabbage salad:
Chop cabbage real fine, season with lemon and salt.
Bratwurst, boiled potatoes and sourkraut will give you a typical U boat dinner.
Even in the dry US Navy, submarine captains carried 4-5 whiskey bottles for medicinal purposes.
My U-boat cocktail consists of Cuban rum, cream and a bit of sugar. After sinking a battleship, I add a farting banana. :D

Alcohol was provided to Kriegsmarine warships of all types and sizes. All vessels had bar cabinets for officers, and on major surface warships sailors were provided with an amount of beer and allowed to drink when off duty quite freely as long as they did not get drunk - unless green light had been shown by the Captain. On minor warships use of alcohol among the sailors was mostly limited to special occasions.
