Hi all. Been a reader of this forum for a couple years for help with SH3 and GWX but now I have a question that I cannot find the answer for - a technical / modding / compatibility question.

First, the key details.

AMD Athlon 64 4000+
2GB DDR RAM
nVidia 9600GT 512MB (8250 drivers [3/27/09])
:arrgh!:Windows XP Pro Enterprise SP2:arrgh!:
Steam version of SH3, 1.4b, with GWX 3.0.

Just purchased a new Samsung LCD with native 2048x1152 resolution. How should I go about preferably getting a true 16:9 SH3 @ native resolution, or, if that's not possible, 1536x1152 (4:3 but should still have native-like clarity with black bars on the side)?

Here's what I know:

There was a fix where you put d3d9.cfg and .dll files in and run MS ACT (Application Compatibility Toolkit). Unfortunately the version of ACT MS now provides (v5.5) no longer works under XP SP2, only XP SP3 and newer. Looked around for an older version and found one at majorgeeks (v5.0), but the installer asks for .NET framework 1.1 persistently, and will not install, even though I have .NET 3.0. Didn't pursue that route any further.

There is an available mod where you run a batch file instead of MS ACT. I DL'd it, but haven't run it yet, because I'm worried about possible incompatibilities with GWX 3.0. This option only gives me greater 4:3 capabilities.

I know there is a "widescreen mod" floating around for SH3, but last I heard it had issues with some objects still being stretched, missing sun halos, etc.

To summarize, my questions:

Can I just run the batch file fix with the d3d9 files over GWX 3.0 without issues?

If I do that, will it support the odd resolution 1536x1152?

Is there any way get a 16:9 2048x1152 without graphical defects?

Welcome to Subsim diamondthree. :arrgh!:

Your questions are a bit outside of my tech-knowhow. However, Rubini did a lot of work relating to the creation of a widescreen environment for SH3... (Which does not offer a selectable widescreen resolution option as you have found.) ...so just to get you started on the path tonight, you may research his posting history here to get closer to the answers you seek.

Otherwise, just let this thread cook for a day or so and someone with a bit more experience dealing with resolution issues will be along to help without a doubt.

Thanks Lehmann.

I did do some more searching around, and I found that the d3d9 files mod will only support up to 1280x1024 according to many posts. I find this odd considering it is a 5:4 ratio instead of 4:3 (like the stock 1024x768).

Welcome.

The Res Fix Mod (bat file) will support higher resolutions. I have successfully run GWX 3.0 @ 1920 x 1080. However, SH3 does not support widescreen resolutions correctly, so I suggest sucking it and seeing. ;) At least with the bat file you can uninstall the changes.

You can find the Mod under my name in the Downloads section.

FWIW, I recall from the widescreen and resfix threads that in fact it was not necessary to install the MS application compatibility kit. There was some contradiction in some of the threads. I have the resfix on and without the MSAC. Of course, there's a bit of stretching, but you learn to ignore it. Now, what I don['t know is how high you can go on the res and whether there's a limit. Mine runs on 1680x1050.

Here are some threads that I bookmarked quite a while back. Not necessarily on point, nor in any order, and possibly some are rather old or outdated, but may help you in searching for an answer.

I'm going to go ahead and try the batch res fix, and I'll let you know what transpires.

Thanks for the links.

EDIT: No luck. I tried it at 1536x1152, and it would not startup.

Hi guys :()1:

Just to say (again ..) that it works on windows 7 x64

Of course, don't install SH3 in "program files", and use the files provided by Danlisa ( SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b.zip). No need of Crosoft thing or whatever.

I use a Nvidia card with 195.62 and a Samsung 2232BW monitor which is 1680/1050 native res.
