This implements emblems for OMEGU210 boat types: IIB, IIC, IID, VIIB, VIIC, VIIC/41, VIID, IX, IXB, IXC, IXC/40, IXD2, XXI.

Selecting an emblem

- predefined or your custom emblem can now we be selected from the equipment management menu, by default there is no emblem.

Making your own emblems

- they need to be DDS or TGA files, 256x256 pixels.
- transparency in your emblem image file will work.
- examples included with the mod, they were converted from SH3 (basically transparency added) they're not perfect but I'm sure your emblem will be!
- place your emblem in your game folder under Data\textures\TNormal\tex\emblem.tga or .dds and that's it.


Issues and problems

- the emblem model is a basic cube 1px deep, this can cause issues with conning towers that lack in flat areas such as type II subs. The emblem will not 'stick' well. As a result these boats get a smaller emblem and only the 'custom' one.
- if there is no emblem even if after you selected one from the menu, that means it hasn't been implemented for the boat, unless it's one of the boats mentioned at the top of this document, then it's probably a bug.
- type XXI emblem will disappear at certain angles, also looking for help with this one.

Tweaking placement

I have provided a placement kit for emblem positions in Support\OM U-Emblems\Placement Kit. Because S3D will not display external models associated this way, the kit will help with obtaining those coordinates. You can use those dat files to place emblems in whatever fashion and then copy the coordinates to the appropriate conning tower .dat file.

I did a quick test and found that this mod works well with OMv720. I would recommend this mod to all users of OM.

Only problem noted is that a version of this mod needs to be made that works with OMEGU.

I will look into it. I would need to see all the related files before I would integrate into OMEGU

OMEGU 210 doesn't include VIIC conning towers with it, maybe they're omitted by mistake? The mod, as it is in the original post, should work with OMEGU.

However if you plan to expand this project to other uboats then there would be a requirement for changes over the original .dat files

Here it is, with emblem selection enabled for OMEGU.

Boats with little square area on their conning towers are troublesome. I will deal with that by either using a part of the tower's mesh (laborious) or make emblems for those boats smaller.

Hey Othr,
With this latest version I can't get the custom emblem to show up on any of the boats. The flotilla emblems work fine. It's possible it could be just my install. Also there's this issue with some of the boats, looks like the placement just needs to be tweaked a little bit.

Was just doing a code review of your latest work. Your need to download OMEGU_v210_Hotfix3 and use the "Equipment.upc" in this mod. Your current "Equipment.upc" is stepping on a "high priority" fix.

Ah, ok I get what you're saying now, you can't "bend" the object on a round surface, it has to be flat. Roger that.

It would be possible to 'bend' it, but that would complicate things somewhat. Except using just one flat model for the emblem you would have to have multiple models that would match conning tower curvature for each tower. Unfortunately it is not possible with S3D to bend the model itself (or maybe?).

That means a fixed area where the model goes, the flat model is more flexible because you can move it around provided there is enough flat surface for it to stick well.

Also since you have been kind enough to let me roll your mod into the next version of OMEGU I've begun porting over "Evil Jester 76's Emblem-Mod" to run with the OM-Emblem mod. This one has 188 historical correct emblems and are all ready in the required format. The only problem I've seen is the "alpha channels" need some rework and I'm planning to fix it so they can all be selected from the "equipment page".

Sounds great! There is a mod out there as well called Conus' Historically Accurate U-boat Emblems 1.3 that I've been looking at. Quite a bit of good stuff there too.

If you use GIMP it's quite easy to convert those, they all use a certain colour to represent alpha channels for how it was done in SH3. Use the colour picker to select that colour and then Colours->Colour to alpha, done.

In the meantime while I was working on porting over boats from SH3 I improved the VIIC to include some bilge action and even diesel exhaust.

It still needs a bit of work but here is what it looks like so far

Can someone verify this has been added to an existing career and is working on a type VIIC... late 42'?

I had the same problem as Akula, after adding the extra section as described above it still wasn't showing up in the selection screen.

It turns out there a second section that needs to be added.

Find the last section with the header [UserPlayerUnit 1.UnitPartSlot 1.UnitPart.UpgradePackSlot xx] --->the number here may vary depending on type of boat and time period, look for the last one.

Immediately below that section copy this new section:

[UserPlayerUnit 1.UnitPartSlot 1.UnitPart.UpgradePackSlot xx+1]

Type=NULL

This should work, it was tested with IIB in Sep. 1939.

Found the problem with the emblem not showing up on the IID. There's a typo in UnitParts11IID.upc.

Change:

I played around with a few emblems and this method does not flip the image - so it works great for non-directional emblems like shields and such - directional emblems like the snorting bull, smiling sawfish, and leaping devil will be aiming forward on the port side... and to the rear on the starboard side. Risking a stupid question... is there a way to flip the image for opposing sides?

As etherberge pointed out this would be really easy to do, however, any emblems with text in them will get the 'mirrored' effect on one of the sides. That is a problem and there really is no easy way to approach this other than creating duplicates of already created emblems.

I guess there could be an addon on top of this addon to make what you want happen, pretty dirty and I don't like it but there really isn't much else we can do.

I suppose it would be possible to include two versions of the .dat files, one with the emblem facing backwards on one side but not mirrored and the other with both sides facing forwards but one side mirrored.

Leave it up to the users to choose which one they want by manually copying the files or through JSGME. This way everyone could have their cake and eat it too.:woot:

Another question about emblems in OM - in SH3/GWX I can choose favourite emblem from list and can see all available emblems. In OM there aren't any emblems to see, only "U-xxx emblem" info.
Is it normal or is it something wrong with my installation?
