Mod GREAT WAR Part 1 - "The Battle for the Baltic"

Mod "The Battle for the Baltic" is a story about actions of the Soviet fleet of submarines in Great War.

The player will operate the basic types of the Soviet submarines. In difficult conditions of Baltic sea: small depth. Continuous danger from the mines in gulf of Finland (beginning 1942 - till the end of war). The full superiority of aircrafts of the opponent in the War beginning.

In the mod have appeared more than 100 new various units (aircrafts and the ships), for example:

German Easy Cruiser "Leipzig"
German mine layer "Brummer 2"

German type destroyers "Narvik"
The Finnish Battleship of coastal defence "Vjajnemjajnen"
Finnish mine-sweeper type "Rautu"
The Finnish gunboat "Hamenmaa"
The Soviet lungs of a cruiser of the project 26
The Soviet destroyer of type "7u"
German fighter "FW-189"
German dive bomber "Ju-87"
German dive bomber "Ju-88"
German bomber "He-111"
German Sturmovik "HS-129"
The Soviet fighter "I-16"
The Soviet fighter "La-7"
The Soviet dive bomber "PE-2"
Soviet Sturmovik "IL-2"

Areas of patrols in this project - real and historical. They were created on the basis of real campaigns, maps of that time and memoirs of veterans - submariners.

The mines obstacles were created on the basis of maps and schemes of that time. The mines obstacles on 95 % coincide with real in that time.

Commanders of submarines will have various fighting missions. Including - rescue of crew of a submarine which has an emergency.

I very well understand you. Because my English is very-very poor however. SOM Group need the translator. At least for the basic part of the project.

Am I doing something wrong? I have SH4 v1.5. I downloaded both the mod and the fix and installed both with JSGME. Started the game and saw the new screen. :D Looks good, very nice:up:... but then everything is in Russian :hmmm::06:

By guess, I start a career. Orders come in Russian except for the words "Porpise" and "Pearl Harbor". Started first patrol... to Luzon??

When I went to the navigation map it looked very different, but I could see that I was in Pearl Harbor:o... then it crashed. Tried it again and got the same thing.

Not using with any other mods. Hope someone can help. Very excited to be on the Soviet side:yeah:

now i wouldn't mind if the menu were in russian (i can read cyrillic so i could guess the meaning of most words) but with this kind of gibberish it's unplayable...
I think that my version of SH4 (EU version) displays the characters differently than the russion version..

Very interesting, a very neglected part of the war and the Finnish defense on all fronts was a marvel of determination and freedom. Glad to see this era getting attention, hopefully once a translated version or at least a translated GUI is available we can play this. Thank you very much for this fine effort.:salute:

This looks like a great mod! The Russian subs are wonderful, and the Russian voices are cool, although there are some glitches.

I've managed to get this mod working with v1.4, fiddling with the game files.

The menu texts are in Russian. To change them back to english, simply go to your original Sh4 folder, and copy the file "menu.txt" to the Baltic mod. It goes into the data\menu folder. This will change the menus back to english, but the campaign selection and mission briefings will still be in russian.

If the game crashes while zooming on the navigation map, try this: go to data\campaigns\CampaignRU and open the file "GW_LOC.mis" with your notepad. Use the replace function to replace every instance "Agency_12.dds" to "FPCond18.dds". Click "replace all" button. This should fix the navigation map crash.

If you can run single missions with a russian sub, but not the campaign, there is a problem probably in the campaigns or upcdata folders.

Great work on this mod!

Still crashing, though. If I zoom out on the map, the game will crash. If I zoom in, the game is ok. If I zoom out will it always crash.

Edit: Thank you Zel, I will try the changes you recommend.

Keltos, we def want Japanese voices and language in mod, but if possible with english translation in the dialogue box at top, like in u boats when they use german, things are put into english in texas.

I plan on trying the Russian mod as is in Russian until someone is able to translate it into english, should be a challenge, hell perhaps I will learn some Russian:rotfl2:

Six hours of playing and i still can't get out of the Gulf of Finland without hitting a minefield - very challenging.

Are there any maps of minefields in the Baltic sea during WWII? I looked on the internet, but couldn't find much information. Thanks.

