View Full Version : [POLL] Monitor size (Specially NYGM users, but also anyone else)
Hi all,
I'm working in an update of my optics mod, and will release the NYGM as primary version, but also some more for other supermods. For the purpose of deciding the final size of the periscope view in the screen I'd like to know which monitor size you guys are using. Smaller monitors will require, to provide the desired effect, a larger viewport, while larger ones will be OK with a smaller one.
Thanks for taking two seconds to click on the poll option, no need to leave comments if you are short on time but I appreciate your help
Preview of the VERY EARLY BETA so you can understand what I mean by viewport size, and gauge it in your own screen:

Voted!
Think the usual resolution from these days onward will be 1680x1050

Thanks for still working on this great mod, Hitman.

22" 1920x1080 here, I don't think that will be typical though. Common wide screen tends to be 1680x1050.

l like very much the shadows in your dials Hitman!
i have a question, why is the matter of size screen? does the view is effected by the screen's size ?:06: i mean that-poor english-if you have a bigger screen don't all the objects getting analogical...larger?

He probably want to know what's the most used resolution so he can build up a gui to that especific resolution, since SH3 doesn't auto arrange stuff around when you change the resolution. He might even be considering a resolution selector built-in his supermod.

.... since SH3 doesn't auto arrange stuff around when you change the resolution......
i think that sh3 with res fix does arrange items (the issue you describe Phillip is happening only at sh4 but maybe i am wrong here, not sure about that)
anyway,Hitman... i am the last of Mohicans....i am using 1024x768 at a 20'' screen !!:DL

Many thanks for the input, guys

If you look at the screenshot you will see that the viewport for the periscope has a lot of empty black space around it. This is because the periscope has been intentionally made smaller than in other mods, where it sometimes covers the whole screen. The reason is that my GUI mod is built around a new concept, which implies tweaking the camera view angles in ALL views, not just scopes, etc, but also bridge, control room, etc. because currently there is no proportion between them: You get a comparatively much better sight of everything when using periscopes, etc, than when surfaced, and the zoom and detail of observed objects increases in the wrong proportion.
But reducing the size of the scope viewport will only produce a reasonable effect in monitors that are large enough to give enough detail, as f.e. a 15 inch monitor with such a small viewport will be probably too uncomfortable for the player. Thus, I want to know the average size of monitors to tweak the viewport accordingly, as ALL other camera angles in the game will depend from that.
What I want is that the player gets an overall better sense of proportions and distances in the game, i.e. that he starts being able -as was done in real life- to start estimating distances by naked eye, and that when looking through the optics, the correct proportions are kept instead of introducing an element of distortion because of their too high detail and zoom.
This will allow the use of quick range estimate tables like this one (Copied from a real life one!), which I'm trying to incorporate as slide-out:

and also an overall better depth perception, despite the 2D screen. This has a huge effect not just in targetting but also in maneuvering!
Thanks

I say also 'Great Work!', Hitman. I use your current manual targeting system all the time.
I voted 17-inch, which is what I have currently, but that is likely to change very soon with the release of Win-7. So I'm not sure how much my vote is relevant.
Stiebler.
19" inch before 17" inch.
Beautiful screen !!

i got your point Hitman about the size of peri view! very nice idea!
but let me ask you something ....to use the above technique showing in your pic doesn't need the current aob to be close to 90 in order to be able to see the whole length of target? i mean ...what if the current aob is very small? don't you will need the mast heights then?
sorry if i am 'missing' something .....

The traditional reticle will still be there. This other method is used for a very quick range estimate during the attack, and for the UZO (As in real life)-
If the target is not at a large AOB you must mentally represent yourself how it would be. If you can't do that, you can't anyway estimate the AOB , but don't worry this will not be a simple GUI mod ... it will come with a full training course in documents and missions, very close to what real commanders went through :sunny:

oh,ok Hitman i understand now! it is very interesting ....looking forward to 'see' it in action !
18" 1920x1080
(maintains aspect-ratio and scales to fullscreen)
But I had to vote for 17".

Love the periscope graphic. I am using it as my PC Background.
Play 20" 1600 x 1200 on a XP32 machine.
Tried with 26" 1920 x 1200 Vista64 but could not be bothered with all the issues.
