Don't trust your crew for visuals....he shaved a couple thousand yards off...in their favor.:haha: TC can get you killed early war.
Makes you appreciate surface radar when you get it.

...a very dangerous mod indeed! Especially the evil airplanes! TMO is higly infectious and requires extensive rehab to quit! Muahahahahaha!

:o...
I was tracking this convoy from 9000 yards. I did get a sound report of a fast dd closing, but no contact icons or visuals. Finally saw the dd about 8000 yards away...dusk at that...I saw it, not crew. First salvo hit. I decided to turn and run for it, but got hit again, so hit crash dive, got hit again going under.
You can see my last report at the top. My sub is almost sunk and being shot at and my crew still doesn't see anything.....
You have to really plan your attacks. It was early war and no surface radar, gets a little easier after that......but I now love it since I know how it reacts.
You can barely make out the smoke of the DD WAY off shooting me up. It measured 6500 yards.
If you play with cam and contacts off, it helps to cut them on for awhile until you learn how things respond.....

The main reason i toned down the watch crew visuals, is because they were spotting things well beyond the horizon line at times. Id see get "ship spotted", or look on the map, and the contact had already been identified, then go back to the bridge, squint through the binoculars, and narry a sign of a pixel to be seen of that contact.
Aside from distance, the things that will effect your watch crews visual acuity are:
1. Light conditions
2. Fog
3. Wave state
4. Aspect of target to your line of sight
5. Fatigue
As an aside, it was explained to me by another modder that how the world geometry in SH4 is a little screwed up. Visual sensors vary depending on the orientation of your view (North to south, vs east to west), making fine tuning visual sensors a frustrating task. Although this is 2nd hand info from a post i remember reading nearly a year ago.

I don't notice the crew visuals being that good. Even with 1.7 I can see ships thousands of yard through the binocs before they will respond, day or night. You can see smoke sometimes several thousand yards before your crew gives a visual contact. If anything, I thought the crew visuals were off the other way around.
I assume it's like them not giving sonar contacts on unknown targets that you can easily hear, that they will only give a contact message when they can determine if it's a warship or merchant, since they have no ability to report a unknown target by visuals or sonar.
The only time the crew seems to have better visuals than me is in fog. They will spot a ship I can't see through the fog.
When my PC slows down, I can track and get into position by finding ships with sonar and visuals with no help from the crew whatsoever.
Just tried TMO1.8 (no other mods enabled) a couple of minutes ago, a very short campaign
Asian fleet, S-18 boat, full realism
I found a task force close to Borneo, via "glitch" (go PD when PC slow down and check passive sonar for bearing), I spotted the ships well before my lookouts, it was nightime, and tried to approach surfaced,
After some time, I noticed I was found because I got a direct hit, and then another one, and another one and another one... by the time I got submerged, the sub had more holes than a swiss cheese.:wah:
Also, I noticed that S-18's deck gun is still manned by 2 people (instead of 6 or 7)
I will keep trying

Approaching on the surface is really tough, even in stock. I could do it with TMO1.7 making night surface attacks, but you want all factors in your favor. Still, closest I could get was 2500 yards, but that worked well.
I can't pull em off yet with 1.8....well, under right conditions I've made it to 3500 yards.
Problem is they face so many factors trying to find a proper balance due to code you just can't have everything, so it's just finding a balance that works.
Two gunners normal for the S boat.
i find the air to be alittle too thick for my tastes in 1.8. dunno how it was in 1.7.
wasn't that bad at the campaign start, but now its ridiculous by mid '42. I submerge due to all the aircraft spotted messages. run for a few hours. and at the exact moment i surface.. radar contact. crap, run underneath for another few hours.. exact moment i surface.. radar contact. after tiring of the messages, i ignore it and just run on the surface.. airplane spotted! Dive!
run for a few hours.. surface.. radar contact.
spent my whole last patrol sitting still under the water during the day so i wouldn't have to spend half my fuel on the trip recharging my batteries., and moving only by night. had no less than 20 air attacks on me, and despite making 5 or 6 of them flame.. not one got shot down :(
yes, planes should be a real threat for a sub.. but it's just annoying when it gets to that extreme.

I find the plane traffic in TMO 1.7 and 8 to be minor compared to stock. You'll run into more planes in realistic area's where airfields are.
It's also possible you hit an area where a carrier TF was coming through.
Also if you get spotted by planes, more planes will be vectored to find you, so don't be seen.
I get minor plane traffic with TMO, I actually get more when I add RSRD, but still no big deal. Stock, I wouldn't play it for the unrealistic plane traffic.
Not sure what's going on with your game

I agree, have mentioned it to ducimus the plane traffic is too heavy.Less than stock but still too much.I opened up the air layer with the ME, considering deleting some airbases, but then the problem is one area is not covered enough.
If there is a way to stop them from spawning so much, would be great.
I have the same thing happen often, where you dive, stay under for 2-3 hours come up then they are right back on the SD radar heading for you again, it makes you go WTF.You should be able to dive, come back up 10 mins later and in most cases not see the plane anymore that day.Really annoying diving all the time.I am currently in the Sea of Japan in early November 1943...way too many planes that always seem to know where i am, getting rather ridiculous.Running TMO 1.7.
Also, I hate the Zeros on ASW patrol from land, really unrealistic, only time Zeros were used for ASW was from the carriers, mainly the escort and light carriers. Not from land.Need more floatplanes on patrol from land bases.
I don't mind planes, in fact some of the convoys I added and reworked in TMO have several planes attached as escorts, they up the difficulty of attacking the mid and esp later way convoys.I have to dive so much, the annoying dive plane bug from stock kicks in, where dive planes dont extend when dive, sub responds like they are, but they dont go out.No one seems to have fixed it yet, incredibly annoying even though I play 100 realism without external cam, still annoying.

Maybe RSRD is giving me the less plane traffic. First I've heard people complaining of planes. I do get a lot of traffic if a campaign is near, but most of my travels I don't see many. Course I also seldom go near Japan.
Did notice late war in 44 plane traffic near Formosa is unrealistic. All day long usually 8 planes on you when you surface.
I do like plane traffic around convoys. Realistic and makes you think. Can't recall last time I saw a zero attacking me unless a carrier was near.
I've noticed in 1.7 and 1.8 both, both which I've played extensively, that a/c traffic really varies. Sometimes it is quite heavy and I begin to wonder if it's unrealistic, and then a few hours/miles later they may disappear. I usually play with RSRDC attached to whatever version of TMO I play, but bottom line, I think the a/c situation in these mods is about right. You never know what you'll run into--seems to depend on the year and the area you patrol, which is as should be.
banjo,
Agreed, over time it all evens out. You read some of the patrol reports and man those guys were yo-yo's. Although I tend to pull the plug the moment an aircraft sighting comes down from the watch, I have stayed on the surface and the aircraft have flown by without pestering the boat.

First, what are the beta changes? I have not seen any, except the ones that follow. Remember, I am the author of the post that says it doesn't appear that the download is 66 megabytes.
I just reloaded the beta. I am in port at Midway. After taking a shot at the lighthouse search light at the entry to the port for the hell of it, I noticed a sentry had walked off the pier he was patrolling and was begining to cross the harbor channel in mid air. His elevation was slightly higher than the periscope's. He stopped in the middle of the channel, turned and walked back to the pier. My crew went wild and wanted to see some more. In case he tried it again I had manned the anti aircraft gun so I could shoot him out of the sky and have him reassigned to the air force. The sentry heard my crew or saw some of them manning the anti aircraft weapon, so he returned to the pier, marched to the nearest building, stopped, saluated a few officers, and then did an about face and marched through the side of the building adjacent to his position, disappearing in the wall! He reappeared through the wall a few minutes later and did it again!
Beta appears to be the right word for the mod.

Ok, let me explain something to you. There is no "TMO Team". 90% of the work done in TMO has been done by me. I just downplay it, so i don't look like im not giving anyones contribuations their due credit. Vickers03, and Captain America have contributed some bits that i could not have done myself, but the fact remains, the majority of TMO has been developed, produced, and managed, by one ONE person. It is a HUGE undetaking, so I have to prioritize my time. I do NOT have the time to fiddle about with stupid minor asthetic BS like a node placement in a harbor dat file for some silly character animation your never going to see again the instant you leave port. Has no bearing or effect on your gameplay what so ever.
At the height of my work on this mod, i was , without exaggeration, starting my day at 7 or 8 AM. Work on TMO until noon. At noon id start getting ready for work. Work for me is from 1PM to 9:30 PM. I'd get home by 10PM, and By 10:30 PM, i was modding again and didnt turn in tell 2AM, sometimes 3AM. Often id be at this schedule for 3 or 4 weeks at a time. Take a few days rest, and then be at it again. Words alone cannot tell you how much effort i, as an individual, have put into this damn game.
So, you know what, you get the fruits of all this labor for FREE, costing you nothing more then the effort to D/L it. If you don't like it, You have two choices: You use another mod, or make your own mod that's more to your liking. In either event, if you want to sit there and belittle my effort, you can kindly kiss my ass. I simply have no time, nor patience for this sort of thing anymore.

@ im goin' down - this statement was induced by this thread but not specifically meant to be directed solely at you but to you and all the other members who post critcisms too.
honestly guys its easy to be a critic but how many members who make requests ever take the time to learn or understand how many long hours go into modding things that "look" simple?
so the guy walks off into thin air? yes thats a legitimate thing to point out but it could be done in a better way then the way it was worded.
most people wouldnt even understand that if you wanted to find and fix some minor little glitch like this guys walking habbits you could very likely spend dozens of hours doing it and if you are successfull nobody would ever notice or care and would instead complain about how much time its taking for you to release the next mod update.
im not saying dont be critical of peoples work or to point out errors because modders need to know these things and like to get feedback (good or bad) when they are found but when you do take the time to mention what you found please take into consideration the amount of effort and work that was put into a project as a whole and not be too quick to make off hand remarks that could be insulting to someone who has devoted endless hours of his time and family life to mod the game for us.

Decimus, to the extent that your comments may directed a me, I take exception. I play TMO1.7. I used to play RFB/RSRDC, then I switched to TMO/RSRDC. It was too hard. Then I went to FOTRS. Too many planes. Then I went to TMO1.7, which I can now handle with Webster's Fewer Planes mod. I am quite happy with the mod. I recently tried the Beta. I could not tell any difference, so I issued a post suggesting the RAR download was defective. That was yesterday or the day before. Next, my computer had a SH1.5 problem, so I reinstalled the game. I had saved TMO1.7, but I downloaded a new copy of the Beta and its four fixes. What I described in port in my post was what I first encountered. I am still in the midst of that mission. I still need to figure out what the changes are, so now I will read the change log you referred to in your post. I haven't seen anything clickable, so now I will look for them.
Also, I quote my recent post dated 09/20/2008 at 0600 hrs which is still on the board in the SH4 forum. Here it is:
"We owe the modders
As I was coming out of the kitchen, my three ferocious miniture poodle sentry's surrounded the fireplace, first growling and then barking. Soot started shooting out of the base of the chimney, and all of sudden, in full regalia
OUT STEPPED THE MAN HIMSELF -- SANTA CLAUS.
I looked in my backyard. It is September, a bright blue fall morning with no snow on the ground. Smack in the middle of my yard, in the center of a well manicured grass lawn, was a large sleigh. It was hitched up to a team of reindeer, one with a glowing, shiny red nose at the head of the team. Two of team were off the ground, held down only by the halters that were attached to the other reindeer by way of thick brown leather reins attached to decorated harnesses. Their forelegs were bent -- both were ready to take immediate flight. The remaining reindeer were pawing at the grass and snorting. Six elves had grabbed my son's basketball that he had left on the path, and they were playing a game of 3 on 3 on the adjacent concrete court where they had hung a new net on the basketball rim. They were shouting in high pitched voices and laughing.
In shock, I looked at Santa. Without a word handed me an envelope. I started to open it. I glanced up. He was gone! WTF. Where did he go? I went to the window. His sleigh was gone. He was gone. The reindeer were gone. So was his enterouge. All were gone without out a trace, except for the envelope in my hand. It all happened in thirty seconds!
I opened the envelope. It said, Go to subsim and incorporate different smoke for mercahants and warships into your career, Captain. Good luck and everyone's is counting on you.
I did not know that Christmas happened in September. But is does!
Thanks, Captain, for a great "Christmas" present.:salute: "
This is for the modders." [end of quote]
I am off to see if I can figure out the Beta changes.

Your gonna find several changes with 1.8. However, many are them are small tweaks, some are major changes. I love the clickable dials. Just for fun when I have contacts and cams off, I can now hit Del, get rid of all the buttons and drive the sub by the dials.
Think he made the 40 more powerful, I just haven't lived to get it yet. Enemy is much meaner....so beware the mod is for those wanting to die.
I think Ducimas took offense "Beta the right word for the mod". It's like using the truth that it's a beta to insult it being a beta.
Took me 5 tries to get a full DL, just servers, but geesh I hate that.

That line did get my hackles up. To put it in context, here's how i interpreted the post in whole:
"What's 1.8 do? I don't see squat except this dude walking on water. What a buggy POS."
At this point i don't know when ill wrap 1.8 up. I still have to finish the air spawn adjustments, test it, retest the 40MM on aircraft, and if CA wraps up his interior project, do all the dials, and such on it, and redo the interiors to accomidate the interior addition.
Im sorely tempted to abandon the project and never do anything more to it. My home PC desktop is festooned with files and shortcuts related to 1.8, and i havent touched them in the last 3 weeks. When i get home from work, i spend my time talking with my girlfriend, and if i still have time after that, i fire up Left4dead and blast some zombies to unwind before i go to bed.

Hey, try to remember that we respect your work. Let the water roll of your back, because you will be better for it when it unmistakeable that an attack is intended. I, however, was misunderstood, as I intended my post to be humorous as I figured things like that are common in a beta, speaking purely from lack of experience in modding.
You might try this. Leave the mod alone until you feel like looking at it. You might be surprised and find you feel like finishing (if you can ever be truly finished.)
Anyway, I returned to the mission and took a look around the sub. Here is what I did or did not notice.
Conning tower - three clickable buttons in the I never saw before. Maybe they have always been there in TMO. The are dive, crash dive and crew to battlestations. I did not see a depth meter that was clickable. I saw buttons to go to night periscope and fire torpedoes.
Other--I did not fid a captain's room or Yeoman's office (how do I get there?), my lights in the main cabin are on the let (port) side only, and my damage crew fills all the slots. I noticed nothing else clickable that was new.
I think maybe my beta 7 to 8 is not working well. I will reload the TMO and download the beta again. If something changes, I will post it.

As feedback goes, i am always looking for it, by way of lurking forums. I watch for what people complain about and how often they complain about it. I just rarely say anything. If a few people complain about the same thing, it gets my pragmatic interest and i'll investigate. If one person complains on two different forums about the same thing, i'll blow it off as a personal pet peeve, laugh about it and pay it no mind; if they press me with PM's or continually hounds on the same pet peeve accross several threads, they end up as something *I* complain about. :haha:

"Tinker or screw with my mod in any way, shape, or form, you are on your

That might be my issue. The UBI website has been down and now that it is up I still cannot access the download page. So I am confined to port.
By the way, you know that you have to wait in port 4 hours after each mission. I use time for vaious things such as shooting up the port. We need some skirts walking the pier. Plus, it is a great time to fraternize with the crew and knock out a couple of beers listening the Benny Goodman records.
Actually, and this is true, my father was in the 4th Marine division and saw action on Saipan. He was in a medical supply battalion, which was in combat in defense of the perimeter of a field hospital. He was awarded a medal. But that is besides the points. Back to the story. After the fighting, two members of his company went a little nuts, punched out some guys from a tank crew, and took it for a ride up and down the beach. They were court martialed. He represented them at the hearing. So, seeing soldiers walking on or above the water is no big deal.

TMO has plenty girls, just when you dock. However, one port has about 50 girls, not where the band plays, but one pier over.. If that's a bug, it's one we can live with.

Well, that was fine mess I got myself in.
I finally reinstalled everything. Previously, I thought I had a correct installation of the Beta. I had installed the mod in proper sequence, plus a few extra mods designed by Webster. When the game CTD the second time, I reinstalled everything from scratch except the four Beta patches. I added Nicolas' TGT fix mod. Guess what? I never had been playing TMO "Overhauled." I was playing 1.7. For some reason the Beta installation did not take on earlier installs. I think the download mirror was not giving me all of the softwre. My final download of the Beta consisted of the same files, but several of them contained many more megabytes. I knew as soon as I saw "Overhaled" on the opening screen that things were fouled up on the previous downlaods.
I saw panel lights on the right in the main room, I found the captain'ws quarters and Yeoman's office, the various clickable items, etc. I have not checked on the crew, but I am confident that it will be in order. Sorry for the fuss. I thought the mod was running, as I was unaware of the altered opening sequence. I could not see a difference in the game, because there was no difference, because unbeknownst to me, I was unable to acitvate the Beta.
The Beta looks good. I will try it for the next hour, and then call it a day:DL.

TMO 1.7 is TMO Overhauled. Simply if you have 1.7, you will see a TMO Overhauled at the loading screen. Not sure what version he considered TMO overhauled, but I've seen Overhauled for at least the last 2 updates. Sounds like you were never playing TMO to start with.
If you don't get a full download the file shoudn't unzip to a mod. When you try to unzip it, it should give an error.