I tube is worth the same problem and managed to solve one of the mods in a folder named MENU and inside is menu.txt delete that file and stays in the language you just have to put tengais delete that txt file and load the mod in the manager but would not know which mod is because I e renamed to distinguish them from others hope to serve you support

vale yo tube el mismo problema y consegui solucionarlo en uno de los mods hay una carpeta llamada MENU y dentro se encuentra MENU.TXT borrais ese archivo y se queda en el idioma que tengais puesto solo hay que borrar ese txt y cargar el mod en el gestor pero no sabria que mod es ya que yo los e renombrado para distinguirlos de los demas espero que os sirva de ayuda

Yeah - Im having this problem.
I used an online translation service to translate the Battle for the Baltic readme into English.
It reads a bit funny, but is understandable.
Gives good info on flotillas, subs, minefield locations etc.
Armed with this knowledge I'm going to go back and try and get to my patrol area.

But I don't speek Russian so it is slow work.

I did this to my game and it stopped the game crashing in the Nav Map.

open data\campaigns\CampaignRU\GW_LOC.mis and replace all "Agency_12.dds" with "FPCond18.dds". You'll find these INSIDE the GW_LOC.mis file.

Has anyone managed to hit anything? I was shooting a ship on anchor in Kotka from 700 meters and missed twice. I mean, I might not be a :arrgh!:, but TWICE, come on!

Do I need to know anything different about torpedoes here?

They do not turn after leaving the tubes. They just go straight ahead.
I know that the Russian subs of the period had only a rudimentary fire control system. It is probably to simulate that. They cannot transmit gyro angles to the torpedoes.
You have to aim by turning the boat, like a WW1 sub.
Easiest way to do this is use the TDC to set up a zero gyro angle shot.
Or use a lead angle calculator like this http://www.couscouscrabcakes.com/okane.html
I know the Russian 53-58 torpedo goes either 30.5 or 44.5 knots.
Or just estimate it and fire a spread along his track.
Sure makes things challenging!
And I was pulling my hair out until I figured the torps do not turn!

EDIT:L There is also an electric torpedo, the ET-80 available after 1943. This goes at 29 knots. I do not know if this one is capable of turning after leaving the tubes.

My question is how do you worked out these planes.
I need better Models for Nakajima Ki 43, Ki 44, Ki84 and Kawasaki Ki 61 for FOTRS !

Is it possible to help me ?

great mod - while nearing my patrol area I was surprised to find myself ambushed by 2 torpedo boats steaming towards me at full speed. Before I knew it half the Finnish fleet steamed towards my position, and with my "always attack"-philosophy it's needless to say I didn't last long:)

I was also pleasantly surprised to find my AI torpedo launchers on them - but used in a slightly incorrect manner as they are visible and too close to the ship.
To make the launchers invisible again, open Data\Library\ShipParts\torpspawngun.dat and uncheck the 'Visible'-box on each node.
Also, I advise you to move the launchers a little further off the ship, or the torpedoes will not launch correctly (if at all).
Poul, maybe you could fix this in a follow up version?

Yeah I just got jumped by two of those suckers, barely 25km from leaving port. Seems by the time your watch crew spot the they are really close. And they're fast eh?

UPDATE: I have just had a conversation with Poul via PM.
The team are planning Part 2 which will cover Soviet naval operations in the Black Sea.
But first they want to finish Part 1. They will be making Soviet uniforms, medals and awards, co-ordinates for maps, periscopes, submarine interiors. A lot of work, but I have high hopes for the team, the work they have already done is very good.

I myself am working to translate the mission orders into English, which will be ready for release soon. Then I will move onto the radio messages. Very important for immersion, but man it's a long and tedious job! I also may do a quick overhaul for the office to make it feel less like you are sitting in an office at Pearl.

I think this mod has great potential, and am glad to be involved in it in my small way.

I don't think they have any plans for that at the moment. The amount of work they have before them is immense. Maybe once the whole project is finished it could be altered to do this. But such a thing would be a long time in the future.

Thank you so much! I got my first kill this morning.

It is so much harder, the AI ships see the torpedo almost all the time and manage to avoid it.

A couple of notes, 1/3 and 2/3 ahead in russian are mixed up. The M-type's flak gun looks more like arti, I wasn't able switch to AA shells. Anyone else noticed the same?

Excuse me, but I have not understood your idea. You wish to continue a life of this project after 1945? (Cold War of Soviet Union after capitulation of Germany. If I have correctly understood.)

You wish to make the compatible mod? Or to take "Battle for Baltic" as a basis for the new mod?

In any case: it is yet not ready project. It will change still many times. It will be improved and become more complicated.

if you want to play modern soviet submarines, play Dangerous Waters with DWX-addon, and have fun. this project is about world war two, and i really doubt that mod-team wants to create it compatible with modern subs. if you want, of course, you can add subs.

On another topic, does anyone know what the ratio of Officers, NCO's and Sailors was on these classes? I've got "Red Star Under the Baltic" by Viktor Korzh, so that gives me an idea, but I'm having a go at "RFB-ing" the crew compliments (edit: Oops! Forgot to say "For my own personal use!"), so I'd appreciate any extra info.:cool:

Wikipedia gives total compliment only, with a bit of extra detail for the S-Class and the Lembit.

Hi,

I was wondering if we could use, with all credits given of course, one of your boats to make an AI sub for the IJN campaign "Climb Mount Niitaka" ?

Although not at war, an IJN sub, I-25 ?, sank one of two russian submarines travelling together from Valdivostok to Murmansk via the Panama canal.

Yep, torpedoed a type 39 Torpedo Boat off Riga and it bounced a few hundred feet in the air, kept on bouncing, then CTD!

My sub gets totally destroyed. I am usually trying the "M" or "C" type sub. I love the mod but problem is getting annoying enough for me not to play this new wonderful mod. This happens a few hours after leaving the home port. I am usually in the deeper channels. No enemy ships nearby. Even submerged. No closer than 10 miles to an enemy town near the coast. Even further from coastline in shallower water but still I get destroyed. Crew is fine. Hull integrity is first at 100% until being destroyed. I've only played in the years 1941 or 42. I have totally uninstalled all mods to see if anything is residual or left over from old mods which causes this strange problem. No solutin found.

Once I get to the intersections of Gulf of Bothnia, and the Gulf of Finland I am fine. Game plays fine for every other major mods such as Trigger, Falling, Run Silent, Operation Monsun. As this happened to anyone else where someone has found out they had some Baltic corrupt files somewhere? Any ideas?:hmmm:

Sounds like it could be a minefield.:hmmm:

I had that as well as I also run the realistic mine mod. Once I had a look at the campaign layer in the Mission Editor, I saw most of my CTD were due to me getting near or into a minefield.

Best thing to do would be to hug the coast and try to avoid the anti-sub patrols.

I thought I read somewhere that the mines was near Sweden. Maybe I mixed up a mission to look out for mines near Sweden. It doesn't help either I was time compressing at 8192X!!!!:rock:

I don't have it installed at the moment, but I played around with the minelaying sub when I had it.

I think you have to set up the TDC for a stern shot (the game still thinks it's a torpedo in the tube).

So if you don't set up the TDC it won't let you 'fire the tube', because it thinks it is outside the gyro range of the rear tube.

Give it a go and let us know how you get on. :DL

The .sim file for the Type VIID as been modified to support 15 SMA mines and to launch and reload them ever 15 seconds. You will find that you have one already loaded in the aft tube plus 10 in ready reserve, with the remaining 4 in the external storage. To launch do the following:"

"A.– set ships speed to 4 knots
B.– go to Attack Map
C.– select tube 5
D. - select manual TDC"

The minelaying missions are actually set up as part of a patrol mission.
So after you have deployed your mines you still have to remain within a certain radius of the mission icon for a certain amount of time before the objective is completed.

I had the same problem when I took the minelayer out first time. I assumed that laying the mines would complete the objective. This didn't happen, so I investigated by opening the mission into the mission editor. It looked like due to limitations in the game, the BFB team could not set up the mission so that laying the mines completed the objective. So it is actually an altered patrol mission, with the added purpose of laying mines.

The mission radius and time are in the original mission orders you got.
The mission radius can be anywhere from 5 to 50 km, and mission time anywhere from 5 hours to a couple of days.

If you cannot remember what your mission parameters were, then err on the side of caution. Stay within 5km for a few days. You should eventually get mission complete, and a new objective.

The next time I took the sub out, I paid much closer attention to my mission orders :03:

The skin on the Shchuka is something I cooked up after seeing a profile of a later version in that colour. It may be a Northern Fleet variation as the profile had a 4XX series number.

Hi Serg,

It's a mixture of Real Enviroment, Enviromental 5 plus the scene file which Hitman uploaded for the RFB mod a few days back, plus the enviroment files from Lurker's OMEGU mod, so a real mix!:o

Best to use would be Enviromental 5 and drop in Lurkers enviroment files - they should give you a similar colour set.

German Campaign from official addon will be deleted and altered by new "unofficial" part, wich will include Soviet and Greit Britain submaine campaings. german submarines will remain only in museum and single missions.

Excuse me for my bad English.

Agreed, she looks little bit dirty and worn, but in game it's not so awful. I was very busy to create another skin for these renders, besides that many people love such kind of "skinart" :) And I know how this sub looks like, because we live in same city :cool:

For the remainder of this reply, I could not isolate the problems I wrote about below. Always the Baltic fleet years 1941 or 1942, various subs and either division group. I tried various combinations but still some Russian text or fonts was left over with messages, sightings and radio reports. I have not tried to see if I get translate them through an online translator.

I have also had a small problem with torpedoes not showing up at a career launch. It is random. I would then start the mission and save the game. Exit to the main menu. Torpedoes would be there. After my first patrol return, the torpedoes are shown for what is available in port.

Really nice submarines with "soviet" feel.
Would really like to use them versus japanese (1945) shipping in deepwater (Wladiwostok base?)

My little contribution to get that little extra atmosphere:
I took the band-sound already in the mod and converted it to OGG so as to be played in the main menu...

Change Note: The list above reflects what I'm using now after trying different mod combos. I found that PE4 adds all the great features and special effects I wanted. The list goes on and on, clouds, reflections, water physics, bow spray, foam, underwater rays and free camera to name a few. Adding PE4 makes BFB look and behave like any great super mod. Only PE stands for Pacific Environment and with BFB the orange skies and south pacific water colors don't make sense. So I layered Real Environment on top and got all the natural colors I would expect. In fact I think the combination of the two looks better then either one alone.

Notice I don't use the PE4 sound. I don't want it interfering with Russian sounds. Also I don't install RE #2 because PE4 does something similar with it's #3a. I may switch later though.

BFB is loaded with mine fields. So much so that I stop trying to map out the fields. Now I only map the safe channels. This is very difficult though. The watch crew will report ships, planes and shallow water and safely drop out of TC. There can be mines all about and nobody notices. No one on the boat is skilled in spotting mines except the good ol' captain. This means in uncharted waters you can not travel in TC at all.

This makes BFB a very difficult mod to play indeed.

Yeah - Im having this problem.
I used an online translation service to translate the Battle for the Baltic readme into English.
It reads a bit funny, but is understandable.
Gives good info on flotillas, subs, minefield locations etc.
Armed with this knowledge I'm going to go back and try and get to my patrol area.

If you want to add some new WW2-era Soviet subs to this mod think about:

- Leninets-class
- Pravda-class
- Katyusha-class

All of them served in the Baltic Fleet during the war.

PS. How wide was access to 53-39 and ET-80 torpedoes during the war? Weren't they only some kind of propaganda weapon while Soviet subs carried only torps of 53-38 type?

The 53-38U was an improved version:

I answer the Hydrolocator 129W it was applied from 44th year and not by all boats basically on the K-class and the S-class and on some L-class. Type-291 the radar stood on the British U-class.

And basic there were hydrolocators Mars-8 and Mars-12 and still some updatings but in an individual variant.

The chance to receive an active hydrolocator, at you will not be, as fashions is based on real events, and in the Navy of their USSR it was not simple. The radar to appear somewhere since 43.

U-class served on Northern fleet since March, 44th. I have given it it will not be simple to try in its Baltic.

Torpedoes 53-39 will be expensive as were used incidentally as well as torpedoes 53-38U with intensifying боезарядом. The basic torpedoes will be 45-36NU and 53-38.

Of course both sides are compatible each other after some minor modding effort! Look at archival screen-shots from top secret USS "Kraken" campaign on the Baltic. US Navy sent her on the Baltic in 1945 through Belomor Canal to show Soviets powerful American submarine technology: air and surface radars, TDC, active sonars, Mk-16 hydrogen powered torpedoes and other fancy stuff to warn them against starting the Cold War on sea. Yet Soviets did not listen... :haha:

Also, there are several new ships in here that would be useful additions to the Japanese!

NOM Moscow looks a lot like San Clemente Maru or or Dai-Iti Ogura Maru.

NPT_D3 looks like a japanese PT boat.

And coolest of all, NRoad_schooner looks a lot like a jap std type 2D or 2E.

It's just a bit detracting from the experience of what is otherwise, a fantastic mod

Also! Why is it that my sub magically gets damaged when i am sailing out over water, I understand the Baltic is shallow (slightly annoying, but i'll live) but the sub is just getting randomly damaged and more often than not sinking!

It's quite annoying!

Also! Why is it that my sub magically gets damaged when i am sailing out over water, I understand the Baltic is shallow (slightly annoying, but i'll live) but the sub is just getting randomly damaged and more often than not sinking!

It's quite annoying!

Probably, you're getting damaged by hitting a minefield, since some version of the mod these minefields had been marked on the ingame map, anyway in the beginning of this thread were a few pictures represents them. As for the first part of your question, I don't know whether there’s any translation of radio messages or not.

I played the first version at its release last year.
Now I have new (better) PC for myselfe and I got a big problem I can't explain.

I have activated the following mod-order with JSMG:

But when I try to start a mission I only get to the loading screen.
The mission loads for hours but nothing happens.
Other mods like Lurkers Operation Monsun work without any problems at all.

I tried different things up to deinstalling and reinstalling the whole game + addon an only loading the BfB mod-files from the list above. Same result. Mission doesn't load.

Any suggestions?

Hello!

Congratiulations SOM group for your fine work and a big thank you!

I have downloaded this mod and it is working fine, the only problem is that I have not yet been able to exit the Gulf of Finland because of the darn minefields. I go trough a first couple, but then i loose patience an speed up the timer just a bit to quickly and BAM!! game over

P.S. it would be very nice if you guys coud make the mods for Northern and Black sea fleet submrines.

wrong. "the great war" is WWI for the british, but it is also used as term for "Der große Vaterländische Krieg",meaning the War between Germany and the USSR. besides, the developers are Russians and quite particular...

mod is called The great war. not der grosse vaterlandische krieg. and "the great war" is adopted european as ww1. On the royal army school in Holland they learn you that the great war is ww1. also on the university they tell you that. i did military history, world history and normal history they all explain that the great war was ww1.

Also agree on your opinion. But i think for each country its different. I also have some books that called the wars with other names. but for me ww1 is the great war and ww2 just ww2. Holland didn't take part in ww2 so i could call ww2 the great war its more what you want i think.

Well for my work Ive bin in some subs some 20e times isn't really my thing. i deeply respect the guys who work on a sub 70 days in a row. nothing for me. i even saw a real typhoon just 1 meter in front of me believe me thats big :up:

Good news!
I noticed that in quick mission there is a cool sub with 6 fore and 2 aft torpedo tubes available, its name looks like (cyrillic):

Could u make it available in career mode also? The sub is way too cool only to use in quick mission...

(My final wish would be to have an Pacific base, say Wladiwostok, to undertake patrols against the japanese from 1945 (or say 1943 hypothetical early warstart with japan). Using RSRD campaign layers, my simple thought was that a base would be all you need...but I am no modder.)

But, with an english version I would already be happy!

The error at present fashions has been admitted is renamed in:"Baltic Sea War v_1.03.1"
Cards of minefields and some zones at the ships are at present corrected. I will soon lay out fashions in English but without radiogramms.

Only Hotmanandre can tell us what's going on in shallow Baltic waters. He's probably the one who tries to support this version of the mod (by casting spells, voodoo dancing etc. :) ) because a new mod is under way and whole team is working on it. I had the same problem So i just made one more install of the game and dropped all files and folders in the install. It's working so far.

Not something I'd recommend. You'll probably get conflicts as files get overwritten and something may not work correctly.

I tried it with Trigger Maru and it definitely didn't work. I suggest a brand new clean copy of SH4 in a different folder.

ha had no viruses or other problems, you can use it
for who's have win7/64 (like me :) ) : the program will auto install mod in
windir\program files\ubisoft\sh4\battle for the baltic\mods, you must copy and put it at his place, in program files(x86) etc., don't have option for choice installation path at setup
and is in russian :)

Battle of the Baltic is closed officially. Due to the release of the addon Soviet Waterway which includes the Baltic theater of hostilities.

P.S. We need people who can help verify the true test file to English. Since going through google translate Google:D

Any idea if they are planning to make German or Finnish sides playable?
I am creating a Finnish Campaign for SH3, if that interests you.
After starting my British Campaign, I decided it would be good to have a whole Atlantic and Baltic Campaign Mod (AABCM) series. So far, I have Britain and Finland under construction, Latvia and a few more, including the US.

In case some of you guys know Russian, you can join to the "open beta test" of the Soviet Waterway add-on (literal translation), BfB sequel. Here is the link: http://www.sukhoi.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=76423 Download installer and run it, choose your OS and game root folder (game folder should be detected automatically), press install, activate it via JSGME. We haven't tested the mod with other mods, so activate them on your own risk. In spite of the installer is in Russian, it should be pretty clear what you need to do.
Briefly about some features:
- new campaign,
- new highly detailed M class submarine (type M VI-bis series, learn more (http://uboat.net/allies/warships/class.html?ID=212&navy=USSR)),
- new locations, ships etc.

I'am afraid the posted link to the russian forum is dead now.
Some days ago it worked fine. Now i wanted to try out the "new" version of this mod, even it may be in russian language, but the link is dead.
Could someone of the russian modders fix the problem please?

You are most welcome. If you get annoyed by the mines (sometimes navigating around is incredibly perilous), let me know and I will tell you how to lower their density, or remove them completely. Anyone know if the Wilhelm Gustloff is in the Historic Missions addon?

Hi everyone,

Is anyone playing with the "Soviet Waterway" mod? I downloaded version 0.99 but haven't tried installing it yet. Are there any English/Russian language issues with the mod? Can it be installed with JSGME?

Also, does anyone have a link to "Baltic Sea War v_1.03.1.rar" which (I think) was the last released version of this mod? The download link provided earlier in the thread is dead.

Does anyone know if work on this mod is continuing?

Hi Everyone,

I managed to download the "Soviet Waterway" mod from:

This mod comes with its own installer which installs the mod into the MODS folder of your "Silent Hunter 4" directory. The mod can then be enabled/disabled with JSGME and shows up in JSGME as "Addon Soviet Waterway (v_099)". The installer is in Russian, but it is pretty easy to click your way through and install the mod.

Once I installed the mod I also installed some of the "Battle for the Baltic" mods on top of it so that I would have the Cyrillic fonts and English menus. A lot of the drop down menus (for selecting submarine type, for example) are still in Russian. The complete list of mods that I am currently using is:

Addon Soviet Waterway (v_099)
BFB Russian_Interface_wip15
BFB Soviet Captains Office
BFB Rough Crew Uniform
BFB English Campaign v2
BFB russian_voice_crew_for_sh4

It looks like missions are still restricted to the Baltic, but it is possible that some of the mods I installed on top of "Soviet Waterway" are overwriting files from the "Soviet Waterway" mod and 'damaging' it. I'd appreciate it if someone could comment on which mods are really required.

Once the mods were installed it all worked quite well and I was able to sail around in my "D" class submarine sinking friendlies with gun fire and torpedoes. :yep: I haven't tried a real mission yet and as the orders are in Russian I'm not sure what I should be doing in any case.

If anyone has any advice on how to translate the mission orders, etc. it would be most appreciated.

