View Full Version : CTD with RFB :(

Hey guys,

I've been around Subsim a while but been very quiet of late, but getting very into SH4. I started playing stock, then RFB. I immediately liked the feel of RFB, but i started experiencing CTDs. These happened at various times, and seemed to be related to the periscope or TBT views during high-intensity action (i was being shelled by an approaching DD the first time, and looking thru the scope).

So i started testing. I selected the Battle of Midway mission, so that there would be plenty of enemy units close by, and surfaced in front of them, charging toward them at a flank bell. Of course they started shelling as soon as i was in range. At first, the first few shells would cause the CTD. I tend to leave my computer in standby a lot (but not with SH4 running!), so i rebooted and then used the JSGME to disable and then re-enable RFB. I also "turned down" the video performance to about medium. This had the effect of delaying the CTD until the moment that my boat was destroyed. I was on the bridge at the time.

I then disabled RFB and played the same mission, the same way. This time, when my boat was destroyed, i saw the external camera take over, and show my boat's last moments, then the mission results.

I repeated the mission several times, with RFB alternately enabled and disabled, with no other mods. My results were consistent - with RFB, i got the CTD at the moment of death. Without RFB - no CTD.

I hate to play without RFB... after reading the player's guide, i was very excited to use it. But i will have fun playing SH4 without it, if need be. I'd rather get this issue resolved and use RFB though.

I have yet to truly research whether my video drivers are up to date, but Windows "says" they are, after having checked with an online search. I'll do the check myself shortly. Also, and I apologize for this, but i have not had time to read thru the 120+ pages of this thread to see if there is a solution, but i did use the search feature and found no helpful results

Here are my system specs:

SH4 1.5 with RFB 1.52, no other mods
Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 2.40GHz
4GB RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium SP1
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Realtek High Definition Audio

If anyone can provide a solution or useful suggestions, i'd greatly appreciate it!

if you installed and uninstalled a few mods here and there then you may have some "mod soup" going on where leftover bits and pieces from mods were left behind somehow causing a corruption issue.

delete the jsgme mods folder and all your mods in it then run jsgme to create a new mods folder and replace all your mods with newly downloaded versions and that should clear up any issues.

also pay attention to the install order of large mods and their patches which if done wrong can cause issues

The man is the MAN! I am having a similar experience with TMO. When I try to run it, I get SH4 v. 1.5. I probably have corrupted mods as I have been running FOTRS for months.

sorry, i was in the middle of something and i didnt read through your entire post the first time and just skimmed over it but you sort of already diagnosed it yourself and determined it was somehow connected to a RFB related issue. RFB is pretty trouble free so i still think its a file corruption issue.

if cleaning up your files doesnt fix it then check the RFB thread for info and if you dont see anything about it then report it to luke, he is very good about catching anything thats not right and im sure he can help you there.

my guess is if its a RFB issue then he already knows about it and may have a fix for you

What version of RFB do you have. (And did redownloading RFB and useing that new one help?)

Make sure you have DX9 installed from the disc. You can run DX10, ect., but the game works with 9.

RFB 1.52 for SH4 v1.5 uploaded 10.25.08, with new patch 18 January 2009, plus hotfix

That's the patch and fix i was referring to. I only recently downloaded RFB, so I'm not sure if the patch and hotfix were a part of that download...

Thanks guys, gonna try the re-DL of RFB and the other suggestions tonight, but if there is a separate patch/hotfix out there, I'd love to be able to get my paws on it.

hmmm, it sounds more computer/video card related than anything.

hmm... It might be your computer... did you change your drivers... (RFB may be too much for your PC...)

I didn't change my drivers, but i am going to look into that this evening.

Turns out my system exceeds the minimum requirements for the game, exceeds for recommended RAM, meets for recommended video card memory, even though my card is not listed (GeForce 8600M GT).

Very disappointing, and it also says laptop versions of the "listed" video chipsets are not supported... and the machine on which I have SH4 installed is a laptop. OK... at 17 inches it's more like a desktop replacement, but still "portable". It would be nice if they'd have considered laptop driver support, because not all of us are able to play on a desktop unit...

the cpu and video specs are ok but forget about the recommended ram, you need at least 2gb or ram to avoid ctd issues

also large mods will increase the specs you need due to the added content so keep that in mind.

as Task Force said, RFB might be more than your computer can handle, try FOTRS, TMO, or GFO mods and see how they run

FOTRS is a good mod. Great eye candy!

Using FOTRS, the torpedoe angles are readily visibile on the Attack Map. Not so in RFB. In fact, using the Easy AoB mod in RFB is pretty much a waste of time because I cannot verify the torpedoe angle on the Attack Map. Any comments, sir? What were they thinking?

BTW it's a real PITA trying to install updated drivers for my nvidia card using their installer... keeps telling me i don't have the right HW for the downloaded driver. How many friggin' forums do i have to search to just get thru this one issue :damn:

ok... well. did you uninstall the old drivers... in vista you can just do it in the control panel... in the uninstall program section... just install the windows driver pack...

make sure your getting the right drivers...

the desktop drivers wont work with a laptop...

thanks for all the help... i've already done all this and nothing has resolved the issue. Next I might try to manually update my video driver.

I suppose I should count my blessings that stock SH4 works as well as it does, considering that my video card is not on the supported list... I might just have to go back to that.

By the way, who is this Luke that was mentioned earlier in the thread?

he is LukeFF and i guess you could say hes the spokesman for the RFB team of modders. hes the guy to talk to about all things involving RFB

i hope i'm not speaking too soon, but i updated my video driver and completely reinstalled the game and the mod, and the crash seems to have stopped happening...

One thing that does concern me is that I try to lock on a target in the scope or TBT and unless the target is very close, the lock won't stay locked! Does anyone know why this happens? I don't recall seeing this in the RFB manual. EDIT - never mind, i did find this in the manual... is it a bug in the game itself??

Thanks

its a bug in the most recent release of RFB I believe...:yep:
