Finally got GWX3.0 and SH3 commander installed, but I was wondering about the SH3_Mod_DirectX9Res10 mod that allows you to alter you ingame screen resolution. I'm assuming right now the game comes in 1024x768x32, but I want to increase it to 1920x1080x32. Will it work on my 22'' monitor?

I do and it I think why not give it a try. It works for me at 1440x900.

Dropped the two files into the SH3 folder, but can't alter the cfg file to read 1920x1024. The mod file cfg says 1280x1024 which seems fine I guess, but I would like to try something higher. Anyone have an idea how to change the resolution?

There should be a total of 4 files that you must copy to your Silenthunter3 main folder.

They are,SP2 Rez fix.bat
d3d9.cfg
d3d9.dll
SHIII.sdb
And an optional file called SP2 Rez fix uninstall.bat, so you can uninstall it so you choose.

after copying these to your main folder, double click on the SP 2 Rez fix.bat file to install it to the DOS directory.

Now to change your desired resolution, simply open the d3d9.cfg file and delete line resX=1280 and add your resolution. Then do the same for line resY=960.
Save changes and open your video card options screen and make sure to have the same resolution enabled. Also as a reccomendation, enable Antialasing and Anisotropic filtering.

That should give you the best available image you can get.

I hope this helps, good hunting.

Hmm, the mod I have (by Kegetys) only has two files to drop into the main SH3 folder, a d3d9.dll and d3d9.CFG file. The d3d9.CFG file is the one with a preset 1280x1024 resolution.

Would be anyone so kind to post a DL for this mod please. Today i ordered a new monitor. In a few days i need to tweak the resolution.
Thanks in forward.:yeah:

@Brasi: The mod you are talking about is not the mod One shot is talking about. I have "you" mod also and you (i) will not get higher resolutions as 1280X1024. So a link of the other mod will be interesting for both of us.

Thanks for showing them magic1111.

I was about to post the link, and you beat me to the punch.

@A6Intruder, Brasi. Just follow my step by step directions from my earlier post, and you should be all set. There is also a readme that I basically copied from.

Good hunting!

P.S. One more thing, the mod is labled for version 1.4, but Im not having any problems with running it with GWX3.0

I think your stuck with the mod Brasi has if you have Vista, and dx10,11.

@java's revenge. I'm running XP. I really don't know if there is a mod that is formatted like the one i'm running for Vista or not.

I hope there is though. It really makes SH3 look like a 2009 game!

Well I downloaded and installed the Mod for Vista and was able to edit the cfg file to 1920x1080x32 resolution. I was able to start the game and play a single mission without any glitches, and the clarity seemed way better then the stock 1024x768x32 version. It did take a bit longer for the mission to load. I checked out an underwater view of the sub and noticed slight vertical lines across the screen.

I'm wondering how someone can check for sure the game is running in the requested resolution.

I'm wondering how someone can check for sure the game is running in the requested resolution. In the game hit the "Prt Scr" key, exit game and view the snapshot, the properties will show the actual resolution.:yep:

When I hit the prt scr key the game froze up like a deer in headlights. I could still the background game sound playing but the screen froze.

EDIT: Same thing happened to me when I tried 1280x1024 resolution, and when I tried 1280x960 the game would exit out before I could get to the main screen.

Hmm, I have XP so it could be a compatibility issue, I downloaded and checked the files they are identicle to mine, the only thing different is the cfg file having the following line:
screenshotPath=C:\
Mine has:
screenshotPath=.
but that should only change the destination path for the snapshots from the default install folder to the C drive root.
Did you place all files in the SilentHunterIII main folder and run the SP2 Rez fix.bat file?
Otherwise don't use the Prt Scr key, use the Ctrl-F11 key combo and examine the snapshot in the SilentHunterIII main folder.:hmmm:

That doesn`t work for vista 64 bit directx 11.

I get loading crashes. Uninstalling was a problem till i found that
i had to remove the d3d9 files.

If your using the Vista version of the mod, and you have dx10 or 11, you cant run it with the d3d9 file installed. That file is for dx9 users.

