just adding the ship into the game wont make them spawn randomly
to do that you must add them to the campaign files as well
if you try lurkers RSRDC mod it adds a bunch of realistic ships that WILL appear in the game and it also changes the campaign files to eliminate all the unrealistic traffic so you wont see as many ships as you are used to.
what it will do is allow you to go to time and place a historic battle happened and see a fairly good representation of it.
as i understand it he didnt do every battle but im pretty sure he has all the well known ones and the merchant ships can also be found in the time and place they used as shipping lanes during the war so no more convoys everywhere, you will have to go where the shipping lanes are.

Hi, this may also be useful. It helped me find the Yamato, when I too was having no luck with ever seeing it. Read the replies in the following thread that I created for one way to find Yamato.

If you've added the ship (or ships) to the roster correctly for whatever nation you want them in, then getting them to show up in game is a rather easy thing to do, though it can be tedious, depending entirely on the campaign files.
Assuming were talking about your standard traffic (troop, tanker, cargo), open whatever files are apporpriate for that unit type. (in the stock campaign files there are 3 different file types to look at, merchant, troop, and convoy).
In each of these files there are what is called random groups. Select one, right click, and define group contents. Now, if the campaign files your using are specifying SPECIFIC ships by name in these random groups, you've got alot of work ahead of you. You'll have to specifically add your new ships by name to each entry you want it to appear in.
If the campaign files are using generic entries, then it's basically going to spawn a random ship of whatever unit type there. (generic tanker, generic troop transport, generic cargo), in which case, you don't have to do anything, the game will randomly spawn it for you.

The mission editor will tell you what the warnings and errors are. You MUST correct the Errors, it should still save with a warning. If you are trying to save a regular mission like 43a_Jap_TroopConvoys.mis, you may have an Error saying no player unit.
If this is that is the error, go to Mission/Parameters and check the box that says "Ignore Player Submarines" and try saving it.