Hi S-13,

The font pack is included in one of the mods I listed above - I 'm sorry I don't recall which one.

The install will still look like gibberish (the mod installs into your JSGME MODS folder), but after you install the mods listed above you'll have the in game Russian fonts.

If you can't locate one of the mods listed, please let me know and I'll try and get it to you.

Battle for the Baltic if I know correctly is dead, but it's been replaced(combined) by the Soviet Waterway which covers more than just the Baltic now, you can find that link only 1-3 pages back.

You can find the Russian fonts in the "English Campaign BFTB v2" at http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1498.

Once you extract the mod they should be in your "BFB English Campaign v2\Data\Menu\Fonts" directory.

I haven't tried extracting just the fonts from the mod, so it would be great if you could report back and let everyone interested in this mod if extracting just the fonts worked for you.

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to fix this. Anytime I fire a torpedo it goes straight and never changes course to hit the target. It does this in both auto and manual firing modes. I would appreciate it if any of you know what I have to do to fix this cause it's driving me crazy!!!

Hi Zoso,

Soviet torpedoes were unable to alter course once they were fired. The SOMGroup have accurately modeled this by disabling the gyros in game, so the only way to hit something is to "lead your target".

The "Soviet Seaway" Mod does have tables giving range/angle/speed combinations included in the menu so you can view them in the periscope scheme, but they're in Cyrillic! The SOMGroup haven't released an English version of that Mod so they're difficult to use for a non-Russian speaker.

The only English translation available is for the Original Version 1.0 of the "Battle for the Baltic" Mod. This is NOT compatible with either the final 1.3 release or the "Soviet Seaway" SuperMod. If you do use it, a lot of things either do not work or won't appear, especially with the latter as the SOMGroup moved the Soviet subs into the German side of the game in order to get extra functionality.

This is the "Soviet Seaway" full mod. There is no non-Russian translation for this!

In addition there is the Final 1.3 version of the "Battle for the Baltic" mod HERE: http://www.sukhoi.ru/forum/showthread.php?t=60210

This is NOT compatible with the translations available on SUBSIM which are for the 1.0 version of the mod. You could use them but you'd lose a lot of things.

Yeah I downloaded this once and it very nearly ruined my SH4 game. The files from the mod had somehow stayed with the game even after disabling it with JGSME and uninstalling and reinstalling the game. As cool as the mod sounds it seems like it's buggy as hell and i'm not risking my only copy of the game again.

Good idea to have a separate. clean install of the game. Be it for comparing files that are modded, using for another set of mods-install, or if your main one goes to hell.

I tried that and it didn't work either. Still though this was the only mod that happened with and all the others work fine. After all if a mod does something like that everyone normally posts a warning or two.

Many programs give the option at time of install for a user or all users..... failing that you can just change it.

1. Start / right click programs / Open / Dbl click programs
2. Start / right click programs / Open All USers / Dbl click programs
3. Fine what ya want in windows (drill down as needed) ya opened under step 1 and copy / paste or more to window ya opened in step 2 ya opened under step 2

I played the mod a few months after Battle for the Baltic came out. The version before soviet waterways.

Has everyone first checked the SH4 download section first? I have Battle of Baltic archived on CD. Let me now by PM what is not in the SH4 download section and I'll reupload it to subsim.

I extracted the front but the front is in English is fine for me but if ppl want Russian front is not by this method :)
They do not turn after leaving the tubes. They just go straight ahead.
I know that the Russian subs of the period had only a rudimentary fire control system. It is probably to simulate that. They cannot transmit gyro angles to the torpedoes.
You have to aim by turning the boat, like a WW1 sub.
Easiest way to do this is use the TDC to set up a zero gyro angle shot.
Or use a lead angle calculator like this http://www.couscouscrabcakes.com/okane.html
I know the Russian 53-58 torpedo goes either 30.5 or 44.5 knots.
Or just estimate it and fire a spread along his track.
Sure makes things challenging!
And I was pulling my hair out until I figured the torps do not turn!

EDIT:L There is also an electric torpedo, the ET-80 available after 1943. This goes at 29 knots. I do not know if this one is capable of turning after leaving the tubes.