Where the heck do you find out what directx version you have?

In Vista I don't know, check control panel if there is one! Can you goto Start\Run\dxdiag.exe:hmmm: But I think Vista is DX10 by default!:-?

Oneshot/Onekill
11-16-09, 11:43 PM
You would think the author would have included a dx10, or 11 file for Vista, and or Win7 user's. I don't believe Vista or Win7 user's will be able to adjust your desired resolution once you remove the d3d9.dll, or cfg. files. I hope i'm wrong, but I don't think I am. If the DL for Vista IS in fact for VISTA, then I don't understand why it dosen;t already have the appropriate files?

SOMEONE must have an idea.

Where the heck do you find out what directx version you have? You should still be able to click on the start tab at the bottom left on your task bar. Then click on the run option. Now type dxdiag, or dxdiag.exe, now you should get a window showing a diagnostic for your Directx, video display driver's, sound card driver's ect.

Look for a tab at the top of the diagnostic window that says Directx, or dx. Click on it and it should display what version of DirectX you are running.

Or if you are using Vista or Windows 7 then just Type dxdiag in your search bar in the start tab menu.
Windows 7 64bit version is directx 11
And the res fix works but because of the new file structure taking a screen shot may cause a CTD or your game will freeze. changing the file path causes a screen shot to be saved that looks like something out of this world. :hmmm:

This d3d9.dll is a so-called DirectX9 proxy, it intercept calls to DirectX9 and manipulate a call before the call is relayed to the orginal system dll.

The SH3 engine calls the d3d9.dll to set the resolution by the settings ingame for example to 1024x768. Normally, this call would go directly to the d3d9.dll in the Windows system folder, but now there is a dll with the same name in the directory of the running sh3.exe process, the call goes first to this proxy dll and this ignores the given parameters and takes it own settings from the cfg file. The proxy dll transmit this new settings to the original d3d9.dll in the system folder.

To make this proxy concept work, the proxy dll must be loaded by the SH3.exe with a delay. With Windows XP this delayed loading won't work until you use a sdb file (security database file) for your exe. Therefore XP user must use this sh3.sdb file, Vista/Win7 users don't need it, the delayed loading works with this OS.

In order to run this proxy mod with Vista/Win7 an installation of DirectX 9c is necessary because the original DX9 files must be in the Windows system folder. An installation of DirectX 9c besides DirectX 10/11 is also easily possible, nothing of DX10/11 will be overwritten or modified because DX10/11 has a different naming concept than DX9.

I've run such a parallel DX9 / DX10 installion here under Vista/Win7 for some time, because I develop software on this PC for both DX versions.

So how does one exactly roll back his directx10 to directx9 without completely screwing up his computer? I figure I would give it a try.

Sob! Bang!
After a couple of years away I am trying to get GWX installed and running on Win7 64bit.
After 4 hours of searching and fiddling I cant even get SHIII to work past the intros... the red bar completes and I get a windows error. I have tried running as administrator and in compatibility modes but it always crashes just after the red bar. I tried deleting the intro movies as well but no change.
It was running faultlessly on the same machine a couple of years ago... before I uninstalled it. :wah: AFAICT I am using the same CDs (no starforce version) and no CD patches as before. I feel sure its some kind of graphics/codec/codicil(?) bug but I just can't seem to crack it.
Any known solutions or is it just an inadvertent product of one of the Win7 updates or some other bug?

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum...
When I bought my copy of SHIII many years ago I also bought a second copy for my brother. I bought them both at the same time and externally the two CDs, documents, boxes and 2005 copyright stamps are identical. I have just discovered (by inadvertently putting the CD I was using into the other box, and reinstalling (yet again) from the "wrong" CD that they are not the same. The Versions I was using was 1.4b - this version kept crashing. The other version was 1.0.0.1 but without starforce. After patching to 1.4b EMEA and applying the no cd patch the game works.....
What on earth could be involved in the patch process that somehow makes the game work when the already fully patched game does not...
Anyway I'll make a few working copies for future stuff ups and get back to GWX! :subsim:
