View Full Version : South of UK grinds to a halt

It was inevitable, but as usual the slightest bit of snow and this country stops.....

Things are just as bad here, in the North Yorkshire hills.
It took me 4 hours to drive 30 miles on the motorbike yesterday (and I
came off once).
Today I'm not even thinking of going out; it's far worse.

I'm looking for my thermal undies as I type. :yeah:
The way the weathermen carry in, you'd think it was the apocalypse!
And we go live to our weatherman in the field for an update...

Pfft! As if a Scotsman would complain about the weather!
They take pride in not wearing socks, anything under their kilts and going out in all weather.

OT: I didn't know you rode a motorcycle, what kind?

I have to say, I don't envy the British. With your single glazed windows and your badly insulated houses where the temperature is turned off at 23 o'clock, I don't miss being there at all.
Your spring and summer time is nice though.

I ride one all year and it almost kills me.
Right now I have a slightly boring Honda CBF600 (a naked down-tuned
hornet). Im much more passionate about my former bike; a Honda VFR400.
A real revvy pocket rocket.

What's the point of having any glazing at all when your place of abode doesn't even have a roof

I have a feeling Alaskans/Canadians/Norwegians/Russians/et al. all laugh at those of us who live in warmer climes who can't stand a little snow on the ground.
Maybe you guys should use the Save Campaign trick to clear it right up :O:

Snows stopped here, now we got the freezing temperatures (for the UK at least). Fell to -16 degrees C not far from where I live last night, and it could stay like this for up to a week .
Not so bad around here, have been to Ipswich to see Avatar and back again. Worst bit was a bank of snow not far from here, visibility went down to a couple of meters for half a mile or so.
If you drive slowly and sensibly and don't think that you're invincible, there's not much of a problem, but considering how many people around here put themselves in trees in summer...I don't hold out much hope for a quiet night for the AA and RAC.

Well then you haven't been to Britain, or you are making some attempt at sarcasm.
I'm double glazed all round like most people and have ample heating.
Plus I love driving in snow. My little car gets places where bigger ones don't. As long as you think ahead and know when to go and when to turn back driving in snow isn't a big deal.

Home sweet home :DL
Ok, now it's coming down. Looks like the locality will be in full panic mode tomorrow and the town will be cut off from the world.
It'll make walking to work tomorrow morning fun, hopefully the County Council hasn't run out of grit yet and can do the roads so I can walk on them. :hmmm:

:har: They'll probably want the work when they run out of grit and have nothing to do! :salute:
How do you poms run out of grit? All your drama's keep banging on about their gritty reality.
:hmmm: Maybe the marketing guys are just full of something that rhymes with grit?

Dieu de batailles, where have they this mettle?
Is not their climate foggy, raw, and dull?
On whom, as in despite, the sun looks pale,
Killing their fruit with frowns? --Henry V
Sorry Shakespeare. Time for a re-write. :D Let's substitute a climate of icy, frosty, and exciting.

I think the fundamental problem is that some councils/local authorities have sufficient finance to stockpile supplies and others haven't.
So dig a hole!:D

Gordo and his government are already on it! :salute:
There goes the last of the heating oil and milk...
I am just going outside and may be some time.
Proof that we could actually deal with snow once upon a time:

Youcould reopen the coal mines and solve the heating and grit problems at a stroke.:D
I love the snow plow on the rescue engine. Steam power may be the answer.
