View Full Version : Should I buy SH4?

Well, I've been playing Silent Hunter 3 for a while now and I've been wondering if I should buy SH4. It's only $10-15, so that seems like a good deal. But first, I've just got a few questions.

1. What's the difference between Silent Hunter 4 and the version with the U-boat mod? What does the 1.5 patch do that's included with UBM?

2. I've been reading some reviews about it, and they talked about problems with bugs and such. Since most of those reviews were in 2007, how has the situation changed over time? Is SH4 still bug-ridden?

During all this time I've focused on SH3 so I've payed less attention to Silent Hunter 4.

should buy SH4.

That depends if the Pacific theater interests you or not. If so, buy it, I highly doubt you'll see another PTO sub sim again. At the least, you wont see another one in 12 years maybe, which makes SH4 a must have. If the PTO doesn't interest you, skip it, and wait for SH5.

What's the difference between Silent Hunter 4 and the version with the U-boat mod?

Adds uboats (obviously), and many bug fixes and feature inhancements. UBI bundled patch 1.5 with it as a carrot incentive, so even if one isn't into uboats, there's just enough there to want to get it. By now it's cheap as dirt, so if you get SH4, may as well get the addon. Gold edition has both in one package. On top of that, all major mods have shifted to SH4 version 1.5 (uboat add on)

has the situation changed over time? Is SH4 still bug-ridden?

It's more playable now then ever before due to modding. My suggestion is to skip the stock game and load up the Game fixes only mod, RFB, FOTRS, or TMO for fleet boats. OM for uboats. Most of the more annoying bugs have been fixed, and the game enhanced signficantly. Every major mod has its own thing going on, so you'll have to pick the one that enhances the game in ways that you like.

Take it from someone who let SH4 collect dust for the last 2 years and went back to SH3 with GWX....with 1.5 it is very enjoyable. Yes there are still some bugs, but nothing show stopping.

Couple that with the mods (if Uboats are your thing...I hear Operation Monsoon is awesome) and you have a good package to tide you over until SH5.

Running SHIV with mods like TMO / RFB / RSRD make it shine. :sunny:

Definitely worth it for the bargain bin price. (Plus you're in the Pacific with all those Japanese fleet carriers and battleships, good stuff!)

The question is not "should I ?" but "Why haven't I?" :D

The PTO is a big theater with lots of stuff to sink  and allegedly we have a "ghost ship" too :shifty:

Thanks for all the replies, just keep 'em coming. I certainly have good faith in this game, and I can't really go wrong out of the bargain bin.

I bought SH3 and after playing it for a couple weeks i bought SH4 and have not regreted it yet! I have 3 SH4 Installs right now, 1 is stock, 1 has the OM Mod so i can have all the U-Boats and Missions and Campaigns and 1 is my custom install where i am basicly taking parts of other mods that i like and tweaking the game into my own version of SH4.

If you liked SH3, I think you'll love SH4. I have wanted a Pacific Sub Sim to replace SH1 for years. I didn't care for SH2 because of the way the missions were scripted and only a few months ago I decided to try SH3 and then SH4.

You really can't go wrong buying SH4, but make sure you get the U-Boat expansion pack, the mods available to version 1.5 make it well worth it.

If you played SH3 w/GWX and jump to SH4, give SH4 some time. Don't judge it after only one or two tries. It has a totally different feel. Like someone said above, you need to be a fan of Pacific fleet boats to really enjoy it. I've played it on and off since August '09 and am still getting a feel for what I like and dislike about it.

Skip stock and load up some of the super mods out there. I am currently running RFB 1.52/RSRD along with a couple of minor mods. I've tried TMO 1.7 with RSRD as well. Both RFB and TMO are excellent mods. I'm not sure which one I like best yet.

In the short time I've played SH4, it has never made me want to uninstall and shelve SH3 though. Both just feel different and there are pros and cons to both and both are excellent games. I will definitely keep playing both games as the mood suits.

It's an aweosme game with an amazing amount of cool mods. I personally love the pacific side of the submarine war and could not be happier.

I play TMO 1.7 with a bunch of cool graphics mods added...love this game!

Another reason to buy SHIV:
Instead of sinking just a couple of the fat ones... have you ever wanted to destroy the WHOLE convoy?

Would it be possible to make 2 separate installs, one for the U-boat mods like Operation Monsun, and another for the Pacific mods? That way there aren't really a lot of compatibility problems.

How you can easily make 10 seperate sh4 installs if you wanted to.

i posted a tutorial about it here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=158219

Nooooooooooo! Don't do it!!!!!!! Don't buy Silent Hunter!!!!!!!!!! It sucks the life from you and chucks all human beings who like you into the putrid discard pile. You'll starve your children, get fired from your job, start using the three minute rule to calculate your speed on the interstate..... Danger, Will Robinson! Extreme danger!

:timeout:So when you refer to leaving the computer after 3 weeks as a resupply stop or end of patrol that must be a bad thing,

Perhaps we should have a separate thread for SH4 widows.

I am cruising the posts because my damn computer crashed BIG TIME, and also SH4 will not recognize my activation code. You do not realize it yet, but Ducimus, Rockin Robbins, Sailor Steve, Webster (Webster for President!) and others here are the finest of the elite group of captains, and although Ducimus denies that TMO Beta destoyers are that difficult, they kick my ass regularly. Ducimus is the author of Trigger Maru and his current Beta is a true work of art. Robbins has a collection of tutorials that demonstrate the technical difficulty of many aspects of the game. Download the game. It is cheap. Get the UBoat add on. Using the various mods that suit you, and applying the techniques of various geniuses on the site, will, if nothing else, give you the opportunity to be witness to to a collection of works by geniuses who have an appreciation of history, computer animation, programming for historical realism, and a team with general brillance. You will not be disappointed, although it may take a while to avoid Ducimus' destroyers (we hates them.) If you see my emblem pasted on the Barbarinna when you are cruising the grass sea, send me some ice cream. The Barbarinna's ice cream maker was damaged on this mission. The crew fixed it, but our supply of ice cream melted.

hilarious post. I rank it up there with two others.

1. Lane's classic thread on how to redecorate your office.

2. A reply by Pacific Ace on September 18, 2009 re a new sonar technique "developed" by Rockin Robbins, quoted as follows "RR has developed a new radar based attack for those dark and stormy nights. I've heard its particularly effective against Essex class carriers. :haha:"

You stand in honored company.
